This 1945 color cartoon “The ABC of Hand Tools” is presented by General Motors and produced by Walt Disney Productions in Technicolor. Hand tools are panned. Primitive Pete is a caveman who misuses each tool depicted (:50-2:13). Proper use of the ball and face sides of a ball-peen (ball-pein) hammer is explained (2:25-3:35). Hammers shown are brass or copper, raw-hide face, plastic tip, and claw (3:49). The claw hammer is used to hammer nails and the claw end to remove them. Shown are how to fix a loose head with a steel wedge and the proper way to hold a hammer (3:50-5:33). Primitive Pete ruins a screwdriver trying to pry a window open and hammering on it. A screwdriver has a handle, a long or short shank, and blade. The proper fit for a blade and screw slot are shown, as is how to grind a screwdriver into shape (5:34-8:17). A heavy-duty screwdriver has a large square shank for use with a wrench (8:18-8:47). Different types of pliers are shown: combination, diagonal cutting, long round-nose, and side-cutting (9:04). Insulated electrical wire is cut at the front of side-cutting pliers, flattened in the joint, and the insulation stripped at the front (9:05-9:36). Long round-nose pliers make a right-angle bend in wire and can make a loop (9:37-10:00). Diagonal pliers have angular cutting jaws; useful for cotter pins (10:01-10:13). Oil is placed on the joints (10:14-10:21). Combination pliers have a slip joint. A sheer between the teeth and joint is for cutting wire or nails. They should not be used on nuts (10:22-11:00). An open-end wrench is used to loosen and tighten nuts. The size measurement is the distance between the jaws. Primitive Pete hurts himself while trying to over-tighten the nut on a push lawnmower. The head is set at a 15-degree angle to the handle. In tight spaces, flip the head over for each turn (11:01-12:33). An open-end wrench with an adjustable jaw is for multiple nut sizes. The nut should fit snugly before closing the jaw to it. The pulling force should be applied to the stationary jaw side and also kept oiled (12:35-13:33). A medium-sized monkey wrench should fit around the nut. Exert pull opposite the opening. Pete incorrectly uses it before properly using a larger wrench (13:35-14:42). A pipe wrench is for round objects. The pipe should be at the center of the jaws. Teeth marks will be left unless the pipe is wrapped with a leather strap (14:44-15:23). A box wrench “knuckle saver” has 12 notches in its head to fit over nuts in any position. The head is offset from the handle at a 15-degree angle. A combination box and open-end “half-and-half” wrench provides versatility (15:25-16:21). A set of socket wrenches should have at least one handle. A hinged off-set handle is depicted at various angles. A t-handle with a universal joint is good for confined areas, as is a ratchet handle (16:23-17:39). Pete hammers using a rock attached to a handle (17:41-18:10).

My woodworking teacher used this as a learning tool for new kids. Honestly learned more from that man than anyone else. This cartoon seriously helped.

Brilliant! All kids (either gender) would benefit from watching this at a young age, to save ruining any tools they find in the home garage/workshop.

Do you plan to upload the 2nd part of this training film? The first part covers woodworking, but the second part covers metalworking.

You mean you're actually posting Disney content with your name on it? Did you buy the rights from them or what?

"We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! " Do away with the watermarks you put on. It ruins the content.

Here's the issue: tens of thousands of films like this one were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. So, in the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous RU-vid users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content. We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to deal with these kind of issues.

Do Disney's lawyers know you're putting your name all over their stuff? They don't even like people painting their cartoon characters up in nursery schools. You've got more guts than I have. Or maybe a bigger bank account.
