Field Strip & Review: M1 Garand, Walther K43, and Tokarev SVT40
• Field Strip & Review: ...
The above linked video is the prelude to this one.
The purpose of this video is a demonstration of the disassembly and reassembly of the late war type Walther K43 without the disassembly latch and with the locking wedge retainer. This rifle displays the pinnacle of how Walther was able to develop and improve the design as time progressed up until the capture of the factory in April of 1945 at which point production and further development ceased forever.
It’s important to note that this action only had a few years to develop, even if the preceding G41 is considered. Its entire service existence can practically be considered mass production prototype troop trials. The design was being revised as long as Walther was operational and able to work on it.
Contrary to popular myth, not everything was a desperate effort to get rifles out the door of ever-decreasing quality. The designers at Walther were dedicated to their craft and maintained a constant effort to provide a better rifle to their troops.

Interesting. The historical information is informative.

The later war disassembly simplification is definitely an improvement. I have an earlier G43 and the first few times disassembling I was worried about shooting parts across the room just like my G41W. My G43 also has the automatic dust cover instead of the manual one. Dust covers break on these rifles quite often they can be removed but unless you needed to there really isn't a reason to remove them. Great content 👍

I could be missing something, but I can’t think of anything preceding the K43 late type that uses an “AK-style” disassembly where the action cover just pivots up. The MKb42 has a fairly modern system that lived on in the CETME series and the AR15- but it is distinctly different from the K43 disassembly method. The Kalashnikov rifles generally get attribution to the M1 Rifle in the gas system and bolt mechanism, and the Remington Model 8 for the safety, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone credit Walther and the K43 as being the inspiration for how it is disassembled.

@@ColterBrog I know in Brazil they would copy the G43 in 30 06 designated as " Mq. S/Aut .30 M954 " but for some reason they didn't go with the later K43 disassembly and they used the earlier latch G43 style disassembly. Walther was ahead of the game with the disassembly simplification. No doubt the cover influenced Kalashnikov with the top cover.

@@ShaneT.0331 I need to look into the specifics of the M954 more, but I would assume whatever samples Imbel had of the K43 to base their design on must have been the more common earlier style with the latch. That, or they had samples of both but incorrectly attributed the later style disassembly to be a cost savings and production efficiency method implemented due to the war. This is probably less likely, as I think anyone (particularly a competent designer) would quickly realize the later style is a modernization.

@@ColterBrog The later style is allot better in my opinion too.
