Just a little more context to the Eagles Santa Incident. There was a massive snowstorm the night before and the stadium crew was only able to clear a little bit of the stadium, most of the seats were still covered in snow when fans arrived. Also, because of the snow storm, the original guy to play Santa couldn't make it to the stadium, so the Eagles entertainment team pulled some drunk scrawny twenty-something who was dressed as Santa out of the stands. As the halftime show started, the float then gets stuck in the mud causing a delay. So between the snow covered seats, the shitty season, freezing cold weather, and now a drunk skinny Santa running down the field, the fans began to throw snowballs. At which point, replacement Santa decided to start taunting the crowd, screaming they were now getting coal in their stockings, causing the incident to escalate. It should be noted though, the replacement Santa, the late Frank Olivo, has stated repeatedly that he had a blast during the whole incident and was quite proud of being the Santa to piss of the Philly fans.
@@Tr1sh4Lynn One of the most important facts about Philly sports fans is that the stadium where the Eagles played used to have an operating courtroom and jail, in order to more quickly expedite justice for things like disorderly conduct.
I am sorry for the tourist trap lies. Once upon a time, there were exactly two good cheesesteak places in the city, Pat's and Geno's. Then everyone who worked at either place who knew how to make a good cheesesteak scattered to start their own restaurant, leaving behind two empty holes with advertising budgets and nothing worth eating. It's been more than thirty years since either of the famous two made a meal that was better than, "fine".
@@JakeTheLateCreates roasted pork with broccoli rabe. My personal favorite is from Tony Luke’s, but you can’t really go wrong anywhere with Amoroso rolls.
@@JakeTheLateCreates yeah the roasted pork is very very good. You can still get a good cheeseteak tho it will always be a hole in a wall you've never heard of.
Philly kid, born and raised. Moved out to Illinois about two years ago, and I’m so fucking homesick. Thank you, Graham. Thank you so much. A little slice of home for the last four days was just what I needed. (Jim’s on South for your next cheesesteak, please.)
Came here to say the same damn thing. I legit had to rewind the video it was such a clean cut that I thought I had spaced out for a moment and missed something
See here's the thing about the philly cheesestakes you can't go to a place. The place has to appear to you. It has to either be a food truck or the greesyest spoon dinner. No decorations, barely a sign & if you slightly fear for your life, you know that is the place to eat a cheesestake. It will be the grossest most amazing thing you have ever eaten.
I don’t really comment all that much, but I just needed to say something. As a relatively recent convert to the Vlogs, I just cannot express the immense joy they have been brining to me, even in such a short span of time. The amount of time, effort, care, and consideration that go into the production, filming, and editing can only be a powerfully daunting, and thankless task. I can only hope that it is work that Graham truly wants to undertake, but even still the amount of pure artistry and fun within these videos are awe inspiring. Not to mention putting yourself, your life, and your incredible presence and wit through the churning crucible that is the internet is nothing short of inspirational and deeply humbling. Life is just a bit better knowing that, while painstakingly crafted, it also feels exceedingly genuine. Which speaks volumes as to the caliber of person is on the other end of the phone camera. Keep it up Graham, you are doing incredible work!
You guys going into a local gameshop has got to be the funniest thing ever. "Oh hey, we're the LRR MTG guys, you know, the ones that have been around forever. Doing all the cool magic stuff. Making comedy. Let's go to this random shop."
The next time you're in Philadelphia with unexpected time here are some cool things to do: - Magic Gardens (really cool mosaic museum) - Insectarium - Shofuso (traditional house brought over from Japan) - The Anarchist bookstore - Philly Goat Project
I live in Baltimore, not Philly, but I can pretty confidently state that there is no cheesesteak in the world that can possibly live up to the hype Philly puts on them. They're all pretty much just "fine".
The thing about "Santa deserved it" is that partly because of that incident Philadelphia has a reputation as having the worst sports fan in the US. And even though far worse things have occurred in other cities related to sports (e.g. literally people murdering each other in a parking lot over a sports rivalry), whenever anything bad occurs at a sports event in Philadelphia the Santa incident is brought up as evidence that it's "typical Philly fans". And I guess when a reputation is not allowed to die, the only thing you can do is lean into it. Hence "Santa deserved it".
This was quite an entrancing and hypnotizing gvlog. That music choice that closed out most of this episode had me dozing off, rewinding, and falling asleep all over again. Thanks for all that you do, G.
That transition at 16:13.. [chef's kiss] I've never had the itch to travel before, but with each new architectural beauty, I admit I started to feel an itch. 5:11 yo-yo
Thank you for these vlogs Graham. Allowing a bloke from Northumberland in England to "experience" Philidelphia. That last transition was really awesome too.
same. I was only in Philly for a couple years (technically lived in Camden but hopped over the bridge all the time) and this whole series has just been me reminiscing about how good philly was
Fun fact: Philadelphia's City Hall, the building you walk through near the end of the video, is the largest freestanding masonry structure in the world. At one point they considered demolishing to create a more centrally located city hall (because center city is actually pretty far south compared to the whole of philly) but it would have been far, far too expensive to demolish.
When I still went to conventions, I could tell how much I enjoyed them by the sense of sadness I felt as I left and came to terms with it being over. The last time I felt that was back in 2018...until right now. Somehow this vlog gave me that same sense of anticipation, discovery, amusement, moderate letdown and major redemption that tends to happen over a full weekend; and I feel that same sadness now that I've watched it all and realize this particular trip is over. Damn fine work, and thank you.
In my opinion, as a Pittsburgher (and thus somebody whose opinion on anything Philly is inherently suspect if not outright heretical)...Cheesesteaks aren't mind-blowing, you shouldn't expect them to be. They're just a good sandwich. They won't change you're life but it's meat and cheese and some veggies on bread. It's a solid sandwich. Honestly, the touristy cheesteak spaces impressed me less when I was there than the kind of place you saw at the Terminal market or local restaurants. The cheesesteak is like a chicken parm, it's not meant to be the star of a massive production it's just the kind of thing where you're like....yeah, I could go for a chicken parm. I could have a cheese steak.
Like, I had...one of Geno's or Pats when I was in Philly as a tourist once, it's a Tourist Rite of Passage thing in Philly, but the one I remember more was the pretty decent vegan cheesesteak my wife managed to get at a local sandwich place. Which, if you think about it, is a real marvel of modern technology.
I don't really know how to explain it but one of the biggest reasons I love your vlogs is because of how comforting they are. There's just something comfortable about watching them that I haven't felt with watching other vlogs if that makes any sense?
Hi Graham, Thanks for these recent videos! I've really missed your vlogs and appreciate the time and effort these represent. Hope you're having a wonderful day!
Glad you got to explore Philly. Our experience was quite different as on Friday while getting lunch at the market we were talking to some police officers who were also getting their lunch and they advised us to be careful as they just got back from an incident where a tourist was stabbed in the face… this was at 1:00 in the afternoon. We decided to stick to the event hall and our hotel for the rest of our stay as I’m allergic to face stabbings.
Wow, I had successfully forgotten the earworm that was the Barbera commercials and now its back. So thanks for that. Shame you missed the Mutter Museum. I'd add a recommendation for the Franklin Institute Science Museum if you have a chance someday. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!
The advantage of the newer forward-pour cement mixer is the driver can drive forward and see where’s he’s going while maneuvering into position to discharge his load, rather than having back into position and rely on spotters.
Your cheesesteak experience is sadly relatable for me. TBH, I have yet to have had an regional food which was mind-blowingly revelatory except for BBQ in Kansas City. It was so good, I moved there. Well, okay meeting someone (romantically) from KC and finding a good job there ALSO had something to do with the move. But still! Great BBQ!
Anyone who told you to go to Geno's was the true fool. Proximity-wise to the convention center, I'd have said your best bets were maybe Sonny's or heading down to one of the Ishkabibble's, off the top of my head. Dalessandro's often comes up as top tier but you're gonna need a ride of some sort, it's a bit of a haul. Glad y'all got out to see some cool stuff despite meaty disappointments, though.
No food can ever match the lofty expectations we form in our minds. And, on top of that, if a food is good then the recipe will spread. And equally good versions will show up elsewhere. So don't expect the signature food of whatever place you are going to will be mind-blowing when compared with the version you've had before. It's just going to be 'fine'.
Beautiful cinematography as always, Graham. Glad you enjoyed my city. We share a lot of the same views on it. The architecture and history is incredible; cheesesteaks and football are just alright.
Algorithmic punch! (I have heard tell, nay legend, of the fact that when the sorcerer's apprentice movie came out that started Nicolas Cage he had somehow wrangled the fact that part of the promotions were being done through Hasbro for toys to have an exclusive fireball magic card made with something that looks pretty close to him on it for that movie giving away at the release or something like that.)
Cheesesteak Sammich is a comfort food, not a knock-your-socks-off experience. I need a food that covers meat, veg, grain, and dairy in an easy to consume package... CHEESESTEAK!
