THIS is the kind of advice dreamers/beginners/wannabes/noobs need! I don’t have thousands of dollars to invest, nor do I know if there’s a market in my rural area to sustain a larger endeavor. So glad you popped up in my feed. I’ll be perusing your older videos! I’m interested in more info on spacing (from what I’ve gathered flower farmers often plant closer together to encourage longer stems...), pinching, and staking/supporting.

I’m actually going to do a whole series on selling flowers from my backyard this summer, with numbers on what I spend and what I make. And I’ll have some info on spacing when I start planting stuff out in April & May.

I'm glad I found your site. I want to sell flowers on a small scale as in my backyard garden. Not trying to get rich or anything but since I like to grow flowers I may as well sell some of it. And, I'm planning eventually on not having grass - I don't like to mow and they're just boring.

Make sure you check with your Dept. of Agriculture. Usually you'll need a certificate from them. Where I live, it takes about a week to get an appointment for them to come inspect. They won't come until the plants are growing. You might also need a florist license.

You can get them from Gardenrsworshop.com (along with a whole lot of flower growing info), Johnny’s seeds and to my surprise I just picked some up at Menards yesterday, they are by Burpee, Bells of Ireland, moluccella laevis, just thought I would give them a try :) I’m sure many other seeds suppliers but these are where I’ve purchased them before. Best of luck to you !!

I want to start something similar but I don’t want to get in trouble with the law. :-) would love if you make a video on that. Thanks

What's earnings your garden.
@ShiftingRoots
@ShiftingRoots 3 года назад
I think it would be reasonable to expect a minimum of 3 bouquets a week at $25 each for 8 weeks would be $600. I think you could make around $1000 if you could sell more bouquets, but there are so many variables, that I'd rather estimate on the low earnings side. Not crazy money, but a nice amount if you're saving up for something.
@lunkerpond9765

You're pretty far off on this video with several of your points as well as being incorrect in claiming that your model is the "best". 1.) No one has to spend $5,000 on seed, bulbs and plugs. You can choose to sell snap dragons in May instead of tulips. You can have a large garden for Well under $500 in seed if you look around. 2.) Irrigation - If saving rain water is something you want to do, you can irrigate a 1/4 acre garden with rain water assuming you get enough rain. 3.) Florists - There is zero pressure or stress in selling to florists because there is no contract involved. They call and ask if you have something that you need, if you have it, you sell it. If you don't have it, you make a note to consider growing it. You learn incredibly valuable information about what flower varieties and colors do well in your local community when working with a florist. 4.) You talk about making mistakes and how these mistakes are less important when you have a 12x16 foot garden. There's enough good information on RU-vid alone to prevent a gardener from making mistakes. Larger scale flower farmers don't make very many mistakes and always have backups growing for the mistakes that we can't foresee or have any control over, IE: the "oh crap" section of the garden where backups are grown. 5.) Websites are no longer needed, at all... Anyone can create a free Facebook page and sell their flowers or starts purely through that at zero cost. The larger your garden, the more knowledgeable that you've made yourself, the more business you will do. The keys to success in making money as a flower farmer have nothing what so ever to do with starting out on a small scale. The key to success is know exactly what you're doing before you get started. 1.) Be aware that the flower season is divided into 3 sections; Spring, Summer and Fall. K ow which flowers people want in each season and which colors to grow. People don't want burhandy, brown or bright red in the spring. They also don't want tulips in August. Customers like the progression of colors, pastels in spring, bright vibrant colors in summer and earth tones in fall. They also like how each month brings them their favorite flowers, nit the same snap dragons over and over again, they can't wait for thir procut sunflowers and the time of year that sunflowers represent. Knowing this information helps you design your calendar. Helps you plan what seeds to buy, in what colors, when to start seeds, when to succession plant, its the baseline information for your entire business model, regardless of how big or how small your garden is. And tgis is just the very top of the iceburg. There's a ton more for a new gardener to,learn before even considering buying seeds. Spend countless hours on RU-vid. Be very picky on which youtubers you trust. Find at least three people on RU-vid that have established, successful businesses in YOUR growing zone. Avoid learning from anyone that gardens as a "side hustle" if they knewwhat they were doing, they would be doing it full time and making very good money at it.

So have you sold your bouquets at a market or even at a stand outside of your home? How does the Facebook sales go? I live in a small community and I'm not sure exactly how to do that in my town so I have committed to a market a couple Towns over but I would like to get sales in the town where I live as well
@ShiftingRoots
@ShiftingRoots 3 года назад
When we eventually move, we hope to build a stand outside our home. I'll be selling some this year and my intent is to only sell what I have available that week through Facebook and Instagram. If you know you have enough flowers to support a subscription for a couple of weeks, you could also go that route. A subscription doesn't have to be all summer. It could be half the season, once a month, whatever you think will work best for the amount of flowers you'll have
@ShiftingRoots

I forgot to add, any sales I've had so far have just been through word of mouth. But it's different for me because I have an established blog about flowers!
