*Gets out notebook to learn how to play 200 guardsman faster than my knight opponent.*

These are great tips. +1 on movement trays and chess clocks. I don't use a physical chess clock in my games, but when me and my friend play, we play fast and with the intention of playing more than once per session. We might not always make the best, most thought-out tactical decisions, but we definitely get to see a variety of scenarios (good and bad) and how they play out. You learn a lot.

Best thing I ever did for both learning my army's rule and playing quickly was typing my data cards and stratagems out. I have a template for each unit card that I fill in every time I create an army roster, so all of my info is in my hands on a few sides of A4, and typing the same info in each time helps me learn what each model can do, all of their abilities, when you can use a particular ability, how leaders affect their bodyguards when you combine them onto one card, what enhancements do to characters etc, and having it all on a few sheets of paper lets me reference it almost immediately in game, without scrolling an app or flicking a book.

Great advice thank you! Having very recently picked up 40k and space marines in particular I find all the new Primaris tanks have so many guns it's a pain to keep track of. I'm now tempted by a repulsor cup with 12 Grey dice for the Gatling cannon, 18 blue dice for the defensive array, 1 red dice for the Lascannon, and a white dice for the hunter-killer! The Gladiator Reaper needs anything from 20 to 29 depending on rapid fires and the d3 on the rocket pod too. If nothing else the video has helped me identify one place to try and save time!

No problem i am pleased it was useful! Wow that is a lot of variation in the shots for one unit!

I played a different wargame (warmahordes) and I will say playing on "deathclock" for years which while scary at first, really helped ensure we got a lot of gaming time in. Playing on clock makes you think even during opponents turn and get into the habit of being decisive instead of just mulling things which makes games move and less likely to get bogged down and bore you or opponent. So even though I play a tricky/horde faction of GSC now, I can usually wrap a turn up much faster than SM or even Custodes players on avg. It just keeps them games moving and I recommend trying it when learning or improving as it frees up game time for actually playing the game despite the fear of clock causing too much anxiety

Playing on a clock makes sense to me. A platoon commander doesn't have infinite decision making time in the middle of a battle, it seems right that you have to make choices under some pressure. So long as it's not so strict that a horde army struggles to physically move models and roll dice in time

Another great video. I have never played with a chess clock and even when I’ve been to super-majors, I’ve rarely seen them being used despite supposedly being mandatory. My concern has always been that it’s another piece of rules and etiquette that I don’t understand and can seem a bit intimidating. That said, I would be very happy to use one to try - would be good if tournament packs set out a very clear set of guidelines for the etiquette for when time gets swapped between players so that everyone has the same expectations.

Where do you get the movement trays from? Do you find that you can still get the most out of your movement and create screening etc using them?
@incursiontactics
@incursiontactics Месяц назад
Element games is where i have got mine from. Yes they are a bit limiting for that but i still find it useful to move them in and out of the box on trays. When u need to set them up u can plonk them down near where u are setting up nice and quick, then position them up one by one off the tray a bit quicker. Then u have the trays ready to put them back on as u lose casualties to one side. Then can neatly pop back in the box as u go. Helps keep things organised in their units a lot quicker i find.

Here´s something that´ll probably make you feel better. My first game of 40k in 9th, vs my friend who was even more clueless but agumentative like crazy, was a 1700 ish game. And it took us 3 days to finish it. I m guessing between 15-18 hours. I doubt anyone can beat that. I m still not the fastest with, depending on the board and army, my avarage time per turn is 45mins. So anything that is speeding up my thinking is greatly appriciated!

Wow three days that's impressive! It is hard to play fast when you're still learning the game for sure. I'm glad you appreciated the video, thanks. As you play more hopefully snowballs for you a bit more now as you have more opportunity to play more games!

The sheet seems really good, I am so unsure about when and how to add scores. Doesn't seem covered much. I've downloaded the sheet which I'll be using. Sent a little tip to say thank you for that.
@incursiontactics
@incursiontactics 23 дня назад
Thank you! With scoring I tend to add the scores as I go. So in the command phase when the primary mission is scored I will add that on to the sheet and then at the end of the turn I will tally up any secondary scoring. Hope that helps :)

@@incursiontactics definitely thank you. Only found your page today. Very new, but I am really enjoying and finding your videos very useful, it's making many rules easier to understand and how to apply them. Thanks and please keep it up. Where in the South of England do you hold Tournaments, I am based in Kent. I'd like to come and see one in action.

I missed this reply, sorry. I see you in the discord tho helloooo! The events i run are in Lancing (just before Worthing). There are also gaming groups out of Dice Saloon in Brighton and the King & Queen pub in Brighton. There is also a Kent based group called Gothic Games Canterbury as well. All the above can be found on fb - shout in discord if need any links :)

How do you set up the chess clock for a game of 40k? Do you use delay? How much time does each player get? Do you adjust between rounds (first turns are longer)?
@incursiontactics
@incursiontactics 2 месяца назад
A good benchmark for a game is 2.45hours - 3hours, not including pre game chat and running through armies, etc. I normally end up putting 1 hour and 25 minutes each player when I practice. This means you are somewhere in the middle of that time frame. (Added benefit of practicing like this means you mirror being at a tournament with 3 hour rounds and 10 minutes used to set up the board and have a run through of opponents armies. So if you intend to go to tournaments it is good practice). Once that is set then you have that 1.25 hours to get through deployment and all your turns. How you use it is up to you but naturally you should use less and less each turn as the game goes on.

In the core rules only infantry and beasts can move through ruins as if they are not there. Nurglings being swarms can't. It's wild.
