The War of 1812 is misunderstood by Americans, forgotten by the English, and revered by Canadians. So what prompted the United States to officially declare war for the first time in its history?

While I've tried to "take the piss" as the British would say with everyone involved, I've tried to have Tecumseh and crew come out the most unscathed. Considering that the War of 1812 was most destructive to the indigenous people more than anyone else, I tried to make the humor presentation at the expense of the oppressors, not the oppressed. Punch up, not down. When the self- promoting Harrison calls them savages, the audience is meant to see this as damning of Harrison's character and not of the people he's talking about. At least, that's my intention.

Please no, kids are misinformed enough as is. The intro regarding the revolution glosses over very key and important points. Taxes, the colonials were ok with paying taxes provided they had representation in parliament. For Pete's sake the motto wasn't no taxation it was no taxation without representation. The arms of the militia was not primarily meant for shooting at fellow Brits, they were for defending themselves because the British regulars were not always available. The issue with tea, the colonials wanted to be able to trade with more then just other Brits. This maybe humorous, but do not rely on this if you want the real story.

Amusing takes, for sure. And some history. Interspersing modern ideas for comedic effect is great, but interspersing them for seemingly political reasons is not so great. History is rough stuff. Always has been. America was born by blood and trial, just like other nations. We must remember it and keep reviewing it, and learn from it, but we are no worse or better than anyone. We stand on the shoulders of these people, having gained whatever enlightenment we think we have gained as a result of their moves. We should make an effort to understand that they lived in different times. And thank our lucky stars that every player in our history brought us into our relatively cushy modern lives.

This video overlooks one of the major causes of the war: Slavery. Canada was a beacon of freedom, enticing slaves to escape to a place where they would be free forever. The Fugitive Slave clauses of the US constitution obviously did not apply to Canada . And the slave catchers and slave bounty hunters were forbidden from Canadian soil... unless the USA were to conquer Canada. Of course, it was politically incorrect to say "We are fighting a war for slavery!" But people's deeds speak far louder than their words. Suppose the war had really been about such things as maritime trade issues and impressment of sailors. These were issues of importance to the maritime New England states , but not for landlocked slave states such as Kentucky and Tennessee. But the reality is that these landlocked slave states were pro-war, and the New England states were anti-war. So yes, it was about slavery.

There was a prominent faction that saw the Napoleonic wars as the perfect opportunity to annex Canada. They underestimated Britain's ability to fight on both fronts. They also had a fundamental misconception that Canadians would welcome the opportunity to be free of Britain. Huge miscalculations on their part. I would also make the point that Britain was not merely impressing men from American ships, but also vast quantities of her own people off the street. "Press gangs" were literally kidnapping Englishmen, including married men with families to feed.
@dominicbuckley8309
@dominicbuckley8309 9 месяцев назад
There is little basis to the widespread myth that civilians without any seafaring background were randomly seized from home, country lane or workplace by press gangs or that the latter were employed inland away from coastal ports. The power of the Impressment Service to conscript was limited by law to seafarers, including merchant seamen, longshoremen, collier crews and fishermen. From 1740, landsmen were legally exempt from impressment, and if a pressed landsman was able to prove his status to the Admiralty he was usually released. The US Navy also used impressment at that time. USS Wasp, Hornet and Constitution are all known to have taken British and Irish seamen, either from stopping ships at sea or 'shanghaing' drunk sailors in port, while USS Virginia impressed 30 citizens of Baltimore, an act expressly forbidden by Maryland law. Matters came to a head with the 'Little Belt' affair in 1811, when USS President badly damaged the sloop HMS Little Belt, killing 11 of her crew. Intense diplomatic efforts prevented turning the incident into war, and both navies issued orders stopping impressment from any foreign vessel. So the issue had actually been resolved well before the 1812 war started, though the resentment obviously remained.

Great video. The part about the american revolution isn't really accurate. The colonies wouldn't have won the war without the help of the french, but it would have been even more impossible for France to free the colonies from Britain on their own. The americans did the bulk of the land fighting and the french took care of the naval battles. It ended up being the perfect combination against the British.
@archivesoffantasy5560

I think if America was to win without France it would be by doing guerrilla warfare until the British gave up and pulled out. There would be no big surrender like at Yorktown without the European allies. But without Frances money contribution either I don’t think it would be possible
