War of the Worlds, George Pal, intro by Sir Cedrick Hardwicke with animated contemporary NASA photographic images and practical models, with full, utter reverense to Chesley Bonestell and the original... Soundtrack, Copyright Paramount Pictures 1953..
For those that are interested in the lack of VENUS as it keeps getting mentioned..
From the original shooting script supplied by Joseph Stachler....
""Where there are titanic cliffs of lava
and ice, with hydrogen flaming at the tops.
Where the atmospheric pressure is terrible -
thousands of pounds to the square inch.
On Mars it is only four pounds. They
couldn't go there. Nor to Venus, which
has no oxygen and no water. Nor could they
go to Mercury nearest planet to the sun."
So, Venus was dropped for some reason...

For those wondering, Venus is omitted from the opening narrative because in the book, after the Martian invasion of Earth fails, the Martians make an apparent attempt to try to migrate to Venus. The end of the book describes astronomers seeing a string of "meteors" striking Venus in a manner similar to how the Martians attacked Earth.

I was thinking about a Martian city. I like how you did it. The original movie in 1953 used the spotty science of Mars at the time about Mars and had the painting with Percival Lowell's canals terminating in what must be the capital. Your city is very good, but if you ever feel the urge to do it over i have an idea: A city inspired a bit by Los Angles from blade runner, London from 1984, and the cities from "the phantom menace". Panning From left to right you present a city one the shore of a dried up ocean. Dark short building along the former coastline with much larger structures jutting up out of them. The shorter buildings are dark gray and you can just barely see them a few lights amongst them. The larger ones are shiney metallic with lights on them, however some of the large buildings (some in the foreground and some in back are the same shape as some of the others but the metallic surface is covered in patina, and/or oxidation and look like the burned a long time ago. The structures have fewer lights and seem to have unintelligible writing on them. The panning stops when the building thats depicted in the original and your versions is centered. Then it fades out. The perspective should be like you are 40 miles away, and 1000 feet in the air. Colors should be shifted toward the blue end of the visible spectrum. The martian surface should be a dull red, and the sky a dull reddish gloom.

They didn't forget Venus--at the time this movie was made, Venus would have been considered a huge plot hole because it was thought to be very Earth-like! A British astronomer named Patrick Moore even said that Venus might be more promising to colonize than Mars because its 100% cloud cover meant we couldn't see its surface, but they meant there was a thick atmosphere like Earth's, so people imagined it was probably a tropical world that was only slightly hotter than Earth. Then we sent probes there in 1962 and found out the surface is 500°C. Whoopsie.

Regarding the lack of Venus... Venus was included in the original script but never filmed. Here's the cut narration... Where there are titanic cliffs of lava and ice, with hydrogen flaming at the tops. Where the atmospheric pressure is terrible - thousands of pounds to the square inch. On Mars it is only four pounds. They couldn't go there. Nor to Venus, which has no oxygen and no water. Nor could they go to Mercury nearest planet to the sun.

In between the two movies of the War of the Worlds, there was Jeff Wayne's 1978 musical version. I still have this record in my record collection. This musical treat is closer to the Jules Verne book. And, best of all, Richard Burton does the narration. A stage production of this musical version was also produced.

There's actually a good reason for that, and at the time, it would have counted as a huge plothole: in 1953, Venus was thought to be extremely Earth-like! Its 100% cloud cover prevented people from seeing its surface, but the atmosphere was obviously as thick or thicker than Earth's, so people thought it might be a slightly hotter, tropical world. Patrick Moore, a famous British astronomer, even said that Venus might be more promising to colonize than Mars. Then we sent our first probe there in 1962 and it turns out the surface is 500°C. I was always amused at the way Venus was omitted in the list of worlds viewed as potential Martian colonies. During the era of pulp science fiction and 1950s movie science fiction, Venus was often considered to be possibly habitable. Even though it is virulently hostile with its heavy and extremely hot and dense gaseous atmosphere, there are still scientific theories suggesting it could be terraformed...or Ares-formed.

An interesting thing about that opening narration, it omits Venus. At the time of that movie, Venus was thought to have a temperate climate similar to Earth's, but to harbor more primitive lifeforms. It could also have been a destination for the Martians and including it would have made the invasion of Earth appear less imperative. I mean, why go to the trouble of exterminating humanity if there's another, uninhabited world available for colonization?
