War Thunder - Curtiss P-36 Hawk

With the rapid pace of aircraft development in the 1930s, pre-war fighter designs like the P-36 didn't stay cutting edge for long and were often obsolete within a few years of entering service. Still flies well in War Thunder, though.

The Hawks that the Finns bought from the Germans were not used in the Winter war since it had already ended. The planes were bought during the interim peace and the Soviet Union were told that the planes were sent by other nations through Germany during the Winter war and the shipment was stopped by the Germans who now after the war allowed the planes to arrive. Ofcourse this was not true but Germany wanted to keep good relations with the Soviets and so selling weapons to the Finns was not something they wanted to admit to. The French/Norwegian/German Hawks flew in Continual war. The Hawk was quite efficient plane in Finnish hands scoring 190 air victories and only 14 losses.

As for the finns.............did you ever look into the story of the finns and the Brewster Buffallo? They used that fighter to even greater effect, a plane that was allegedly the worst fighter of the war, and the finns claimed almost 500 kills with it (496) for the loss of 19 Bufallos. They were called the "pearl of the skies" or the "gentleman aiplane" compared to the "Killer Airplane" as they called the 109. The Finns seem to be insanely talented at air combat, and at taking the worst planes in the world and make them shine. :D
@kongurous
@kongurous 10 лет назад
There is a stark difference between the aircraft the Soviet Union flew against the Finns and the aircraft that Japan flew against the United States. Talent doesn't factor in nearly as much as you'd think.
@LupusAries
@LupusAries 10 лет назад
kongurous I was taking that into account my fried, the Zero is superior to the Bufallo, but so are the Mig-3, the Yak-1 and several others. The I-16 was a tough little machine, and certainly not a bad fighter, a well flown one could go toe to toe with a 109E, horizontally and vertically. koti.welho.com/myrjola/war/faf/brewkills.html That is a list of most of those claims. Read the notes and then look at the planes, Mig-3's among them, Yak-1s, P-40s and even La-5s. Talent or more correctly skill does factor more than you think, even the best aircraft in the world is worthless in the hands of a pilot that doesn't know how to use it. That is the lesson the VVS learned in ww2, it was bad at tactics and bled out by Stalin's purges and the huge losses it took in the early war. If you turnfight in a 109 against a Spit or a Hurricane, you will loose and deserve to be shot down! You want to know the reason the Americans got trashed by the Zero? Because they tried to turnfight against it. They did, untill they got their hands on a zero, figured out it's weaknesses and then developed tactics to use those weaknesses. You can win a fight against a Zero in a Gladiator, if your enemy is dumb enough to turnfight against you. Did that against a friend after a heated debate about which aircraft turned better. Skill and tactics are the factors who do decide Air Combat, although surprise can be a handy substitute if the pilot can shoot.

On the topic of Brewsters, the aircraft operated by Finnish Air Force were de-navalized F2A-1 (notably including the prototype airframe, XF2A-1), which went by the name of Brewster Type 239 as the export (B-239). They were not referred to as "Buffalos" in FAF service. The name Buffalo was given to the F2A-2 flown by the Royal Air Force (their export type name was B-339). The Finnish B-239's were generally just called Brewsters. They also had several advantages to their brethren used in the Far East and PTO (F2A-2 and F2A-3). As a result of being delivered without carrier landing equipment and life rafts, they were lighter than the original F2A-1; even after the Finns modified them with armoured headrests and four .50-caliber machine guns, as well as Vaisala reflector gunsight and metric instruments, they had better performance as the original F2A-1. The F2A-2 had a slightly more powerful but heavier engine, which didn't really favourably affect its performance at all (slightly higher top speed vs. increased wing loading on an already less maneuverable plane than the opposition). And since the F2A-2 had such abysmal performance they decided it would be good idea to add more armour to the F2A-3. You can guess how well that went. An additional advantage the Finnish Brewsters had was that their engines actually turned out to be very durable in cold conditions. But, even though the B-239 had better flight characteristics, armament, and gunsight than the F2A-2 and F2A-3, the main reason to its success against Soviet VVS was the tactics used by the Finnish Air Force, as opposed to the non-tactics used by the Soviets. Even so, the Brewster was obviously not going to do well against the more modern Soviet fighters, and was gradually phased out of frontline combat units as the Finnish Air Force started receiving Bf 109 G-2 and G-6 fighters from Germany in 1943.
@LupusAries
@LupusAries 10 лет назад
HerraTohtori Good points! I knew about the Version used by the Finns, but I omitted that, mostly due to the fact that I thought most people but us "aviation nuts" won't care about it. I didn't knew that they chose to up-armor the F2A-3, but it was a dumb decision, dropping the powerloading and maneuverability further. You're absolutely right about the tactics! I made a similar point, where somebody said that talent is not as important in air Combat. Tactics decide a fight, before it even begins, as they decide Positioning, energy states and if the enemy ever sees you. As for the Phase-out, yes it was gradual and began in 1943, but LeLv 24 still flew on Brewsters in May 1944 until they were transferred to HäLelv 26. LeLv 24 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._24_Squadron_%28Finland%29 HäLevlv koti.welho.com/myrjola/war/faf/brewster.html HäLelv 26: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._26_Squadron_%28Finland%29 I could rustle up a few additional links, but that will take some time.
@HerraTohtori
@HerraTohtori 10 лет назад
osp80 Finland received aircraft from the first manufacturing series of the F2A-1, including the prototype XF2A-1 (!). The quality control problems probably came later, when Brewster was unable to keep up with the production speed required to make the ordered F2A-3 and F2A-4 types, and had to start "cutting corners", so to speak. In Finnish use, the Brewsters had good reliability and I've never seen any anecdotes about them being poorly built (then again, Finnish pilots had no other American-built planes to compare). The engines of the Brewsters did perform better in Finland than in the tropic - partly because of temperatures, and partly because of Finnish mechanics.

I request that you do the Mustang Mk Ia. I'm sure the truth of how this plane came to be and how it led to the development of the P-51 D and all other variants will raise quite a few eye brows.

@TakoyaKyono
@TakoyaKyono 10 лет назад
LupusAries What was its reception like? I know the RAF hated the American engine in it as it meant that the Mustang suffered from poor performance in excess of 4,500 meters but that was lated resolved when they put a Merlin engine in to a later variant which meant she could out climb and out perform the BF 109s.

Bad Jingles. ;) In Band of Brothers the guns displayed are German leFH 18/40 guns. That in real life they where French is pretty much a given seeing as the Germans didn't turn out enough guns to equip there own troops, let alone second rate divisions in western Europe. Oh and Germany invaded France in may 1940. The winter war was over in early 1940. The Germans selling French aircraft is pretty difficult to do like this.The Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet union is what you mean. I am a history student, one of those guys who will point out every mistake you make Jingles. Love you to. :3
@DanielWW2
@DanielWW2 10 лет назад
Nicholas Otten LeFH 18/40 = German gun. Those guns you could see in Band of Brothers like I said. These pieces where designed by Rheinmetall. French guns would be Canon de 105 mle 1913, Canon de 105 court mle 1934 or Canon de 105 court mle 1935. That in real life they where either one of these is also what I said...

Jingles, what would your opinion be of adding Fokker planes to War Thunder? Fokker had a bunch of planes that were even flown by the RAF 321 and 322 squadrons (consisting of Dutch pilots that escaped the germans). Technically, the Fokker planes were mostly used by Germans, but also by British...

A Fokker .XXI would be very good because you have Dutch Versions, and Finnish versions (some with retractable landing gear), and Danish Versions with 20mm cannon. Plus the Fokker G.1 a "must have" in WT not to mention the Dutch used Curtis-Wright-21 ("american zero") With a climb rate 2000ft/min faster then the zero, (I'm pretty sure about that though it may be 200ft/min) A Finnish version of anything is almost always better.

Was looking for some research material today about what has easily been my favorite aircraft in the game over the last 5ish years and came across this, of course you've done a video on it Jingles. I honestly feel like the P-36 is easily one of the most underrated American aircraft of the war, from what I understand at Pearl Harbor the FIRST thing the Japanese attacked were the P-36s on the airfields because they knew it was the only aircraft that could compete with them, and then there are tales that German pilots actually held it higher than the early spitfires (Or maybe hurricanes?). Meanwhile like you said, the Fins loved it, EVERYBODY used it and despite being "Obsolete" it wasn't bad at all, it held it's own and then some. Plus I've found in Warthunder it's actually one of the few American planes at that BR that can get to the high altitude to meet the 109s in RB where the other heavier American aircraft are often a kilometer bellow on first contact. It truly is a sweetheart.

Not to be a pain in the arse, but it wouldn't have flown by the Finns in the Winter War...when Finland and the Soviet Union fought that war, France had yet to be invaded and conquered. It would be after the Winter War, and after France fell, that the Germans would have given the captured planes to Finland, to be used during Barbarossa (what the Finns would call the 'Continuation War'). There...nit picked.

I wonder sometimes if the P-36 didn't have more development potential than the P-40. The U.S. Army decided that radial engines were obsolete; hence the P-40's Allison engine - but it made the plane too front-heavy and ruined the good handling that the P-36 was known and loved for. A P-36 with a supercharged R-1830 engine and four M2 machine guns would have been more than a match for the Zero, Ki-43, or Bf 109 - same engine and armament as the F4F-3, but 1,500 pounds lighter.

Great video and lecture. I always felt the P-36/Hawk was an under-rated aircraft in its day. I believe the Mohawk was also used by the South Africans in the East Africa campaign in 1940. I also believe, but am less sure of this, the Vice French used it against the US invasion of Morocco in November 1942. In any event, thanks for the great lecture of this interesting aircraft.

The Roosevelt administration originally wanted to give them as Lend and Lease to the Soviet Union, but the Norwegian government in exile opposed it. Actually Jingles... and all the commenters too. I have a few corrections to make considering your awesome clip: First, the first Finnish AF Hawks were delivered from Germany in the summer of 1941, and by then the Winter War was over. They were just in time for the be a crucial part of the lineup at the start of the Continuation War. Second, the 105 mm Howitzers used by German troops at Brecourt Manor were not French, but German leFH18/40s and they were actually correctly portrayed in the Band of Brothers miniseries! Sources: forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=139075#p1691213 forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=179853 Thx for the video, I'm just a nitpicker! :D

Also, as a slighly related note, 8 of these howitzers were also deliveverd to Finnish army in 1944, but were too late not to see any action in the war.

Anyone else having trouble loading this video? I've tried a number of other Jingles vids as well as other random youtube vids and this is the only one I can't load so it will be interesting to know if anyone else is having the same issue?

Hey Jingles what is your opinion about the aircraft H - 1 "racer" or best know as Hughes - 1, it was one of the aircraft build by the famous Howard Hughes with the purpose to break the speed world record, we all know that it carried no guns at all, but we cant denied that it was one the fastest airplanes by the time and it does present some similarities with the Focke - Wulf 190 and the Japanese Zeros. It could be introduced in War Thunder with some guns, please comment

you forgot the 4th Hawk thats a level 2 premium gift aircraft. lol. just bustin' your balls jingles. Love these things, I've had them stuck in with my P40 and my Buffalo A3 since they turned up. Roll rate is garbage but matters little if you use her as a pure energy fighter.and if all else fails, go vertical. I sat there trolling a spitfire in my 36A for a solid 2 minutes before he finally goofed and managed to let me get behind him hahaha.
