Warcraft 3 reforged has made history with its community backlash. Nostalgia is a falling dagger... harnessing it can be easy profit, or horrific controversy and blizzard missed the mark to a brutal extreme.
Over time the game will likely improve but this remastered or reforged version has torched a significant amount of what little faith the blizzard community still had.

Once upon a time in my youth Blizzard was a respectable company that cared for their products. They cared and it showed, we cared because they gave us value... Now Activision has absolutely destroyed everything my once favorite company ever stood for. So long Blizzard, I shall remember you as you were, but I will not be fooled by what you are.

Thanks for giving modders the spotlight they deserve. A couple of fantastic examples of the top of my head: Xcom EU/EW with the Long War mod, officially recognized by the Firaxis devs to be the far superior version of the game (and even endorsed by said devs). Brutal DOOM, Seargant Mark's masterpiece upgrade to the grandfather of the FPS genre. Makes the game so much fun to play. Team Fortress, a quake mod that eventually grew into the TF 2 we all know and love. A game that I've been playing since it's release and it STILL manages to surprise me constantly with hilarious happenings. Many, many really well made mods for Xcom 2 that can be mixed, matched and edited to create a game that is EXACTLY how you want it to be. Modders are amazing and I appreciate you making that point.

I'm a game dev with a decade of development the majority of it in AAA. Remasters can be very hard to make. Lost data, missing information, old engines, bad management, corporate greed and a lot more. Taking all that into account this is unacceptable and an absolute debacle. The meddling with the original game is unwarranted and the TOS change is disgusting. This reflects the poor state of the gaming industry. People that do not care about games are in charge and it is becoming more and more visible. The situation is repulsive to me as a developer and a gamer.

Microsoft (or rather Forgotten Empires) managed to make an amazing remaster (and expansion!) of Age of Empires 2, and that's a 20 year old game. It is quite possible to get remasters of old games right - we saw an example of that just a couple months ago.

@Agent 005 Its a shitty thing to do , yes - yet its not gambling in literal sense , which is why they have been able to elude the regulations concerned thus far. There's no monetary return most of the time. There might be exceptions like the CS:GO skins' black market etcetera , however they still aren't direct transits of monetary gain as is acquired conventionally in Gambling from the company's end.

Honestly, to map makers out there who are on the off-chance reading this... be creative about it. Don't make a suddenly shocking map, do something elaborate like DOTA but make it about something controversial... like a Defence Of The Hong Kong... then somehow make it a very popular game type that everyone wants to play online so they can't just get rid of it easily...

Check out AOE 2 Definitive Edition! A 20 year old RTS remastered properly! Came out 2 months ago with no coverage, has a couple bugs, but overall is magnificent, great value, and tons of fun.

What made me the most mad, I didn't buy reforged because I knew it would flop. But trying to launch basic WC3, the 1.3 GB Windows XP Compatible WarCraft III - was irreversibly patched with always-online DRM, removal of core features, and bloating the game to 30 GB. For years I've been running a "WarCraft RPG 2e" campaign (published by Sword & Sorcery for the D&D 3.5e ruleset, and I've been adapting my players story into a custom campaign. WIth reforge removing custom campaigns... Well. RIP 6 years of work.

@@JoViljarHaugstulen I dug out my battlechest, fired up my Pentium 4 that had patches hard downloaded onto it, patched the game to its 2012 iteration, then reverse engineered the patching process to create an unpatching tool to remove the reforging nonsense. While your method would have been a lot quicker, I couldn't shove it in blizzard's face quite as hard.

2:30 Yes graphical downgrades are common for upcoming AAA hype train games that maybe will run smoothly on bleeding edge hardware. But when you are remastering a game over 15 years old, and you are advertising a graphical level that still runs great on any modern system (even internal graphics chipsets) there is no reason to pull a bait and switch.

In Europe, because of a loophole, most digital game stores have customers sign off their right to refunds. You can't have a refund because you agreed to "no refunds" when buying it.

Granted I have only been watching this channel for about a year now, but in that time, I realized he doesn't cover JRPGs and that whole category like at all (please prove me wrong if he does, but the general consensus is that he covers triple A gaming mostly on the "American" company side of things, excluding the discussions about Blizzard and the Chinese markets). Even though, on the other side of the industry (typically some Japanese companies), there are scummy practices worthy of discussion there.

EA's downfall was Battlefront II quite honestly , Anthem's fuckup is completely and solely on Bioware's shoulders. They had fuck-more than sufficient time and resources , yet lack of an efficient leadership and creative vision sealed its sorry fate. The more you read about what went behind the scenes during its development , the more you start to realize that EA had close to no role in the dumpsterfire of a title that Anthem materialized into.

If they were smart, the EULA would say that you give them right of first refusal to commercialize. Then you would have to pitch something you made to them first, and they would have to say 'No, we don't want this.' before you could bring it to market. Ownership remains with the creator(s) but the only way for Activision to lose out on another DOTA situation is if they say 'No, we don't want this.'

@@dayvie9517 They're talking about the second one - AoE 2. Though even the AoE 1 remaster is in a much better state now. Plus if you don't like them, the old versions still work fine, unlike here. Plus Plus if you have the old versions, buying the new one is a bit cheaper. Plus Plus Plus the AoE2 remaster specifically isn't just a remaster, it's a fully packed expansion as well. And still cheaper than this W3 mess.

This is what happens when companies get too big and make too much. I'd like to think that those who made WC3 originally are happy for the creators of DoTA. Their map editor was a gateway for these guys to make it into the industry and be extremely successful. Now the higher-ups today just want to make sure they don't miss out on a couple bucks, even if it means stealing the hard work of others.

I literally just watched an IGN speedrun video where the devs of the remastered Crash Bandicoot watch someone beat the game in 40 minutes. The commentary in that really shows the difference between a group that want to shove out a "remaster" for easy money and little efford and one that is allowed to both be creative and spend the time to ensure the new game is both better and consistent with the original. Hell the Crash dev's even added features that they knew speed runners had used, basically exploits in the original game, because they got that feedback from testers. Honestly Blizzard has a massive hole to pull themselves out of... I don't think this game can ever recover fully from this.

Another example of why community made content are always better than developer made content is StarCraft 2. Everything you see in StarCraft 2 could be done through StarCraft Broodwar's 'primitive' editor. In fact, the bossfights, the puzzles, other mechanics blended with RTS you see on StarCraft 2 stemmed from community made maps like LotC and AoD and many many more.

I still cant understand why they wouldnt "reforge" everything in a similar way to Heroes of the Storm....its made to work from the perspective, uses the more stylized look....and looks great. I always imagined that the remaster would look like that....Hell the grass in there looks much better that the moving grass in the remaster.....

I dont think Blizzard realize DOTA 2 is actually competitive on a professional level because it actually has balance. Blizzard would just make noob-friendly characters and screw over the professional players and obliterate the IP even if they can get their hands on it.

This was very thorough, thank you. I was really-really into the original game back in the day, and ready to overlook my grown distaste of Blizzard over-the-years since for some sweet nostalgia (over various issues I felt ethically disagreeable since the mid-2000s, and how they are always so slow with damage control) . This copyright control issue and greedy mismanagement is just more fuel to the fire.

It's exactly like you said: you have a better ownership with pirated games... I was willing tp buy this game, very excited because I'm a huge warcraft 3 fan, but as a rule of life, I NEVER buy pre-sales on movies or video games, I always rely on multiple critics before spending money... It was a shame that this could be something astounding and became pure trash... The greed of Activision & Blizzard at its finest...

From wikipedia: "There are certain features missing from Reforged, including some that will be released later (such as the competitive ladder of Warcraft III)". They removed the ladder from an RTS game. Let that sink in.

This isn't what they needed or wanted.. but it MUST be what they were expecting. You can't, you cannot, you CAN NOT ever convince me that there were gamers or devs at blizzard who saw this final product and said, "yeah this is great! People are gonna love it!" I can only imagine the guys on the team saying, "this is not done. It's not ready. We can't release this." And having some suit tell them "shut up and release it, cur!"

I blame Activision for the shit with community made content in that new EULA. The fact that this software giant has fallen so hard, due to a greedy ass publisher sickens me. Most AAA games are no longer an art form, but rushed crap, littered with greed.

As a person who had never got to experience warcraft 1, 2 or 3 and its expansions I was going to get this to see how it was etc. But i'm just immensely disappointed with blizzard in general, especially with warcraft based stuff

I find when a review comes in a bit later, it can cover more of the backlash and more sources. Usually the first-to-market reviews are light, missing important aspects, or too reactionary.

Blizzard once scrapped an entire MMO because it didn't live up to their quality standards, this is not that Blizzard. They knew this was an unacceptable release but they jumped the gun anyway just so they can sneak it into their Q4 earnings report. In todays age of greedy publishers a game doesn't release when its ready, it releases when it fits in a time frame to make the most money.

I have a friend that works middle management at Blizzard. Irvine, CA is my hometown and i've been to blizz a few times. I have a bit more info than what is stated is publicly known. I can't say much, but let's just say that they put themselves in a position where their deadline approached faster than they had initially thought. If blame were to be placed, it certainly wouldn't be on the developers. They did a great job with what they had.

Thanks for the summary. I had low expectations of WC3RF going into this and the only thing that would've bothered me personally was the missing cinematics from Blizzcon. I never owned the original game and just borrowed it from a friend to try out. So figured might as well get a copy of a supposedly better version while preordering to get a mount for WoW. I really didn't feel like watching multiple vids from people who obsess over the same outrage again and again like Bellular.

Problem with the dota thing with blizzard. Basically Dota offered themselves to blizzard but bliz said that MOBA's wont be a thing so they let it go. Well you can guess how that ended. Now blizzard wants to own custom game that the community made in hopes to prevent the whole DOTA mistake they did. Also one of the reasons why HOTS wasnt as big as LOL or DOTA because they shat on the MOBA genre in general. I was hoping to see a recreation of classic DOTA in reforge. Well Im disappointed now.

I was curious on how they fucked this one up. They had StarCraft remastered and then did Warcraft 3 and didn't do anything near the same. They just had to update the game to fit newer systems, and update the graphics. But they screwed the pooch. Edit: Also per the crap maps, that was a no shit Sherlock moment. You make ToS that goes against map creators making the high tier ones stay away while the crap ones make their garbage.

I knew someone would ask this, checked the comments. Go look for eskyrimmods and on that site search for Team TAL. It should be from one of the Black Desert packs, or BDOR if you want to search for it directly. Good luck though, sadly the modding team basically jumped ship in 2019, abandoned their patreons and there's no port to Special Edition, it's all for Skyrim LE.

Can I just make a remark that the updated graphics aren't likely done by ActiBlizz as well? I heard that a Malaysian studio - known as Lemon Sky Studio that also makes visual art for many other games is responsible for creating the concept arts and 3d arts in Warcraft III Reforged. I don't have a clear understanding of the matter, but it is very likely that all ActiBlizz has done is downgrading the game.

Actually WC3 classic wasn't patched to be worse, it was fully deleted and replaced with WC3 Refunded without option to turn on new models. It's not like server was return less options for old client, it's old client of the game was killed and if you have it in some way (torrents, disc, but without updating from servers), you can't play online, you have no access to servers and ladders, etc.

When I first heard about "Warcraft 3: Remastered edition gets record low score on metacritic; worst game ever!" I initially thought, "Wow, what hyperbole and entitlement. What could possibly be so bad?" Then I watched the videos from RU-vidrs covering the topic. "Oh. So that's- OH. OOOHHHH......OOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHH.....OH DEAR GOD NO...." So, yeah. Besides the typical not-as-good-as-shown-in-the-demo, and the features downgrade, and the incredible new low for anti-consumer policies of "we own everything you make", it also adds the crowning middle-finger on top by ruining a previously good/already released game by simply launching. I think that DEFINITELY earns this game its own spot in video game hell.

my theory is, that at this point blizzard employees try and actively commit brand suicide because they are so fed up with what activision did to them, so they actively try and deliver the worst game launch ever. there is no way this happened without intention. i just cant imagine a company being so dysfunctional to do something like that
