An Asian computer hacker with rainbow hair is more interesting than everything else coming out lately.
"For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game-it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships-only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire."

Idk about y’all but I really liked the series, both warcross and wild card. I liked the concept and the way the world looked, and even though I’m peeved about how much they shove petty crushes and love stories down your throat (all YA’s do...tragic) I liked the book as a whole. I thought the plot was cohesive.

I had the opposite journey with Warcross - I'd thought I'd be getting something interesting with how much it was hyped and the fairly interesting blurb. But what I got was a stupid hot mess, that was way worse than my worst case scenario for the book. I'm actually surprised you liked it, but each to their own.

i read a book by sergej lukyanenko (author of night watch) a whole while back... like 15 years back, give or take. the overall plot is helluva familiar to this one. Also sorta near future, tech that builds the vr to a degree and allows your brain to "imagine" it into something so realistic you can actually forget it's not rl, hackers that can work that tech without being fooled by it, and a game they have to cheat-beat in order to achieve what they have to (in that case it was doom, if I'm not mistaken). coincidence?

Anyone else think that adding someone to the biggest tournament who also happens to be famous for CHEATING INTO THE TOURNAMENT is just a really bad and very suspicious idea? I really like Warcross, but it did have major problems, like you said. I'm excited for wildcard. However, Young Elites was better.

I honestly thought Warcross was garbage. I thought it was predictable and stupid and poorly written... but for some reason it was fun??? Like I recently reread it and I thought it was bad, but I could not stop.
