Warcry - Legends and the Future of Warcry

In a recent WarCom article, GW talked about some of the Age of Sigmar models that are leaving the range. For the Warcry community in particular that list included the 'classic' chaos warbands from the first edition of the game. This caused some concern.
In this video I talk about the models leaving, what GW means when it talks 'Legends', why GW are doing this and what it means for Warcry. I talk about new editions and the pros and cons of having rules when the models are no longer around.
Long and short, Warcry is in a good place. In a years time we MIGHT lose the rules for some old warbands but we should enjoy them while we can.

Those first edition warbands are some of the best miniatures that GW have ever done imo. I stopped buying new Warcry boxes after Bloodhunt and have still not built the terrain for that or anything from Heart of Ghur.

I've heard of a few players sticking with the first edition and having tons of fun with it. I never got all the classic warcry warbands and didn't play through all the tome of champions scenarios so there is tons of content to get through!

Regarding 3.0 I think they won’t support the 1.0 warbands. I also think it’s a real possibility that they won’t even include rules for the models from AoS. It seems more realistic that we get a compendium with all of the 2.0 teams. The current edition is way too bloated. Lastly I wouldn’t be all that surprised if they stop Underworlds and merge it into WarCry in order to make a more competitive game.

Warcry is in a wierd spot. There is part of the community that wants it to be a competitive game, and some who want it to be a narrative/casual game. Unfortunately its very hard with warcry as it is, to be truly competitive. Yes having everything in AOS as a model is nice, but a nightmare to try to balance. Also the way the game was originally played, there were just some missions and deployments that made teams just loose before starting, affectionately called, being "Warcried." So I am not sure how it will happen, but hopefully either mordhiem will release as the narrative skirmish game Necromunda equivalent (story driven, loot and gear customization, less balanced focused on creating fun experiences uses all aos models. Warcry will be the competitive skirmish game, the kill team equivalent (finate knowable but adjustable teams, with a knowablefield for balance purposes), or vise versa.

For sure, it's bad for the AoS players but at least they know what's happening. For Warcry we know the models are leaving but we don't know whats happening with the rules. Definitely a concern, even if we won't see a new edition for at least a year.

I think Warcry being insulated from AoS should happen. Not needing to buy a warband to play Warcry has to be hurting sales to some extent.
@optimalgamestate
@optimalgamestate 2 месяца назад
Yeah, it does make it hard for the studio to know if we're buying for Warcry or AoS. Same deal with Killteam and 40k. On the plus side, since it's the same team for AoS and Warcry they might not care. They should know selling the same models for two games is going to sell more. Hopefully theyve seen the increase in underworlds models sales right after the white dwarf with warcry rules arrives 😁

Not all of us knew about GW's horrible practices. I'm a new player that started playing GW products last year and I will never buy another product again. There are sooooo many good games out there now, why would I want to support one that literally makes me rebuy things every 2-4 years?!?! the people that know this and are still willing to shell out the money over and over again are just simps for the company. GW is creating a "pay to play" model, where you pay them to play their games and stay competitive. Your entire argument boils down to, since we already have invested so much into it we should just keep playing. Even though GW knows this and is manipulating you with the same idea lol. I guess if I had a long standing nostalgia for the company/game I may see your avenue, but this is like driving head on into freeway traffic not excepting to get hit. Gluck to all you that will stick around.
@optimalgamestate
@optimalgamestate 3 месяца назад
Fair enough! I'm not here shilling for GW, just explaining how their business model works. If this isn't something you were aware of and do now, then I think I've done a good job. Now typically the model is that books go out of date but the models are still useable, which is why people are concerned about this recent article which has messed with that expectation. You will also find many content creators recommend you never buy the books and instead and instead find the rules online. Also not discussed in this article is that the prices include a massive profit margin, so they could sell their products cheaper but like the money. That's GW. As you say, I'm already invested but I don't actually need to spend a penny more and I can keep playing forever!

One thing that bugs me about Warcry discussions, not only about this particular recent idiocy by GW, but in general about Warcry made on youtube, is ALWAYS through the lens of "competitive play". It's rather telling how the presumption revolves around this, when the vast majority pf the consumer and playerbase, never involves themselves in such, nor do they aspire to. Yet here we are, discussing this issue under that filter. As for the issue itself: "meh" GW pulling the plug on basically half of the available options for one game, because they aren't being used in another, is like ripping Goliaths and Escher from Necromunda simply because they aren't relevant in BIG 40K. I am seeing quite a few people reaching really hard to justify these actions by GW, yet the simple fact is that this is an obvious act that doesn't reflect a healthy desire for GW to continue supporting the game, giving customers confidence that the money they work hard for is going to matter beyond 3 years. These warbands being online only, and constantly out of stock for the past two years is evidence enough of that. I am still salty about not being able to find any Corvus Cabal sets in this time. So yes, Warcry is being supported, in the loosest and most generous sense of the term. However, its only being supported by proffering the newest products, and even stuff you bought less than 2 years ago (Hashut) is now irrelevant going forward. If you bought stuff form V1, then their attitude seems to be, according to their actions: "Thanks for being an early adopter, sucker. You could still playing this game you already invested a large sum of money and time in, if only you bought more stuff this month. Sucks to be you." To which I say: "Hmmm I hear the Elegoo mars is on sale this month. Time to switch to the models I want for a hell of a lot cheaper than what is offered by this company and their abusive attitude and practices towards their consumerbase." They dont want my money to buy Corvus Cabal, obviously. So time to buy models from somebody who arent pratts and proxy them instead. And it won't matter, because competitive events are irrelevant to 99+% of the population.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a big reply! Definitely appreciated. - 'Competitive Play' - Without doubt more people play Warcry at home than at tournaments. In this instance, people are trying to make sense of Why GW are making these decisions. Since we don't have sales data, people often (mistakenly imo) fall back on tournaments. Notably Warcry tournaments have been getting larger but they'll never be as large as 40k or AoS. I've also heard several content creators who don't pay much attention to Warcry suggest that it might be dying as _they_ don't see people playing it. - The issue itself. I think your comparison with Necromunda is pretty spot on. The key part here is Necromunda is part of the specialist studio like but Warcry is part of the main studio like Killteam. So they want to drive sales for AoS while Necromunda is content to just drive sales for Necromunda. That's not an excuse, it's just a possible way for us to explain the decision. - The lack of faith for players to invest in Warcry is certainly a valid concern, I've seen several players and potential plays say exactly that. - On Warcry being supported: that we're continuing to get releases and the model appears to have shifted to the Killteam one (where Warcry warbands are used as a chain into AoS) I think we're in a position where Warcry will be a clear part of the business mode. That gives me more faith in the games continued support but of course that doesn't necessarily mean we're getting the support we actualy want. Case in point, the Tome of Champions was some of the best content from the first edition and we haven't seen it since. - On 3d printing, yeah for sure. I'm very tempted to build a Dwarf killteam with Highland minis. We, the fans, also have enough of a grasp on the system that we can make our own profiles, missions, and campaigns. Fingers crossed GW don't fuck this up, but if they do we can still have a good time playing the game we love without them,

Okay. Savage Orcs are still in The Old World. I guess you can’t say savage anymore, but the option to run Orcs without armor and with war paint instead is still there. I would think that, given that you can still flavor your Boyz as “Bonesplitterz”, GW would want to port the existing AoS models into TOW, even if it’s just as special by order models. I honestly believe that the popularity of TOW caught GW by surprise and they may be rethinking the legacy factions, like Vampire Counts and Skaven, and are considering bringing them back in a second round of releases.
@optimalgamestate
@optimalgamestate 3 месяца назад
I'm pretty sure Savage Orks didn't get rules for the new version of the Old World. They certain still exist in both settings whatever you might call them (and 40k also), but to play them you'd need to go outside the official rules.

There’s not a specific unit entry, it’s just a 0-1 option per 1000 pts under the Orc Mobs entry. Replace Lt Armor with Frenzy, with the option of taking war paint and big stabbas. Same under the Boar Boyz entry. Not called savage Orcs, but clearly savage Orcs.

Personally I think Horns of Hashut might be gone for good. GW seems to have had a crisis of identity since Old World's return and have had a messy last minute rush to further divorce the two games. I would conjecture that Old World got custody of Chaos Dwarves in the divorce, and now Horns of Hashut have nowhere to move on to after being cut from Slave to Darkness now that Legion of Azgor (AoSified name for Chaos Dwarves) likely will never become a thing. So I would not be surpised if GW just hand- waves them away like they were never there.
@earnestwanderer2471
@earnestwanderer2471 3 месяца назад
That’s the way it feels to me as well. TOW seems to be way more popular that GW expected and they really, really want to keep TOW and AoS as separate as possible. Hence Beastmen being pulled out of AoS. I’m nearly certain that your logic is correct. Hashut = Chaos Dwarfs and if CD were coming to AoS, they wouldn’t have been pulled. So my money 💰 is on Hashut’s chosen people being earmarked for TOW, probably in a second wave release with Cathay.

GW really can’t keep everything in production forever. It’s not just producing the models, it’s trying to keep the rules balanced both within a faction, as well as between factions. As sort of a goofy example, I really, really wish I could walk into a Chevrolet dealership and order a brand new 1964 model Chevelle. But for a host of reasons, there’s no way that would be feasible.

The sky isn't falling. GW is heavily supporting Warcry with a stream of new releases. The game is moving on.. It stinks if you're just finishing your Splintered Fang paint job (cough cough, me) and you've supported the game for years, but this practice isn't new. I picked up a 2nd taranulous brood sprue to spam spiders, that didn't age well. This isn't new. Just ask whfbattles players. Warcry has a good spot as the skirmish entry to one of the two main wargames and new content keeps coming. I believe we've got years more of game support in line.. But old sprues are getting chopped. It feels bad yeah.. But nobody can stop me playing my Splintered Fang amongst friends long after GW moves on from Warcry.
