Taito's Wardner arcade from 1987 one credit clear challenge.
Played by sneekyweezel.
This was an old score to settle with this game, I can still remember seeing "Wardner" in just about every Pizza Hut in the world when I was a kid... anyhow it was known in the U.S. called "Pyros". Erika and Pyros (Dover) are lured into the woods by an evil wizard and she gets turned into a crystal ball and carried away by one of the wicked baby dragons to Mr.Wardner, the main evil boss. Pyros goes after her to face off with Wardner.
It was really a great game released by Taito in 1987, Pyros must face all kinds of monsters on his way to rescue his girl. Along the way there are shops in between stages where a clock that gives an extra minute, a cape and needle that protect you from a small amount of damage, and three different swords can be purchased. Also there are magic fairies that destroy monsters on contact, an owl and giant flying turkey to help you. I've been trying to find this game on RU-vid.for five years, mainly because I kept on using different names like Dorus or Pyrus instead of Pyros. So,it's called Both Wardner and Pyros (U.S) I finally found it at last. I remember playing this game at Pizza Hut too in my hometown of Detroit when I was younger. I never made it off the first level,but I sure had fun playing it. (Hey I was young, reckless and clumbsy when it came to playing arcade games.) Lol such great memories. Thank you SneekyWeezel for the upload.

The first (and only) time I've ever seen an arcade cabinet of this was in a YMCA, of all places, in Burlington, Iowa in 1988. Very fun game, hard as hell when you're 7 years old though.

Thanks for the vid - I came across a single cabinet of this game and did play it a bit - and the memory of it, in particular some of the music , staying with me. However, this playthorugh confirms what I remember being a pretty lackluster game considering it was released a couple of years after the far superior GnG which it clearly emulated.

Completed this game as a 13 year old in the arcades at Butlins. No maps, no Internet, just a weeks holiday and as many 50p's as I could get my parents to ignore me for. I have no idea how I did it. It had to be on one life, to do it (happy to be proved wrong) as shown here. Great game.

I remember this one. I also beat the game in one credit, with no death. I think my score was just beyond 160 000 though, not 190 000 like this one. The games of this era rewarded skill, then you could play for a long time for the same credit. Some time during the 90ies graphics got better, but prices went up, plus the game would always keep killing you, regardless of skill.

Yeah I couldn't beat it at the time. I was so frustrated with how hard the end fight was because of that.

Apparently the faeries damage enemies on contact and that's how he killed the end boss.

One of my most loved arcade games back in the day...didnt think about using the fairies at the end to kill the boss like that, well done.

*What?!?* All that time I spent playing Wardner (or Pyros, in my neck of the woods) and I never thought to walk up to Wardner's final form, turn my butt to him and kill him with the fairies! I had to do it the hard way: Stand in the middle, left, right, shoot, left, right, shoot, left, right, shoot.... Good game! :)

+BloodyBay Yeah, I remember getting to the end and realizing how tough that was going to be. Had my buddy tapping on the fire button as fast as possible while I dodged left and right. I think it took about 45 minutes total, all on one quarter, but I stopped to get all the treasure along the way.

This was one of my favorite games together with Spy hunter during the late 90. I played this game countless times and to be honest I did love to see the game on Android and iOS. I love the experiences you go through and the music

About 1991-92, my first summer after discovering computer games/arcades. It was in Zamardi(lake Balaton, Hungary). Since then I was trying to find this game but I did not know the name. Only a few pictures in my memories(blue-red cloak, flying with the bird and the shop) was not enough to find it... so far. Thank you!!!

As I recall, if you did not latch onto the bird, you had boulders or fireballs fall from the sky and you were always too slow to avoid them.

Played this a bit when I was a student on the original cabinet but played it a lot of it once MAME supported it. I was always able to get to the final boss on 1 credit but didn't know that trick for a quick defeat!!! Must boot up MAME again and try this - might be a while getting the feel of the game again though as it has been quite a while. Great game.

13:47secret extra life right there, in the fire at the end of that trough of fire. Just drop right into the very end part and you get a life. :)

Usando la campanilla para subir y bajar por esas escaleras varias veces podías conseguir vidas infinitas si mal no recuerdo. Al menos en algún momento de la partida es donde yo las conseguía asi.

After years of search for this arcade game I found it (I just remembered it was made by Taito), but I was looking for a game about Dragon Ball (probably because of the crystal balls), I played it when I was 12 years old. Congratulation for having ended it with no death !

Amazing! You have defeated Wardner with the fairies? I used to play this game in a bar in Italy nearby my first school with a dear friend of mine, Daniela, and we never imaged that it could be that simple! (assuming that you can carry the fairies so far.

sneekyweezel Congrats. I have been able to do the same only saving and reloading with MAME. Have you ever noticed that it is impossible to complete the game with the Sun sword but with no fairies? The ghosts will always kill you no matter what, unless you have the Moon sword.

This is the only game I've ever completed in the arcades, so it must have been easy because I'm no skilled gamer. They had it at Haven Holiday Camp in Whitby back in the day and I got good enough to complete it regularly on a single 10p play.

great to see this! i watched jeff eisenhuth win this coin op game at the pirates den in fergus falls in around 1976. that game was harder to beat, with the “devil” at the end shooting fireballs (to dodge) down for a long time …. must be a difference in the rom? or pcb board? eric boe

Damn, I always wondered how to get that blue cape at the beginning. Didn't know you could squeeze under the tree log! You definitely make this look easier than it is (to mere mortals). I used to play this at "The Fun Machine" in Orlando Florida, but I'm pretty sure it was "Wardner", not "Pyros". Maybe they imported it?

That was and still is my favorite game of my childhood. I didn't know that the last chief,I can beat him by touching him the Angel's. It's very strange that I didn't manage to do that. I also remember that there was a ladder that I could earn 99 lifes. Hahaha. Unforgettable years....

The only arcade game I ever beat I flipped score on galaga once was playing a guy in shop next door I never understood why he was given first on scoreboard then I realized now that I’m older it’s cuz I flipped score and had fewer points but I won our bet just on principle best day had oh wait me and a friend became champs on nba jam beating all teams I was never good at video games but still love playing super Mario donkey Kong donkey Kong jr and galaga

I never made it to the end with the fairies but there was a trick, you kneel down similar to where you are and just fire and he can't hit you so you just stay in the one place the whole time.
