The organ is one of the most unique things that can be played, in my opinion. Its actually where the saying "Pulling out all the stops" came from, to pull out all the stops on an organ is to fully use all of the pipes. Pretty cool stuff!

From the moment i understood the weakness of my flesh... it disgusted me... I craved the strength and certainty of steel, i aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh as it will not decay and fail you, one day the crude biomass you call temple will wither and you will beg my kind to save you. But i am already saved! For the machine is immortal!

This games entire audioscape, not just the OST but the way sound is woven in to the gameplay, the feel of playing it, is really fantastic. There is a ton of warhammer 40k games, Mechanicus is probably the best of them.

Mechanicus wasn't as successful as I feel it deserved to be which is a shame as the devs were clearly passionate about the game and the universe and the results of that passion speak for themselves. The whole game oozes character and is certainly the best 40k game I've played when it comes to representing the source. The sound design in particular is excellent and really elevates the experience, no one really knew what Adeptus Mechanicus music would sound like before this game and now every fan I know says they can't imagine it any other way. It's very dissappointing that as far as I can tell this soundtrack is Guillaume David's only publicly available work anywhere as I'd love to hear more of his stuff based on his showing here. If you're interested in checking out more from this game I'd recommend Noosphere or Overlord, though honestly all the tracks are fantastic.

It's an indie title it did well for that. Sure the atmosphere was 10/10 but the gameplay was really simple for a turn-based-strat game. It also doesn't help that it's a very niche genre with heavily fragmented playerbase half of which are still stuck wiht homm 3 after 20 years .

Everything about WH40k Mechanicus is perfection in establishing the feel of the Adeptus Mechanicus faction--and that's just talking the sound design. Hearing Noosphere is what finally got me to fire up the game itself.

I interpret this song as a hymn being sung by machines. A hymn that organic minds can’t understand fully.
@PhantomSinger1

Those pulled switches/levers are called stops, which may be where the phrase "pulling out all the stops" came from. Each stop controls a series of pipes that produce a different type of sounds from other wind instruments; flutes, trumpets, even reed instruments like a giant oboe. If the pipes are tuned properly, they'll harmonize with multiple stops pulled. I don't think there's a stop to make it sound like there's a loose valve flapping around, but that effect can be added in editing.

Gosh that organ is 40k as hecc. Everything in 40k is gothic taken to the extreme, and that organ fits it so well If you're interested in checking out more music from Warhammer 40k games, I highly recommend the Dawn Of War III soundtrack by Paul Leonard-Morgan. It's a very different soundtrack to this, but it's just as interesting at least (in my mind, even more interesting). My favourites from the soundtrack are Unite The Wayfarers and Where There Is Darkness. The rest of the Mechanicus soundtrack is also awesome.

Mechanicus has some incredible music, I highly recommend checking even more of its music out. This is pretty well the theme, I'd like to think. The theme of humans who worship the Machine God, and the choice of instrumentation is *perfect* for that. Heavy, deep, awe inspiring synths with a pipe organ just sitting on top. It's so awesome. Warhammer 40k is a wild trip, but the Mechanicus faction is likely my favorite. Literal belief can cause their machinery to do wild things normally not possible - and can even *talk* with machines and seemingly actually understand them. Their Tech Priest caste regularly doesn't even speak in spoken words when possible - they instead make bursts of staticky noise that is a stream of code that others of their kind can understand, thus transferring knowledge far faster than otherwise possible.

Hi Jesse, as a big fan of Warhammer 40,000 (or 40k for short) I wanna give a bit of context in the most simple way possible for what is going on with this song's title because 40k has almost 40 years worth of lore at this point. The Mechanicus is a machine worshipping cult of humanity that follow their God the Omnissiah and believe all machines have a latent spirit that makes them work so they try to appease machine spirits by doing Gregorian chanting and burning incense to appease the machine spirit because they forgot how machines work a long time ago. So you get Gregorian chant monks with swooping organ sounds to combine with techno noises like gears, cogs, and static. It's really neat

Yes Mechanicus OST is so frigging good As for the game. You basicaly play a group of priests that believe Machines are a piece of God and you raid a world spanning tomb of Undead Space Egyptian Terminators that got woken up by you and dont like you poking in their stuff. (This Sentence is pretty tame for 40k in terms of ridiculus)

MECHANICUS This game is SO GOOD. The music, the audio engineering for every little thing, from how they create the sounds for the Adeptus Mechanicus themselves - with the younger ones still having a slight human sound to their speech while the older ones sounding almost completely like this mash of machinery and electronics, - to the sound effects of the countless ridiculous attachments and weapons these technophile cultists use, the music is this gorgeous techno-gothic soundscape that really elevates the experience. Warhammer 40k games tend to have forgettable music, but this one stands out and really has found a home in the world of video game music. Noosphere in particular is the track that tends to be recommended the most and talked about the most BY fans of the game, it's keeping much in theme with the techno-gothic of a grim-dark future, but has an almost LIVING feel, best described as the track 'breathing in and out' over the course of its length. So glad you did this, it made me happy.

I can't even begin to explain the insanity that is Warhammer 40k. Just imagine a hyper dark sci fi universe where we live in the year 40k and everything is screwed up beyond imaginable. All factions in this universe are so stupidly overpowered. From super human religios power armored warriors that shoot explosive redbull cans from an automatic bolter "rifle" to eldrich horrors that turn your inside out, aliens with railguns with reach beyond comprehension, undead death robots with weapons that disintegrate everything and murder bugs that consume worlds as a snack. And that is the tame stuff from that universe! Anyway, FOR THE EMPEROR!

Some context for the song: Warhammer 40,000 is a science fiction setting where humanity has spread across the galaxy, but with the caveat that it is controlled by a vast Empire, one that venerates the God-Emperor of Mankind (or else). One of the few quasi-heresies permitted in this setting is the Machine Cult of Mars, which worships the Emperor as the living embodiment of technological progress and scientific understanding (which they call the Omnissaiah). The Machine Cult also, quite literally, worships technology, and strictly regulates all knowledge related to the use, construction, and repair of technological artifacts. In a thematic sense, this song encapsulates that peculiar relationship to technology perfectly. Sacred, but also oppressive, and slightly glitchy, a sign of sacred technology that has begun to fail due to a deterioration of humanity's understanding of the machines that enable its existence across the stars. Even in such oppression, though, there is beauty to be found, a hint of the divine in the whirring of servos and the buzzing of cogitators.

I agree, I also wish they had more of that song. But it is a brief yet perfect example of what the Mechanicus is. A technocratic religious organization that is the same time highly advanced and yet regressive and archaic at the same time. The buzzing and glitches and faint sounds of gears are all intentional.

I'm French, the game was made by French people, but above all, the music was made with a real organ from a cathedral (I forget which one, that of Anger but I'm not sure). And yes, we knew a real Emperor, so for the Omnissiah, we go to cathedrals to glorify them.
@MythagoWoods

Warhammer 40k can be summed up in that it's a world where everything is terrible all the time. "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only War." Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus is about a squad of the Adaptus Mechanicus, think engineers that like to replace their body parts with tech because the flesh is weak, as they delve into a Necron (Think Undead Robots... it's complicated) fortress to extract artifacts and relics for the benefit of the Imperium. The entire soundscape is a whole mood where it is mostly very subdued with that ominous feeling of dread with mechanical creeping vibes, organs building in the background. One of the best examples would actually be it's primary theme called "Noosphere".

This ended up a bit of a long comment, but it could've been a lot longer lol. If you're not familiar, Warhammer started as a table top war game made by Games Workshop since around the 80s, I think... It's a somewhat grim fantasy setting... Warhammer 40K is the science fiction (although carrying across much of the fantasy) version, set in the year 40,000... Their method of FTL travel is traversing a demon-infested hell dimension, which requires a psychic beacon from a dying demi-god of a man, the God Emperor of Mankind, who has been on life support for about 10,000 years... Life support that involves a crazy machine that is slowly breaking down and they lack the knowledge to fix... Oh and it also takes a sacrifice of about a 1000 souls a day to keep him alive too... Technology is barely understood because of all the knowledge lost over the millennia... The techno-cult of the Mechanicum, on Mars, worship the spirit of machines and are responsible for pretty much all human tech in the galaxy... A mixture of monks, mechanics and the machine parts they replace parts of their bodies with... I believe in this particular game they are up against the Necrons... A race of aliens from before humanity, who were tricked into giving up their souls and flesh to become weird, metal, relentless, skeleton soldier... things?...They were dormant upon many worlds until they were accidentally woken up and decided they should reclaim the galaxy that was once theirs... But yeah, think Terminator meets Stargate, but they're undead... Something like that... That's barely scratching the surface of the setting and its lore >_

The setting for this one is a giant space-bound cathedral run by the Tech Priests of the Cult of the Omnissiah. Imagine Catholicism at its most Gothic- huge cathedrals, death imagery, skulls on everything, seeking heresy everywhere, violent arguments over dogmatic minutia. Now set it the far future, and substitute in machines and technology as an the object of worship. End up at fanatic cyborg priests who only sort of understand howthe machines they build and operate actually work, but they do know if they don't apply the sacred unguents to the joints on holy days while reciting the Catechism of Movement to the machine spirits then those spirits become angry and the machine seizes up. Like all Warhammer 40K, everything is dark and hyper-exaggerated and dumb in the most delightful way. The music embodies it perfectly.
@dagonofthedepths

a lot of the themes in 40k are really gothic and the mechanicus are like tech monks so the music was very fitting with the electronic pipe organ. Really though 40K is nuts at times. They have a tank with a pipe organ missile launcher on the back of it. I think that thing canonically functions too. You can play Flight of the Bumble Bee on it while firing missiles to tune which is so over the top it's hilarious to me.
