Warhammer Lore, The Runesmiths and Their Runes

It should be noted that, in the lore at least, despite their drop off in production Dwarfs still have far more magical equipment compared to other races aside from the elves. While there are plenty of random beastlords out there that have no magic items, and a good number of impirial generals or Ork warbosses take to feild with mundane equipment, or only one minor magic items, it's pretty much unheard of to face a dwarf Lord who is not equiped with multiple rune items. This is why Dwarf and Elf Lord's are often on par with a lot of the bigger scarier things that go bump in the night like chaos and vampire Lord's, even though at base they are not THAT far off from a human in physical ability.

Of course the dwarfs would turn magic into a programming language...

I can just imagine a fly farting and disrupting the rune just for the dwarf to start chucking stuff at the fly xD

In the warhammer roleplaying system 1st edition, runes of slaying are parts of the master rune class of runes. I.e. the most advanced runes in existence. It does make sense, though. In that system a rune of slaying will instantly slay anything it even inflicts a single wound on. Not even the most ancient powerful dragon is safe from a simple dagger. Also, you might want to look into Klauser's runes.

at 10:20 you mention "if a fly so much as farts in the vicinity" in ancient norse mythology, Loki, transformed into a fly, interrupted a dwarven master smith and therefore caused Mjolnir the hammer of thor to turn out not quite perfect... its said it would have been a full handled long sledge and not a hand hammer. however as the legend goes Thor was none the bit daunted and loved his weapon as both a hand melee piece and a throwing piece.

My theory on why runes are so hard to make is because of the dwarfs changing personality, I think the reason the Dwarves suffering in a lack of rune production after the War of the Beard and the Great Cataclysm is because they believe that they were too lenient with an inherently untrustworthy enemy that being the High Elves, the believe that leniency caused the ancestor gods to forsake them which the Dwarves believe caused the Great Cataclysm ,and when the Dwarves became a less lenient and more careful and consequently stagnant then the runes become more carefully made in nature.

Imagine if an elven lore master and a master rune Smith became friends became friends with an empire master engineer

I always wanted to do a War of Vengeance list, because the thought of being able to put three Master Runes on a single Bolt Thrower sounded like a lot of fun.

I've been going through warhammer fantasy pnp 2nd edition sourcebooks recently; in realms of sorcery in some of the parts describing the golden order they mention an in-universe theory they've formed about dwarfs' particular relation with winds of magic. Paraphrased, the logic goes like this: dwarfs covet gold most of any other race => gold is a natural draw of the wind of chamon => there are rumours of some renegade dwarfs far east consistently turning to stone when they dip themselves into using magic in a more direct way => dwarfs must be so saturated with the yellow wind, they cannot do anything with all the other winds. Thus the formation of their exceptionally rigid culture and it being reflected in their approach to all things, including their use of magic.

With runesmithing in mind and All of the bloody factions and "jobs"...i could see this becoming quite an awesome mmorpg, the big bulking wars, could infact simply be people Wanting to go to war or to try to capture the other faction's base of operation, course a game like that and make it an mmorpg would be ungodly difficult, but i could see it becoming probably one of the more played mmos, specificaly if for example you play as the Imperial Humans you would have a whole waterfall of choises to go for of what to become and what to work towards, could even make it more of an economic standing where the player of each faction whom is the leader, could set rules, laws and even the economic standing, again, ungodly difficult to make, but would be played but not even Warhammer fans but also ppl who simply never heard of it.

These guys make Techpriest Enginseers look positively open and honest. There are more than a few techpriests who jealously guard knowledge of how to make something like an astartes plasma cannon all their lives and only teach an apprentice how to do it when they’ve forgotten half the steps due to space Alzheimer’s but letting crucial secrets of technology die with them because they don’t respect anyone else? Not even they go that far. Runesmiths really are drama queens.

It would make sense to me that re-charging a rune would follow similar steps but entirely distinct from its creation. I bet some runes are actually cheaper to re-make wholesale than to recharge them this way!

Have there ever been rogue Dwarfs that rebelled against the slow methodical progression of weapons and runes? I imagine there had to of, in the thousands of years,been a dwarf that tried Rapidly developing something new. So said dwarf gets banished from his Kaarak,pinned as some mad scientist. So then he is either forced to becoming a hermit with his own personal lab,or rune forge,or travel amongst humans to work with there engineers

I did a small conversion to my Hero Quest Dwarf, gave him one of the Face Plates. And Whalaa.. A Rune Smith. Also have one of the Iron Claw Dwarfs, that resembles a Rune Smith. When facing a Magic Wielding Army, them Runes of Spell Breaking are handy. ;)

Hey Arch just wanted to say thank you for the Lodge Channel I just found it subscribed and it's amazing.

Now here's another question, is it possible for other races to learn and/or create runes (either from the dwarves or independently)? More importantly, is it possible to have a way of doing so without having every dwarf that hears about it NOT swear an eternal Grudge on you for doing so?

Glow globes: because even dwarfs made elephant lamps in rune-school. Golumns: the group project final was to do your runic limb, as if every group succeeded, you had a troop for the golumn army.

Would it be possible for the runesmiths to be ordered to pass their runes on,or not really? as I believe Thorgrim Ordered the Engineers guild tp produce the Gyrocopter and not subject it to hundreds of years of "testing'?

If I was a runesmith, and if it takes so much time to do 1 rune, I´d prefer some variation in my job. You know, I´d prefer to do new thing. But this can be detrimental as well because building the same stuff is easier, as practice improves skills. I imagine as well, as ending a perfect rune, the anxiety would grow exponentially, as an envy fellow runesmith would want to do some prank in another work. ;) This would be the ultimate troll.

How to get a master runesmith to build anothers' weapon/mass produce said weapon, "bet you can't build one better than this guy!" Proceed to watch the dwarf fly into a rage and build a better weapon with the same runes, take that weapon back to the first guy/next guy, rinse and repeat until you have a full armory of the same weapons(roughly). =profit.
