Hitting it on the head with one of my least favorite tropes of this 'genre.' "Oh, we've rewrote the setting so that it is multicultural and accepting at every level of society, but also at the same time minorities and women are still struggling against bigotry, just never in any real way unless it's a story beat for the bad guy."
@@KneeCapHill I think even normies realize this, albeit subconsciously. One of the many reasons the average person is starting to care less and less about media is because nothing is allowed to feel realistic. (because reality opposes the message) A medieval setting where every society is "diverse", women are empowered warriors (who beat up men by the dozen), no social expectations or limitations regarding sex or race exist, etc...? Yeah, that just doesn't work... Not for normal people, anyway. Now i AM admittedly extremely racist and sexist, but still. :) These things exist for a reason (very good reasons), and need to be part of fantasy as well if one wants it to feel even slightly realistic.
GW produced a book about Bretonnian Culture for the Warhammer fantasy roleplay. In the book they go over the detail of what happens if a Female attempts to be a knight. the Short version is: "The Lord sends the female on non stop valor quests until one of 2 things happens, She dies or she puts a dress back on an acts like a lady again" Getting sick of companies rewriting their lore so that everything is the current year.
And that make the story of a woman that KEEP being a knight so much more impactful ! This lady is a knight not because she had the governement pay for her education to then enter into a programs that make her a knight because they need more female representation all the while complaining that she is obviously not properly rewarded by the world and she should be given godhood since she deserved. NO this lady is a knight cause she was sent again and again into mission to the death and came back until the lord gave up and recognize her !
😂 and in that idea....you have a very interesting story for a small troop of female knights or a single epic female knight that is just as good in the field as other knights. Maybe she inspires others to follow her example and has to deal with the fact that many give up or come back so broken and battered they aren't the same.
@@TheFatalcrestyeah and her name is Repanse de Lyonesse who did exactly that since it's not surprising that you're doing French Medieval knights to have your Joan of arc figure
You know, I'd read a story about a woman who keeps on taking retarded valour quests and refuses to give up no matter how senseless it is. Hell have her team up with a slayer, it'd be fun to see a slayer be the voice of reason on a team.
Or "Arabi" just sounds too much like a certain area vaguely near Jerusalem. And, well, once you involve the word "Crusade," the only way to assuage the editors is to make it a horrible action.
@@danielbob2628"the crusades were monstruos", "the crusaders were evil", "it was a massacre without honor" stop your crying already, the arabs crusaded too, the quran demands constant crusade, and they took christian slaves. As a historian and a spaniard I am tired of the constant intent to portray medieval Europe in a bad light, yes they weren't perfect but neither were anyone else in that period. The crusades started with the noble purpose of defending the christians who lived/had lived in Jerusalem and other significant places for christianity, and like all war efforts it got twisted by men getting greedy, just like the muslims entering the iberian peninsula in the 8th century quickly started fighting amongst themselves over who gets the rights to land and over the peasants(another thing the quran demands, to give conquered lands to the warriors of faith, whoch is what almost every conquering army ever has done). The crusades were just as bad as every other religiously motivated military action, we should see them as such, leave them in the past and move on to stop current religiously motivated military actions(too many of those nowaday, not enough people pointing out that they are, and ironically also around Jerusalem)
The worst part is? That character is now untouchable. They will never fall to chaos, they will never do anything immoral, they will be pure paragons all the way till the company dies. @@SMT-ks8yp Technically there isn't, but Humanity is a gender-dimorphic species and female knights are extremely rare (to the point where the JOA equivalent is virtually the only known exception to 'all Knights are male') and in Bretonnia the LORDS decree who become Knights, so in the extremely rare cases where some Lady or female peasant get into ANY position to give it a try, they are sent on the same testing-work (quests) that male wanna-be-Knights are sent on - until they A) die, like so many of their male peers do, or B) quit and realize being a lady/female peasant is much, much better. "Ladys" are a VERY important part of Bretonnia...being spell casters...Lady of the Lake...Queens...wives etc...not knights... The worst part is transforming every rebel character from endearing to insufferable ! A woman trying to be a knight and either succeeding proving her heroic will or failing and getting back into the mold only to have a catastrophe push her back into warfare. Like imagine the story : A young lady in bretonnia close to moussillon that grow up with 5 older brother and read Repanse story. She is spoiled by her familly and is allowed to stay with her brother while they are drilled as to not be left alone. But during a higher lord visit her father is reprimanded and ordered to have her becoming a true lady . She is forced to participate in ball and learn ethiquette ect Where she meet a noblemen of unknown origin and while she is outside the castle the stranger being from mousillon and a vampire massacre her entire familly and resusciting the dead start pillaging the castle. She flee and get found by a knight errant that promptly "come to her rescue" and swear on his honnor to go slay the beast and take her back to the castle only for him to get massacred . She has now witness twice how her world and the world view that was imposed on her is fragile. She grab the sword and attack the vampire that don't react because who would expect a bretonnian woman to be able to fight especially one still in court robes . She goes back to the neighbouring castle to tell the news and everybody keep insisting that it was the knight errant that sacrified himself and slain the vampire. Now you could even have two thing : She take an armor and decide to act as a knight that made a vow of silence. She take a boat for the new world colony where the rules are by the harsh condition less oppresive. And the worst part is that this could as well not be the story but the back story of the character. I don't understand how they can't do something that simple
If i remember right, any male spellcaster basically gets kidnapped and sent off to where the lady of the lake is...probably killed? It's very one group does A and the other B.
@markjacobs3232 yup, you don't want to be a male spellcaster in Bretonnia or Kislev. Either off to the lady of the lake or off with your head in kislev... unless your parents can quietly and quickly ship you to the Empire colleges first.
The funniest part? Bretonnia is technologically backwater. The number of jokes that can be made about how "no wonder they lost, they made women their best warriors" is going to be hilarious.
You not notice the subtle nods to gender bending in the siege of terra? Dan abnett has always been inclusive in his writing. But done it in ways that suit the setting and story. But the ones from the SoT were just blaring virtue signals.
The Lady of the Lake was not a fan of rivals and for good/bad reasons. Her entire focus was making sure that the males lead, breed, and made better cannon fodder to ensure that her woods were safe of the raving lunatics outside. Seriously... You have female boss VAMPIRES who rules entire clans (and nations). You have the EMPIRE advancing to the modern age, the entire undead Not-Egypt... lots, and lots of places... why even the freezing bloody north with the mutant monsters has it's fair share of pricks, champions, and even Khorne getting annoyed his favorite Wifu got cheap shotted so he advanced her regardless. Yet they chose the knights in fancy armor... and then make it political... and forget that it is the FEMALE ELVES LIVING IN THE DAMN FOREST who are making sure men are in charge, suited up, got the right genes, and then work until one of them think's its a good idea to drag him to bed to have fun with before dumping him to the lady of the lake to give her blessings to make more disposable cannon fodder to keep the chaos lunatics up north away, the undead lunatics to the east away, and whatever lunatics come about that need a bit of 'divine inspiration' to move those cannon fodder knights into blocking their advance. It's like saying that the Skaven should get over their differences, not backstab each other in the back, and advance together as a unified species to bring good cheer, kindness, and the magic of friendship as they even present little colorful tattoos to show their special talents... Now on an unrelated note I must run from some overly large rats that took offense to that comment.
I'm baffled by the fact that they don't understand that without struggle a character isn't lovable and that their confortable creative-office life ISN'T interesting. But it's funny they picked THE nation that make every male a tool of an elven goddess to complain about the patriarchy and female oppression when the man are the one forced into a rough life for the benefit of the protected elven female ! Well, my major issue with this is that it's a dark fantasy setting. There is no problem with a girl boss character here and there within that type of fantasy, I mean even Conan had a few characters like Belit and Valeria. The problem is as illustrated you can't normalize it and act like it's something special at the same time. The intended vibe of Warhammer is that it's a dark setting, there were plenty of "equal opportunity" fantasy worlds and settings back when they started doing Warhammer's lore, part of what makes this one dark is a more pragmatic view of such things at the current tech level. To be entirely honest there would be little point to characters like Ulrika and her entire arc, ending with Vampirism, in the "Gotrek and Felix" stories, or why it's supposed to be such an unusual thing to have an entire "Maiden Guard" among The High Elves, or why "The Ice Queen Of Kislev" stands out for being one of the few women to have magical power on that level. If there were say female Pegasus Knights running around as relatively close as Bretonnia, it's unlikely Ulrika would have been such a big deal for doing the female adventurer thing so to speak. Otherwise, yes, people writing this stuff should learn something about the history on which it's based. People hear terms like "Islamaphobia" and then fail to realize how messed up that is and why it was created as a political construct. They were hardly victims over there. It constantly surprises me how little people learn in school nowadays as most people don't even know exactly what the "Knights Templar" or "Knights Hospitalar" were. They also tend to lump all the crusades into one thing. :)
@@АндрейНеугодников-м6е I'm not sure what your confused by to be honest, I thought my statement was pretty straightforward. Unless the idea is to see if I will write a long response? To play along though, I would say the motive for doing it was that they cannot have things that do not fit current socio-political ideology. Warhammer Fantasy is one of the few current fantasy worlds that is not massively politically correct, other game settings like Golarion and various D&D worlds have been being changed to be less "politically problematic", with the companies even saying so. Paizo removing all references to slavery from Golarion for example, so you don't even have evil slavers to fight. They have a literal "Infernal Empire" set up by their version of the devil that no longer practices slavery because apparently that's just too evil for the literal manifestation of all evil and depravity in the universe to tolerate. Eat souls? Torture for eternity? Conquer all of Reality? All of that is great, but forcing someone to work without paying them.... that's just wrong. I am guessing this is just Games Workshop bowing to the pressure to make their world conform to the same standards as everyone else's. This wouldn't even be notable, except it wasn't that way before. I think there is room for all kinds of things in fantasy. I mean you have all kinds of "modern morality in fantasyland" settings. Having historical and pseudo historical settings is fine, as are dark fantasy takes (like Warhammer) where the point of dark and disturbing things by today's standards is kind of the point. Part of my criticism is that one of the points of having settings that are very hostile to say women, or specific types of people, can make it interesting and meaningful when one of them breaks that mold within the setting. This seems to be trying to present this as both normalized and stunning and brave at the same time, which doesn't really work. Warhammer is not historical, but when it comes to mortal races like humans, women are generally not always treated well, which makes exceptions like the elves that have a literal "maiden guard", or the few women who achieve power a big deal. It also explains the temptations in some women selling out to chaos for super powers, or consenting to become a lesser vampire for the same reason and things like that. None of this works when you have a bunch of women running around in the highest orders of knighthood casually, and one of them apparently also getting away with talking smack to her feudal lord which should be a no, no, in that environment and not just for being a woman. Understand nobody is saying feudalism is exactly a good thing, but it does make sense within the setting and much like reality it's not something that just goes away quickly, or something where those in power let people run around casually undermining the system. This is long, but to put this into perspective. One of the defining fictional series of this world was the "Gotrek and Felix" series. Felix Jaeger is a noble who had the bright idea of doing something like that and was writing subversive poetry and talking smack about the government during protests. He get's thrown in jail rather brutally and only isn't decapitated because he's a noble, and is still likely to come to bad end but he meets a dwarf slayer (condemned criminal who is redeeming himself in the eyes of the gods by challenging badass monsters to death duels endlessly until he dies) in prison for drunkeness, and the two get sloshed together and he promises to write the take of Gotrek's eventual death as he used to kind of be a big deal. This arrangement has cross cultural ramification that gets Felix out of prison, but obligates him to follow Gotrek around while he looks for no-win scenarios to throw himself at, in order to have the most epic death ever. The gimmick is though that no matter how insane the situation Gotrek goes after, he always manages to win, as he is ridonkulously tough before even getting into a weapon you later learn is divinely powered. Felix who was a decent swordsman becomes increasingly better as he follows Gotrek, and sort of a warrior-hero in his own right. At any rate to get to the point of this ramble, while travelling Felix winds up meeting this renegade noble daughter called Ulrika who does the warrior-rogue thing and keeps crossing paths with them. There is a three way romance between him, her, and this mage guy, that you always think will result in some kind of horrible betrayal but never does because they are all good people. In the end Ulrika winds up in a bad place both socially and physically (it's been a while, I don't remember all the details) and winds up giving herself to one of the Van Carstein vampire and turned into an undead, the point being that some women do this and become "bride of Dracula" types just to have some kind of power. For Ulrika though, who was already a massive exception the results are... rather impressive. This leads to her parting ways with the others, as Gotrek is sort of honor bound to murder things like her just for existing (and we learn in one of the books even a Vampire Lord has a real hard time going toe to toe with this guy... and yeah he's depicted as having all the RPG celerity type stuff. Gotrek is just that stronk, which is kind of the point of him being an epic hero... the slayer who just flat out will not die as he intentionally pokes the strongest things in the world in the nose and invites them to try and kill him). The point I'm getting at here is this whole world already exists, and there are tons of books just in that series. If you just had tons of women running around in high orders of Knighthood, the whole schtick behind characters like Ulrika would make no sense. Nor would characters like The Ice Queen Of Kislev (as they would not be a crazy thing), or the one female Elector Count (I forget her name) who is supposed to be a big thing because it's not something women generally do in the human cultures. If you had tons of female "Pegasus Knights" in the country next door, it wouldn't be any big deal.
We can't evict now, the first place these parasites infest is Hiring/HR, so no matter how many writers we boot, they will hire more and more woke writers. You know what would of realistically happened to said female knight in a feudalistic society. she would of been shamed for disobeying her lord by giving the guards wood for fire, they [the guards] would of been flogged for making fires from said wood and disobeying the lord and then her questioning of societal demands and questioning the lord would of got her executed for treason. this is the real truth and the best part is it would have nothing to do with her being a woman and her being entirely incompetent by knighthood standards and societal standards of a medieval society.
I mean a realistic feudal society wouldn't have used fire to keep warm on the walls. Fired were dificult to start and useually kept indoors where their hear could be trapped. You would wear warm clothes and rotate men inside and outside.

As someone, who actively did armoured full contact fights for almos a decade and participated in the world championship two times, let me tell you : you do not engange multuiple enemies at once, fight them effectively and are still able to carry a grown man afterwards. A man won´t be able to that for any serious amount of time after a serious fight and a women will definitely not be able to do that.
Isn't it a general problem with combat in fantasy novels? It's generally written by people with near-zero knowledge of the subject. IMO nowadays practising/being knowledgable of HEMA/getting a HEMA consultant should be mandatory for a serious fantasy writer.
@fuzonzord9301 True, it definitely is. Though, when it comes to fighting in full armour and fighting in an environment with multiple opponents, you want to have someone who does HMB or IMCF. HEMA fighters often do not fight in real armour and the fencing mostly only covers 1 vs. 1 scenarios.
I agree that you must focus on one foe but keep alert to others. Attacking many foes at once leaves open to being surrounded. There are videos of women being in shield wall collision, they are sent flying and injured. The men stood there. Almost like women can fight but must use their natural traits to their advantage.
I remember reading from an old White Dwarf about a female High Elf that disguised as male and was riding a dragon, and who fought the Dwarves - and got tragically butchered by them. I'd guess from that that it wasn't a norm.
There was a few races with already existing female units, mostly the elven ones. Beyond the multiple problems in the book, there are two issues that just strike at me. First is the sledgehammer approach. If you want a woman kicking all kinds of ass with a blade in the warhammer's universe, you can. That's what elves are for. Talks crap to everyone every day of the week, never ever hears the word "no", does whatever she wants, and has abilities beyond mortal men is basically the definition of an elf. You can create such a character that is outside the social norms and the hierarchical structure. You just need a tiny bit of care and finesse. The second problem is the destruction of the IP. Bretonnia is supposed to be crap, intolerant and backwater. There is no sign language in Bretonnia because if you're disabled, you die. There is no progressivism in Bretonnia because the lords are very happy being in power and the populace is made up of famished, scared, and superstitious peasants. And there may or may not be outside forces keeping Bretonnia in such a state. The "good" guys in Warhammer are supposed to still be living in hellholes. Where people are wicked, ugly and wary of strangers. The "good" guys are still very very grey, that's the point. That's the universe. That's the IP. If you turn Warhammer into discount Rings of Power, you just destroy the thing people like to replace it with something nobody wants nor buy. Yet again, that kind of behaviour is right on brand for GW.
Thanks Arch for saving me and a friend some money by making this video... Also when the "progressive Left" starts about things being fair I am reminded of this quote: “If some people had wings and others didn't, and the government wanted to enforce "fairness," soon no one would have wings. Because wings cannot be redistributed, they can only be broken. Likewise, a government edict cannot make people smarter or more capable, but it can impede the growth of those with the potential. Wouldn't it be fair if, in the name of equality, we scar the beautiful, cripple the athletes, lobotomize the scientists, blind the artists, and sever the hands of the musicians? Why not?” I am just going to go read David Gemmells "Legend" again. Good Luck.
You speak of Gemmel, if you're looking for good, unwoke sci-fantasy give Gene Wolfe: Book of The New Sun. It is amazing. Has very strong Catholic undertones if you know what you're looking for but don't worry, it's not a religious/preaching book. It's dark as fuck if you're paying attention and I'm pretty sure GW stole from this for 40k (especially sisters of battle - you will see if you read it all)
I tried that once, liked the ideas but the writing style didn't grab me. Might give it another try someday but not right now. Thanks for the suggestion though. @@Tom-sd9jb
What is Wrong with Wrath and Glory? i dit not see any Lore unfriendly things, no female Space marines no Male Sisters of Battle. The only thing i saw is that Humans can be as good as Space Marines because of the Tier system. and that is already some what Realistic when you read some of the new Books, like a Sister onehitting a Space Marine with a Melta. and for the Humans the Kasrkin and Lucifer Blacks can also do it so where is the Problem? Imperial Assassins can even beat Custodes who are just Humans with a lot of Implants, Training and Bioenhancment
I'm DM'ing wrath and glory right now and I don't really get the comparison. W&G Isn't perfect but generally stays within the bound of accepted canon. This just sounds like echo chamber garbage.
@@CcReap3r Assassins could kill an Custodian, atleast in a Sneaky way, not the eversor he would totaly Die, but the Lore changes so mutch it is Insane, in One Book they Die like Flys in the Next they are like Anime Main Characters, but still The Balance is not Far of. and Beating a Custodian in an Open Fight sure Imposible by Beating i ment defeating a Custodian in other ways. But still elite units can kill Space Marines. i guess the Only Point of Wrath and Glory is the Game Balance. but i like it, you can Play a Space Marine with Humans Without making the others useless, and you still feal like a Space Marine, because you Deal more Damage and Kill more People then the other non Space Marines. and all have there Special Areas they are good at, Space Marines are just Walking tanks and Damage Dealers
@@CcReap3r and that is True, in a 1v1 in an open Battle No one Can beat them, unless maby it is a Solitair or Primarch or named Character, i know. still lore wise something like Space Marines are not as OP as they once where Lore wise, when you read the Books, most of the Time, the Only Reason why Space Marines are so OP is because anyone else uses Bad Weapons, as soon something better is on the Table or Bigger they die, something like Plasma or Lascanons, heavy weapons. and Wrath and Glory does that Realy well. but the Power of SM anyway Depends on the Writer, in one book they are OP AF and in the next they dont, the same with Necrons and other factions. The other thing About Wrath and Glory some People dislike is that it is not as Deadly as Other TTRPGs, and that is also True. but hey that is what Imperium Maledictum and the older TTRPGs are for. i Realy Like W&G we have a Tier 5 Campaign where i Play a Custodian from a Homebrew rule set we found online
@@АндрейНеугодников-м6е thats a good question. why do they have inclusivity in brettonia? arnt they the most socially backwards realm of man in the old world?
I remember some early promo images about state troops. One was black, other asian and the last one white. I used to think it just some kind of fever dream because I can't find the picture now. But I guess even Old World cant escape current world politics.
11:42 "When do we see misters of the lake?" I'm actually making backup "mansel" miniatures to replace my damsels if I come up against any female knight armies to meme on them... haven't found a man in dress mini yet, so probably going to headswap a 3d print
Already did, know the new Space Marine shooter coming out? Yeah, the senior writer is a "Kill all men" feminazi. GW is on its way to "progressive" deathrow
@@otaviolobo7989 Exactly cause no one cares about her...the 40k population is still like 99% male playerbase...just as it always has been. My wife plays too but can't stand this pandering crap. Onepagerules looks better and better.
@@ryanmitchell4044 Naa ... They did ? Oh i can feel the shadow of "the emperor was actually a black woman ! After all nobody saw him for 10 000 years so nobody know "
I HIGHLY recommend reading the bretonnia omnibus (around 20$ for over 700 pages)!! Excellent novel made by an author that truly loves and pays respect the lore! Very dark story that highlights the good and bad of bretonnian society, without having the need to insert modern day politics into its narrative! FOR THE LADY!!!
I tried it and thought it was okay but the ridiculous level of peasant-hate really took me out of it. Half of the time it felt like I was reading The Turner Diaries, just with minorities replaced with peasants. Of course, it was based on the crap 6th edition lore for Bretonnia, and not the _good_ 5th edition lore, so that's what you get...
@@joshwenn989 its important to note that bretonnian high society has been indoctrinated into having a superior complex and "hating the filthy every-day peasantry." Every race in the warhammer fantasy world is flawed, even the "good guys." I simply viewed this hatred of their poor subjects as a method in which the author showed this. To each their own!
He he, just imagine a feudal society sending its women of fertile age to battle. For how many generations would it survive if we add the horrible infant mortality in those times?
Anyone who has ever carried a person knows its not easy. The requirements for modern female soldiers are lower because they typically cannot do such a thing. Seems like a waste of time to debate feudalism when you have literal monsters from hell wanting to bust into the world and devour you, or mutated rat monsters coming up from the sewers to eat you. Or fucking skeletons trying to rip you apart! I cannot fathom in warhammer, fantasy or 40k, that someone highly competent who is on your side would ever be marginalized when they're good at their job. Sounds like they just made a mary sue who complains about being not being priviliged enough.
In armour weighting 30kg with a weapon and wood on her back as well. Women in our world still heaven't figured out how to stop crying when a fight does break out and the men have to pull weapons, I'm so sick of this female empowerment rubbish when they aren't even trying to make it reasonable.
I had to double check this, because I woke up with a hangover. Had a great gaming night with friends. And now I'm paying the price for a good time. Oba I hate this century.
Oh nice, first GW go scorched earth on fantasy without a single stuff given to the fandom, then they kind of give it back to us with a heavy dose of salt into our still open wounds with this bucket of tripe.
GW one leg in ESG, another in pissing off the consumer. Do they not learn from Marvel or so many other shows? Did they get any ESG credits for this? It is Rey level bad.
Casual warhammer fan here but i enjoy the setting and the lore for what it is. I completely understand and support the hardcore fans for wanting to gatekeep the hobby to preserve what makes it warhammer.
Can’t wait for the new Orcs and Goblins novel featuring new orc Warboss Borr Rizz Jawnsunn and Goblin Chieftan Ritshi Shoonak, attacking innocent refugees fleeing the chaos wastes
I bought all the omnibuses for Warhammer Chronicles I could get my hands on. I was hoping to expand that collection with Old World, but it looks like my money will stay safe in the wallet :^) I guess the GW CEO has to get comfortable with the idea of not getting it.
As an aside, "Pegasus Knights" in at least some of the worlds within the Nintendo Strategy game series Fire Emblem are exclusively female, IIRC because pegasus don't like men. One wonders if a FE fan found their way into writing for GW...
i started getting into Warhammer 40k about 2-3 years ago, then i realized what kind of company games workshop is and i haven't given them another penny since
