I enjoy making the tutorials, thank you for watching. I’ve bought exactly the same, just going to take it one brigade at a time, keeping the rest in the boxes, slowly build playable forces rather than look at the piles of plastic.

I just started on my first Waterloo sprues. I can testify personally that indeed, priming/undercoating the strips in black followed by a white Zenithal is 100% the way to go! It outlines all the details perfectly, and creates instant shadow anythere you don't paint. So there's no worry about any white halos interfering between the borders of details to touch up later on. Especially at this small of a scale, you always, always want the recesses of the models to be black and dark so that different colors of details are separeated. And with the Contrasts I'm getting the sprues painted up in probably 1/4 the time it would take with traditional paints. I took a slightly different path than Stew, only because I was too lazy to get my airbrush set up, lol. Instead I spray primed them in black with a rattle can, and then I manually dry brushed the white over the strips to get the Zenithal. But obviously using an airbrush is waaaaay faster and more efficient.
@MiniatureRealms

Drybrushing is a great way to go, I do so after white with the airbrush. I can imagine your process works very well.

Another great paint job. Just a heads up for British cavalry - they had brown horse leathers. It was the French who had all black
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Thank you Mike. 😊 The black leather was deliberate in the end, on these models when I paint them brown they just didn’t show up against the brown horses, it’s very hard to get enough of a tonal difference with silly amounts of effort, especially with hundreds to paint 😂. Maybe one of the the things with the method I’m using I guess. Brown leather does darken loads when it’s gets old, I’ve got a brown leather belt that’s very dark now, I’d imagine with horses sweat and dirt from campaign it looking dark might not be too far off being realistic.
@mikebersiks3280
@mikebersiks3280 2 года назад
@@MiniatureRealms I agree, very tough to make them stand out when the whole regiment is mounted on Bays or Dark Brown horses as per most of the British dragoons. You might want to use that dark brown contrast colour for the leather when you do the British Household cav which were all mounted on black horses. You have the same problem with French heavies. I'm painting up the Grenadiers a Cheval which are also meant to be mounted on black horses which means that I either paint the horses in a dark grey or German Camo Dark Brown with a black wash over it and with the leather/ manes / tails in a flat black.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
That’s probably what I’ll do, the one black horse I did do I used Contrast Cygor Brown (which is the darkest one). That will have to be my method throughout I think.

Beautiful painting. I am fascinated by the use of the 'contrast' paints. I have never used them before but what you do is just fantastic. I have an extensive collection of Vallejo paints and just finished 3800 ACW epic Union and Confederate figs, but now I am intrigued by these contrast paints. Thanks for continuing to share your expertise!

Great tutorial again. At last, I may have a use for Apothecary White, probably the least useful of the Contrasts I have bought up to now, for me anyway. I've never enjoyed painting horses but with Contrasts I enjoy it much more. What I do find though, just as the blue we will use for French infantry needs to be lighter on 15mm figures to avoid it looking black, the horse colours also have to go up a couple of notches to avoid being too dark. I also hate highlighting horses and I find using lighter shades negates the need for much highlighting. For that reason I tend to use Snakebite Leather, Aggaros Dunes and Gore Grunta Fur for the various bays and chestnut horses, even mixed together. I've used Wildwood but definitely needs to be diluted and / or mixed IMO otherwise it's way too dark. I use Basillicanum Grey for the the darker grey sometimes on the larger AB 18mm but Apothecary may be better at this scale.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Thank you 😊 Yeah most of the darker warm colours (the reds and browns) have very strong pigment and need to be thinned for a lot of applications.

Awesome tutorial as always! Stew, I wanted to bring something to your attention in case you were not aware. Warlord just released some new bundle packages which seem to focus on pure infantry and cavalry bundles without having to go all in with the terrain and other stuff. For $440.00 US, they're doing the British with 7 brigade boxes of infantry, also with 4 brigade boxes of cavalry, and finally 2 extra cavalry boxes for free. Also at $440.00 US, they're doing the French, the new bundle is "D'erlons 1st Corps", which has ELEVEN brigade infantry boxes, and 2 cavalry boxes for free. It's cool that they are allowing people to buy bundles of just pure miniatures!

I use all different kinds of sources if I’m honest, Osprey, internet searches, they do vary so who knows what’s right 😂 Mont Saint Jean is good, but I’ve no idea if that’s 100% accurate either, it’s just another internet source (albeit an excellent one). As long as it’s mostly right I don’t lose any sleep over it, especially not at this scale with these miniatures.

@@MiniatureRealms Probably an imaginary small engagement, like Quatre Bras, but to the west on the Nivelles road. Wellington was worried that Napoleon would pressure his right flank west of Hougoumont when Napoleon was actually trying to split Wellington from Blucher on Wellington’s left. To force Wellington to commit troops west of Hougoumont Napoleon sends some of Prince Jerome’s 6th Division and Pire’s 2nd Cavalry along the Nievelles road as Ney advances on Quatre Bras. Jerome’s force is blocked at Nievelles by Cooke’s 1st Division (Guards), some of Alten’s 3rd Div and Kerrison’s 7th Hussars marching east to get to Waterloo. 8 Infantry, 3 guns and 3 cavalry battalions a side. Well that’s the plan.

Much appreciated tutorial again Stu, everything is covered superbly on your channel... Brushes, brush care, basing etc.. So helpful One question I do have is that I wear reading glasses and have a visor type magnifier from another hobby, would you recommend these or the magnifier on a stand type affair for painting miniatures?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
Thank you for the kind words, glad you’re enjoying the channel, I really enjoy making the videos and it’s lovely to hear when people like it. I’ve occasionally use visor type and free standing magnifiers, I don’t get on 100% with either of the really, but I think it’s probably a personal thing in terms of which is best. My eyesight has always been very good, but I paint a lot, and now in my mid 40s they sometimes get a bit tired, so magnification helps the odd time. I’m probably not quite at the point where I need them, so maybe that’s why they both felt a bit alien to me. I found the glasses slightly disorienting when looking away from the mini and putting paint on my brush, the desk one maybe slightly better, but it’s still odd. Sorry not much help 😂

Do you recommend varnishing them and the buildings?
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
I would never ‘not’ recommend varnishing gaming miniatures, but I don’t like to very often, I don’t like how it changes or flattens colours. However with some miniatures you really must to prevent damage, metal miniatures for sure, and miniatures where Contrast paint in the main medium. In this case I often varnish after base coats. It then highlight on top, it adds protection, but saves some wear and tear. Metallic paints suffer most from colour change after varnishing, so I try to varnish before I do them. Having said all that I haven’t varnished ANY of my plastic Epic models, I just handle them with care by the bases. Sorry for the long and not necessarily straight answer 😂

@@MiniatureRealms Thank you! So much! Would you do base coast,varnish,strong tone and then highlights? Also any recommendations for browns. I have the basic army painter brown and I have to do so many coats on everything.
@MiniatureRealms
@MiniatureRealms 2 года назад
I’d probably varnish before strong tone. It’s really important not to go on too thick with the varnish though, I use an airbrush for this, I’d worry about a can making it too thick. Vallejo do a really nice Brown & Leather set, so do Scale 75 (but harder to use if you’re not used to them).
