Warm Audio WA47jr vs Audio Technica AT2020 - Vocals Too Thin? Try This!

Today I am answering a question for my viewer ‪@zachpitt9249‬ and anyone else wanting fuller sounding vocal recordings. Assuming we are sticking with condenser microphones, using a microphone with a K47 style capsule can lead to fuller sounding vocals. Try one out for yourself and see if it works for you.

@subtonic24
@subtonic24 Год назад
Hey you're welcome man! Glad you found my video helpful! I use to own the NT1 so I am very familiar with it. By far one of my least favorite mics i've ever used/owned. You well get more low end, but the high end is very grainy sounding and harsh once you start processing it (kinda like the AT2020), the mids feel weak so it doesn't sound as full as it could, and for a mic that is suppose to be nearly flat, it is also really sibilant which is not good. Would not recommend.
@zachpitt9249
@zachpitt9249 Год назад
@@subtonic24 thanks man can i clarify again did you mean rode nt1 color black version with small bump on top end is grainy when boosted not the nt1-a silver because i saw reviews saying nt1-a is harsher. but i didn't know that nt1 have grainy sibilant sound when in post cause there are 2 variation of this mic?
@subtonic24
@subtonic24 Год назад
@@zachpitt9249 Yup I'm talking about the black NT1. That top end is grainy once you start boosting it to modern music standards. And it's very sibilant before you even start boosting it! The NT1 is slightly better than the NT1-A but not by much from my experience.

@subtonic24

@@zachpitt9249 After some processing, you can definitely get there! The top end of the WA47jr is smooth enough to get into this territory without being grainy or harsh. No idea which mic he used but he records with the Sony C800g, ELA M 251, U47, and U67, so it's possible. At the end of the day tho, the engineer is the one who made his vocals sound like this.

Im interested in getting the WA47jr. THe problem is that its really mid forward and i'm affraid it will bring out the nasality and room rumble out.
@subtonic24
@subtonic24 Год назад
K47 style capsules are known for being more mid forward than other capsules. This is to help it cut through a busy mix in a different way since it has a more rolled off top end. The mid forwardness can be dealt with using EQ and mic placement, but if you already have a really nasal voice or a really aggressive mid forward voice, then K47 style mics might not be the best option for you as they will exaggerate those characteristics more.

Is the wa 47 fet asignificantly different enough to upgrade from the wa47jr? I like having a mix that doesn’t need a separate power supply, don’t know if I should get the wa47 and keep the 47jr. Or just have a wa47 and wa47 fet

I don't think the 47fet is drastically different from the 47jr, and you lose out on the versatility of multiple polar patterns. I personally wouldn't look at it.

The WA47 will have some differences from the WA47jr due to the tube circuit and transformer, but the differences do not always mean it is an "upgrade". You'll have to listen for yourself and decide if you like the sound and if the differences justify the cost difference.

how would the warm audio mic do in a untreated room ?
@subtonic24
@subtonic24 4 месяца назад
Not very well just like almost all condenser mics that exist, even the expensive ones. Treat your room (doesn't have to be expensive) or grab a dynamic mic. The dynamic mic option will help a bit but it is not an absolute fix to an untreated room. Hope this helps!

I love the TLM103. It will definitely sound more full than the AT2020 and a lot of other mics. It has a big bass response, even more than the U87. It does have a very smooth but bright top end. If that is the sound you want and you're willing to pay for it, then go for it! ✌🏾

As far as sound goes, if you want brighter but grainy sound, AT4040. If you want a smoother but darker sound, WA47jr. WA47jr can be EQ'd brighter if needed and won't sound grainy. As far as what you get for the $299 price tag, WA47jr is better. You get more features and accessories for your money.

hey man i found out that wa47 tube are more rounder than 47jr can i make it to sound like tube wa 47 with some equalization to wa 47jr?
@subtonic24
@subtonic24 Год назад
The WA47 has a tube circuit inside, a transformer, and a bigger body size. All of those things contribute to the sound of the mic and cannot be replicated by EQ'ing the 47jr. The difference you hear is the transformerless circuit of the 47jr vs the tube & transformer circuit of the WA47 (both mics have the exact same capsule, but the circuits inside are different). If you want that more "round" 47 sound, you have to get the WA47, or any other tube U47 clone.
