Huge Glidden fan here! Saw him win at multiple national events. Didn't matter what the stakes were, he always had time for the fans. He came to one of our local dealers once for a meet and greet so I took my young son, who thought Bob walked on water, and asked if I could take a picture of him with Bob, who, instead of having my son stand on the floor next to him, said, "I have a better idea", and picked him up so he could stand on the desk next to him for a much better picture. What a thrill for us, and proof of what a great guy Bob was!

Bob Glidden was one of the most humble guys I ever met at a dragstrip. He was a hard worker, but he also took time for the fans and didn`t bitch about it like some drivers do. He was a true racer`s racer. May he rest in peace.

Bob was a very humble person and cared about the fans. I met him in the pits at the SpringNats in 1991 I believe, and he signed his autograph with the word "Thanks" with his signature and then told me "Thanks".

Pretty revealing when WJ included himself in every answer and clearly had not given any thought about Bob's accomplishments. The two posters of himself on his office wall speak volumes. I was a teenager when we went to the 78 Work Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway. I had a little camera and didn't interrupt Bob between rounds but I took a few photos of him. He noticed and looked right at me so it was a better photo. Dude was a wolf in the fire suit but he was pure class. Loved that boxy Fairmont.

I had the pleasure of meeting Bob Glidden once at the Winter Nationals in the early '80s while I was cruising the pits. I was 14 years old and completely star struck, it was frickin' BOB GLIDDEN after all. He shook my hand, said hello and I just froze. What a great guy and a credit to the sport of drag racing. RIP Mr. Glidden, thanks for the memories.

I went up to Bob as a kid in 1995 at Rockingham and got an autograph from him. Then told him he was my dad's favorite. He asked me to point him out. He walked over and they talked for an hour in the Pits. While I continued on getting more autographs from other drivers. I was 8yrs old at that time. I should've listened to them talk.

Bob Glidden is & will always be my favorite drag racer. I can remember many times going back into the pits & even if they were really busy trying to get ready for the next round, Bob would alway take a minute or two & talk to you. I never was a Warren Johnson fan & you can tell from the interview, he begrudgingly offered compliments about Bob. In my opinion, Warren isn't even close as far as what Bob did for the sport.

@HighlanderNorth1 3 года назад
🤔 I was a Ford fan, and looking back on some of these early 80s pro-stock nationals, it's more obvious than ever just how much of an underdog Ford was(and even Mopar to a lesser extent), because practically EVERY OTHER pro-stock racer was driving a Camaro! It wasn't just Lee Sheppard, it was pretty much everyone! I guess you could say it was compensation for GM's complete withdrawal from factory sponsored pro drag racing in the 60s, when it was arguably most relevant to car sales. As a Ford guy, I was pretty much always in the minority, because there were ALWAYS far more small block Chevy powered cars at the local Friday night grudge matches at Cecil County Dragway in the mid to late 80s. I was sick-to-death of 1968-74 Novas, and '68-'72 Chevelles back then, just as I later became sick-to-death of Fox body Mustang based racers from the late 80s through the late 2000s.

THE NHRA (Another division of GM) MADE THE 351 CLEVELAND FORD'S CARRY 250LBS MORE WEIGHT AND THE FORD'S STILL KILLED THEM. WHEN WARREN JOHNSON BEAT GLIDDEN, GLIDDEN WAS CARRYING 250LBS MORE WEIGHT AND I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THEY WERE ALLOWING THE CHEVY'S TO REMOVE MORE WEIGHT EVEN MAKING THE HANDICAPP ON FORDS EVEN WORSE WHICH WAS THE ONLY WAY WARREN JOHNSON WAS ABLE TO WIN. IT WAS ALL BASED ON CHEATING. IF THE PROFESSOR WARREN JOHNSON CLAIMS TO HAVE EVEN BEATEN GLIDDEN HE'S A DREAMER. EVEN AFTER CROSSING THE FINISH LINE WARREN JOHNSON STILL LOST. THIS CHEATING BY THE NHRA HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS SINCE THE AMA BAN OF 1957. THE FORD WINDSOR 289ci WAS SO HIGHLY GOVERNED BY THE NHRA BACK IN THE 1960'S. THE NHRA TO DISCOURAGE ANYBODY FROM RUNNING IT, WOULD CHANGE THE RULES BOOK ON THE SMALL BLOCK FORD LIKE THE WEATHER CHANGED IN KANSAS. IF YOU WON AN EVENT. THE NEXT TIME YOU ENTERED THE RULES ON THE 289ci WERE CHANGED. THIS IS THE REASON YOU COULDN'T GET RACE PARTS FOR A FORD AND WHEN THEY WERE AVAILABLE THEY WERE 3-5 TIMES MORE MONEY. NOBODY BEING NEITHER FORD NOR THE AFTERMARKET WOULD PRODUCE RACE PARTS FOR A MOTOR THAT THE NHRA WOULD BE BANNED TO KEEP FORD FROM WINNING. IF THEY BANNED IT THE MANUFACTURER WOULD GET STUCK WITH A WAREHOUSE FULL OF SCRAP METAL. THIS IS THE REASON YOU COULDN'T GET RACE PARTS FOR A FORD. IT TOOK DECADES FOR SOMEONE TO PRODUCE A PERFORMANCE HEAD FOR A FORD WHEN TRICK FLOW PRODUCED ONE IN THE LATE 1980'S BECAUSE OF THE IMMENSE POPULARITY OF THE 5.0 MUSTANG. THAT'S RIDICULOUS, WHILE THEY HAVE BEEN PRODUCING RACE HEADS FOR THE CHEVY MOTORS FOR YEARS. SO GM HAS THE NHRA MANDATED THE 500ci RULE SO GM CAN BUILD A NEW MOTOR "THE DRCE" - DRAG RACE COMPETITION ENGINE LED BY WARREN JOHNSON. WHAT GM AND WARREN JOHNSON DID IS TAKE AN OLDSMOBLE BLOCK AND STUFF A CAM AND ROTATING ASSEMBLY LIKE A THANKSGIVING DAY TURKEY INTO IT. THEN WARREN JOHNSON HAD A PAIR OF FORD CLEVELAND STYLE HEADS MADE FOR IT. SO WHAT CHEVY/GM HAS BEEN WINNING WITH SINCE 1983 TO DATE, IS A BIG CUBE FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. THIS IS WHY FORD DOESN'T PUT ANY MONEY INTO PROSTOCK BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY A FORD POWERED VENUE WHERE THE CLEVELAND STILL LIVES ON LABELED AS A CHEVY MOTOR. AROUND 15 YEARS AGO MY CHEVY RACING BUDDY'S ASKED WARREN JOHNSON AT THE NATIONALS WHY THERE AREN'T THERE ANY FORD'S IN PROSTOCK. HE TURNED AROUND AND SAID FORD JUST CAN'T COMPETE. People call WJ an azzhole because they don't understand drag racing from the primitive business aspect. There has always been "WJ"s in championship drag racing even in the sportsman ranks not to mention athletic sports alike. I would suspect guys would be calling me a butthole as well because I would have had an ethical business approach to my racing operation when I'm at the races as well. I'm not there for likes, I'm at work!...Talk to me when I'm off the clock. They (NHRA) don't just hand you those No1's & 2's, to place on your windows, You have to earn them and If you're gonna keep those corporate companies names on the sides of those doors, You do what you have to do. You can't talk to NFL players during the game nor most other sports but some think just because of the closeness in the pits between the "players" in drag racing and spectators, That gives them Carte Blanche to mingle with the owners/drivers just so they can flex to their buddies ["Yeah, I was talkin' to Bob Glidden about"......]U know!...But when that spectator/fan is ignored, Its that infamous momma's boy feelings butthurt moment and that personality is forever scorned...That's what has happened in WJ's instance. He REALLY IS a great guy but you couldn't talk to him when he was "at work" especially when he was going rounds but those who knew him knew that. Pat Musi was another pro stock'er with that "I'm busy right now" mentality taken out of context by some...I know Musi personally - He's not like that except he will engage in [harmless] schitt-talking on occasion. Grumpy Jenkins was the worst to try to get a word out of edgewise but he demonstrated the same applied work ethic intensity. Today's drag racing don't allow for you to have "access" to pro racers in the pit area like back in the day due to the way they now "pit" along with the baracade tape/rope-off. I wasn't a Bob Glidden fan but I wasn't a Bruce Allen fan either (Just Reher&Morrison) but I didn't "dislike" Glidden. My all time hero in drag racing will always be Don Prudhomme ! Forgive me for the long convo....Haven't been actively involved in drag racing since I bailed some 20 odd years ago now...I miss the good ol days of drag racing...Today's fans???...I can only feel kinda sorry for them, despite today's performance enhancements, They missed out on the excitement factor of it. I'd bet the bank anyone commenting on here doesn't have an ounce of the knowledge or work ethic these two Racers had to put cars in the winners circle.

"He had a hard work ethic....as I did too". Me me me me. He accused glidden of cheating...well, he was. They ALL were. He just did it way better and it pissed Warren off. I was a machinist and builder for JMS Racing engines in SoCal, and we had all our tricks for cheating without being caught. We ended up building the engines for more than half the teams in Top Sportsman and Winston West. Of course, the one who played golf and drank with my boss always won.

I know im gonna catch a lotta flack over this but here it goes. Im from Fairfield Illinois home of the Wayne County Speed Shop and the Dodge Boys. But in my junior high days the Speed Shop hadn't quite hit the scene yet. Not in a Dodge yet anyway. There were several good drivers and teams out there at the time. But the two I remember the most as a teenager were Gildden and W.J. battling it out. Even then I cringed at the thought of W.J. making it past the first round. His arrogance and im smarter than EVERYONE remember hes the "Professor". I dont think he could ever reconcile in that big head of his how some dumb "hick" could ever outsmart him. I wasnt a Ford fan but I was a Bob Glidden fan. And then I dont even want to open up the can of worms about Scott Geoffrion RIP and the Doge team. To be honest i dont think he even likes himself that much. Hes just trying to convince himself and everyone else how great he is.

Bob was a diehard Ford guy, but I’m confused as to why the small block Chevy cylinder head on the work bench? Also the pic of Bob and crew working on the Mustang, and the valve covers had spacers added to them. Either he was experimenting with tall valve geometry or he covered up a SBC with those Ford valve covers. Back in the day, Ford small block technology was lacking.

Lacking, you've obviously never seen a cleveland head have you? Glidden did his own engines - Ford engines. Now he was going to have to find a way to build a General Motors equivalent. “Obviously I didn’t have a good baseline or I might have done better than I did,” Glidden said. Glidden paints a picture of failure but in reality, he was still able to coax a 9.00 elapsed time at 148 miles per hour from a 373-inch motor that he’d never run before, much less tested. He was first alternate and the DNQ marked the first of his career. “I didn’t keep that car long at all,” Glidden said. “In fact I sold it, the next week to John Lingenfelter and he won all kinds of races with it.”

Terry Morrison, THE NHRA (Another division of GM) MADE THE 351 CLEVELAND FORD'S CARRY 250LBS MORE WEIGHT AND THE FORD'S STILL KILLED THEM. THE NHRA KNEW THE DEATH OF THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY WAS INEVITABLE IN RACING ESPECIALLY IN PROSTOCK WHEN IT EVENTUALLY WOULD BECOME TOTALLY FORD CLEVELAND POWERED. HE'S GOT ONE SET OF BIG BALLS TO SAY THAT WHEN HE WAS THE ONE WHO CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO PUT A PAIR OF FORD CLEVELAND HEADS ON GM OLDS BLOCK STUFFED WITH A CHEVY BB ROTATING ASSEMBLY. THIS IS WHAT THE NHRA IS ALL ABOUT CHEATING TO KEEP CHEVY IN THE WINNERS CIRCLE.

@@mikeskidmore6754 THE AMOUNT OF STUPIDITY YOU MANAGED TO FIT INTO 1 PARAGRAPH IS ASTOUNDING. THE LS IS A FORD COPY FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. NOT 1 DESIGN ASPECT OF THE OLD SMALL BLOCK CHEVY LIVES IN THE LS. THE LS IS COMPLETELY FORD IN DESIGN. SECOND IT IS NOT FORD GUYS PUTTING LS MOTORS INTO FORD MUSTANGS. IT IS CHEVY GUYS USING FORD FOXBODIES BECAUSE THEY ARE A BETTER PLATFORM AND BETTER LOOKING THEN THOSE UGLY IROC CAMARO'S THAT NOT EVEN A MEXICAN DISHWASHER WOULD BE CAUGHT DRIVING IN. EVERYTHING IN RACING TODAY THAT CHEVY USES IS ALL FORD. 1. THE CHEVY NASCAR RO7 IS A FORD CLEVELAND KNOCK OFF. IT EVEN HAS THE DISTRIBUTOR IN THE FRONT. 2. YOUR CHEVY PROSTOCK DRCE ENGINE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A BIG CUBE FORD CLEVELAND ENGINE. THIS IS THE REASON FORD DOESN'T GET INVOLVED IN PROSTOCK BECAUSE IT IS ALREADY A FORD POWERED VENUE. 3. ALL YOUR SYMETRICAL HEAD CHEVY RACING BIG BLOCK MOTORS ARE ONCE AGAIN FORD CLEVELAND MOTORS. THIS IS ALSO WHAT THE MANUFACTURER HIDES FROM THEIR CHEVY CLIENTEL. 5. YOUR 1989 CHEVY ZR1 DOHC ENGINE WAS DESIGNED BY FORD. FORD OWNED LOTUS AND SOLD 70% OF THEIR INTERESTS TO GM. FORD KEPT CONTROL OF 30% OF THE COMPANY WHICH WAS THE ENGINES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT DIVISION. EVERYTHING CHEVY USES IN RACING TODAY IS ALL FORD BASED. @@mikeskidmore6754 THE REASON GLIDDEN WON IN A PLYMOUTH IN 1980 WAS DUE TO THE FACT THAT PLYMOUTH HAD THE WEIGHT ADVANTAGE LIKE THE SMALL BLOCK CHEVY DID BEING 250LBS LIGHTER.
