Zevon once stated that this was based on a true story. He and his manager were partying in Mexico, when the "party" decided to take to the road and it looked liked it was "about to hit the fan." Zevon's manager feigned a phone call: "Send lawyers." Zevon jumped in: "And guns... and money." The part about hiding in Honduras might be referring to O Henry, the author. In 1894, he'd embezzled $5000 ($150k+ in today's dollars) from the bank he was working at and had fled to Honduras to avoid prosecution. He was eventually caught when he returned to Texas to be with his terminally ill wife.

I got to see Warren Zevon. I can even say I knew him when he was living in Philadelphia ("Nita in the Morning" days...) I can't say I was his friend. He was a huge fan of my dog and used go out of his way in Rittenhouse Square to say hello and pat him. A few years after that he played solo at the Chestnut Cabaret, was playing this very song (on the 12 string), stopped in the middle, look me right in the face and said: "Hey... Will you get me a beer?" I did.

Why is Warren Zevon so ignored, underrated, even unknown? To me he is probably the most inventive, versatile and creative musicians of my lifetime - an amazing songwriter and a brilliant performer. Who knows where he would have gone had he not died so tragically young? He was incapable of producing anything that was not original. Honour to his memory.

Have I told this story before? Saw Warren in Austin at Club Foot with my future ex-wife in 1982. Still have the ticket stub on my law office wall. Solo show. Saw him for the second time in Austin in 1989, after future ex and I had separated. Saw him for the last time in 1993 in Austin with our son, age 8, on my shoulders. Warren came back out to do an encore. We were 10 feet from the stage, outdoors venue, Liberty Lunch. "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy, can he play "Excited Boy"??!! Warren heard him, looked up from his guitar, grinned, and immediately launched into a roaring, soaring "Excitable Boy". That moment will live with me till the day I die. My son, now 30, and a big Zevon fan, won't forget it, either.

It is Frank Zappa. Don't know what that's about, but Donny Osmond is on the other piano, too. Must have been a benefit, or just a jam.

Props on pronouncing Johannesberg properly. ("joe", not "yo" ) Warren got it wrong on the original recording buy once he found out always sang it properly after that.

I live in LA and got drunk with him several times that last year he started drinking again. No songs came of it, but there was poetry.

Interesting how most preforms speed up their songs when performing live, where as in this instance Zevon slows down

Don't know if you'll see this post, but you have an excellent sense of time. I timed it. The studio recording is 94 beats per minute. This is 90.

One of the best songwriters of his generation, he wasn’t that great of a live performer but he could do it, Detox Mansion!

This song is composed of grit and granite. A base layer of necessities.

What energy! Out flipping standing. Never saw this before. The lead guitar player looks like the love-child of Frank Zappa and Groucho Marx. Love Zevon and his music to end of the universe. Thanks for posting this, buddy.

Guitar player was Zeke Zirngebel. Drummer was Marty Stinger. Toured with both during the 70s in another band (“Purlee”). Two of the best musicians around. Crispy
