Actually for the gas helicopter thing I may have an explanation. The one you rode was a little bird, open helicopter. The one used for escaping is a Blackhawk (I think) which can close it doors in turn sealing off the gas allowing you to escape.

There is an actual explanation about the gas mask one. The filters get to polluted and the mask will fail but not that quick. Fun fact: this tech is also used next to highways to decrease co2
