Bioshock 2 is a game I've always looked back on and felt it was subject to a lot of unfair criticism's at launch. Yes, it is more of Bioshock. So, what? I loved Bioshock and Bioshock 2 is more of that. But, it has been 10 years at this point since I last played it so it's time to put the game through the nostalgia test. Today I'll be going through the games development, story, gameplay and the DLC Minerva's Den to see if Bioshock 2 is worth playing today.

Bioshock 2 was a surprisingly difficult game for me to script. I truly adore this game which I'm sure you've come to realise now so enough about me! What are your thoughts on Bioshock 2? Were you disappointed with the game? Never played it? WHY NOT!?

I remember having a bad taste in my mouth when I first played this when it came out. And couldn't even bring myself to finish it. But years later, when the remastered collection came out. And I got to playing it again, fully with the mindset of thinking I'd have to slog through it and it'd be terrible, by all accounts I thought I was going to come out of the experience if anything, hating it even more. But surprisingly, I ended up absolutely loving it from about the second level onwards once I'd kind of gotten over my own biases and stopped fighting with the game to try and confirm all my previous thoughts on it, instead of admitting I was wrong. The atmosphere is incredible. The level design is excellent. The hacking was improved significantly. The camera system was made much more interesting. The characters and choices reflect so well on the themes of the first game. The radio logs are just as interesting and engaging and memorable if not more in a lot of cases than the first game. It goes so much heavier into the Big Daddy/Little Sister relationship that I absolutely adore. But most importantly, it was actually what made me truly love Rapture. It really opens out the city in a way I feel they were a bit limited in doing with the first. You see so much more of the sea, and the whole degraded water logged, rusted aesthetic of the city is done with so much meticulous and well crafted detail, it was impossible not to feel utterly immersed the entire time. I did such a 180 on how I felt about this game, that it is currently my favourite game of all time.

I think that's a really important way of thinking! It's why I love revisiting games from my past so much, good or bad memories and going in with a new outlook. The hype is gone, let me look at the game on it's own merits and I'm with you in regards to Bioshock 2. Whilst I didn't remember disliking the game I didn't love it as much as I did this time around. Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den are special games and not only are they real highlights in the Bioshock series but they are also for me in my top favourite games as well.

Glad to see this game getting sone love. I have a 50/50 feeling on this game but dont believe it deserves any of its hate. I loved my experience with it. Eleanor Lamb was one of my favorite characters in the original Rapture saga of the series. I think the reason it doesn't get as much love is because it doesnt have the same setup and plot twist reveal as the first game did.
@MayorHairBear
@MayorHairBear 4 года назад
I couldn't agree more, the lack of a significant plot twist/ mind blowing reveal for some reason made people believe the story wasn't as good just for that reason. It is a really compelling story and world expansion of Rapture I was excited to show my love for the game here :)

I think it is the best game in the series, while i acknowledge that bioshock 1 had the best story, i just think that bioshock 2 is an overall better videogame. The gameplay loop, exploration and audio diaries were fantastic. Great video, i am glad i saw you on reddit.

I personally think that each Bioshock game stands out in their own way. Yeah, Bioshock 1 often times considered the best of all, it has the story that left a bigger impact on people, and it's the one that introduced us to the world of Rapture. Bioshock 2, on the other hand, improves the gameplay of the first game, adding and fixing things. Plus, the fact you play as a Big Daddy makes it unique. And Bioshock Infinite changes the gameplay a lot, but it tells a more complex story, presenting us with a different world.
@MayorHairBear

@@MayorHairBear Yeah, although I am just playing Bioshock for the first time. Well, I've tried it many times on the pc, but... It's not my preferred platform to play, plus the remastered version of the game is a mess. I got the game on Switch, it's been quite fun. I also got Bioshock Infinite, and I quite enjoyed it. Maybe I'll pick up Bioshock 2 when it goes on sale, it seems like I have to try it out.

Great video man I just finished all of Bioshock for the first time, absolutely amazing games, instantly one of my all time favorites.. While I also think 1 just has the better story (of course), Bioshock 2 is also my favorite in the series, the gameplay is so ridiciously fun.. Infinite is quite different for sure and in terms of gameplay definetely a step back, but they are honestly all great great games.. Really liked your points, very high quality indeed, i'll stick around for more!

Just played the entire series recently and I wanted to drown out any outside influences and I'm glad I did. This game was incredible and everything in this video pretty much echoes my experience with it. The bond between protector and gatherer was one of the most intriguing aspects of the first game for me and for them to explore it further, and better yet, have us experience that bond first hand I thought, was brilliant, and a logical step after the first game as this was a more personal story. It once again poses the true meaning of free will to the player but this time based on love instead of obedience. In a way, I'm glad I played it all so late. It means I didn't have to deal with all the hype and biases. I played 3 incredible games, and no one can change my mind about that
@MayorHairBear
@MayorHairBear 2 года назад
Playing a series or even just a single game after all the hype and bias is out of mind is a great way to finally play games! Bioshock is one of those series that because the original was so incredible hype and anticipation was a factor with 2 and Infinite and that's why I think some are so mixed on the series but I'm with you 100% and think the series is just incredible full stop.

I really enjoyed your video and setup. You have a small channel but that seems to help your honest and sincere personality and take on BioShock 2. If I can try to give some constructive criticism of your retrospective it would be to better understand and acknowledge the faults the game has. You seem to boil it down to, "it's more of the first game" and brush that aside when there are some real faults. One thing for me is how there's an enormous power spike mid-game that makes it way too easy even on the toughest difficulty. Also saying the story doesn't have twists like the first is only a symptom of the main problem that there is zero Plot progression for 70% of the game between Atlantic Express and Fontaine Futuristics. Every level is just stalling with some backstory too. And Big Sister is challenging for the first fight and gets an interesting backstory but ultimately goes nowhere and is left as a shadow of what is was earlier in development. These are only three examples of problems myself and others have despite enjoying the game. Acknowledging them and accepting or rebutting them would've made for a better video in my opinion.
@MayorHairBear
@MayorHairBear 4 года назад
I'm always appreciative of legit criticism, not just hating on an opinion. You make a lot of good points and I'll try and take these notes into my future videos so thank you :)
@Kelis98

2 has tons of story development form Atlantic Express to Fontaine’s futuristics. You learn more about characters and backstory which is how the plot progresses.
@redraptorwrites6778
@redraptorwrites6778 4 года назад
@@Kelis98 You learn about the backstory but your character's goals never change. It's just extremely convenient for the player that so many of the major figures from you past are also blocking your way to Eleanor. It never feels like you're making any progress because all you're doing is learning backstory and judging people in your way. It's basically one really long and tedious 2nd act. Compare that to the first game where your goals changed as you obtained them. Act 1 is reaching Atlas's family but when they die Act 2 comes in where you kill Ryan. Once that's done you're in Act 3 where you cure yourself and kill Fontaine. You made progress. Here you have the same exact goal from beginning to end while being stalled constantly
