Was Catching 'Em All in Pokemon Even Worth it? 

Remember when catching 151 seemed nigh on impossible back in 2000? Imagine what we'd be like if we were told that, in 2022, Pokemon would still be going and there'd be more than a thousand to catch.

I think the beauty of pokemon comes in the fact that transferring is a thing. The fact that someone could have the same zigzagoon from gen 3 moved all the way up to the current generations (Minus cut pokemon of course, but even then they would just have to hop a generation.) is amazing. So while catching every single one for the diploma is useless, the ability to move them up means its kindof like an RPG where you could bring back legacy characters, which is fun to me.

I love the Destiny Deoxys scene in which Ash and Brock went to get hot dogs and Pikachu zapped the machine into spewing out a bunch of them for Ash and Brock to catch and Brock exclaimed, "Whoa! Gotta catch 'em all!"

⚠Clearing a few things up: -For Gen 4 in this video I am talking about catching all 493 in this game minus mythicals aka 100% the game. For that the reward was a diploma. -In Black and White 2, You only need to have SEEN all of the Unova Pokemon to go to the Nature Preserve. (The rewards for catching 'em all are the Oval Charm and Shiny Charm rewards.) -Also, I've been uploading on and off for awhile now but for some reason people aren't seeing my other uploads and lots of people are commenting like I haven't uploaded in years. The main thing that always sucked was exclusive version pokemon and being unable to catch them. Pokemon Black and White 2 is when catching them all became worth it with the shiny charm Also, gen 4 had a reward for completing your regional pokedex. The entire post game

It should also be noted that in Legends: Arceus, if you do catch 'em all, you'll get to fight Arceus himself.

"Getto daze" is the true slogan, since it refers to getting Pokémon from different ways, not just catching them in the wild. Getting the Charms are great rewards. The 2D Pokémon games would allow all around 1,008 Pokémon to get and use, but it will be tedious in trying to get them all.

I caught every Kanto Pokémon in Firered, and also made a Living Dex of them. I took a picture of my GBSP screen, printed it, and framed it on my wall. It's still one of the greatest accomplishments I've ever done in a video game.

I made it a point to catch them all in Yellow and Gold. Still did my best to at least catch all regionals in later games, excluding mythicals unless I got lucky. It just felt fulfilling to me. Sure there's nothing for it sometimes, but it felt satisfactory regardless.

Back in 2021, I did attempt to catch them all in Red Blue and Yellow. It was a lengthy task but I was very proud of my accomplishment. Not just a pokedex but a living dex too.

I decided to catch them all before scarlet and violet came out. All 905 pokemon from gen 1 through to 8 and the reward was definitely worth it. An original coloured magearna through pokemon home.

I caught em all, my whole life, every game, and GameFreak were like, "We didn't mean catch em all, we meant catch just some of em" which is bs. Feels like betrayal tbh

One thing I will give Pokémon is that the game was made around the idea of trading and making connections with people and I’m sure the games have done that a ton of times since gen 1 but the first time I ever completed the regional dex was in violet because the game was just that fun and I think the fact that the newer games are compatible with home just makes catching them all a lot easier although it still takes a lot of effort to do so

ive been watching your channel for a long time now. I'm 19 just got out of high school last year and man time fly's faster than i thought it would. hope you are doing well!

The closest I ever came to completing a Pokedex was in Platinum; it was about 2009. I had access to all relevant versions at the time and a friend to trade with. I was very close, and then some asshole stole my DS with the game cartridge in it.

Yeah, it became more worth it as time went on and that’s great! I finished it first in Y, especially thanks to transferring. That feature is an Arceus-send (literally!) and also really great for holding onto Pokémon you love a lot.

The earliest I think catching em all in was worth it was Colosseum was the only game where it was worth catching all the Pokémon in the game where you get a Ho-Oh amd in Japan you could also get Celebi. Gen 1 was probably the most fun I had with Catching em all though.

i completed the oras dex, caught all 721 back in 2018! but i remember thinking i would get more than just a poster and a pat on the back, it felt like it was kind of a waste of time

Got all 151 Pokemons including Mew with a cheat device as a child on my Pokemon Yellow Version, traded Pokemon for weeks with a friend that had blue and red cartridge and we were both underwhelmed of the "Reward" back the days!

The Nature Preserve from BW2 can be accessed just by having seen all non-mythical Pokémon in the regional dex, so I got my chance there!

The first time I caught them all was in Scarlet and Violet.

Funnily enough, in Brasil the slogan was an ironic mixture of the unused and the used one, as here it's "Catch 'em all... If you can!" I find this one more interesting as it retains the excitement of Gotta Catch 'em All while still presenting as a challange.

I don’t know about the old days, but in scarlet and violet, the time I spent catching and trading for the 400 Pokémon in the dex, kinda had mixed feelings, it felt amazing to get my first ever shiny charm but the actual task of catching them all wasn’t really that fun, maybe if I didn’t search up locations of Pokémon I didn’t have it would’ve been funner, but in general just going out and quick balling everything wasn’t all that fun

I just think it was a ploy to make people play the game longer its only like a 4 hour game if you picked bulbasaur. It doesn't matter if it has worth but I do like the fact you could print the diploma like I could and back then that was enough for a good kids game.

Been on and off working for a Gen IV catch ‘em all. I have Platinum, Heartgold, Ruby, Leafgreen, Diamond and Pearl and I think I STILL might need Emerald or Soul Silver for a few Pokémon (and that’s not even including the mythical/event Pokémon)

I'd say that in XY, ORAS, Sword and Shield (if you like Dynamax Adventures, and only the base game Dex) and Scarlet and Violet, completing the Pokedex for the shiny charm is worth it if you like shiny hunting. I've currently completed the Dex in Let's Go Eevee, Shield (only base Dex) and Violet (7 days at launch of catching them all, definitely would recommend in Scarlet and Violet, and there are online trade codes, so no worries there) Definitely want to work on the dex in Alpha Sapphire though, as gen 6 is the pinnacle of shiny hunting, hunts aren't to hard, but have decent odds, and aren't to easy, you still gotta put some work in. And if anyone has the Eon Ticket and connects online, everyone gets it, so hopefully someone will do it soon ;-;

It depends subjectively on how you like to play Pokemon whether or not it is viewed as "worth it." Some players just want to have a fun time and are indifferent or uncaring about the entire Pokemon roster being trimmed. Others love the challenge that completing a Living Dex (or even just registering all entries in the National Dex) offers. Then you have all the competitive fans who vary on the matter, but I digress. Another consideration is whether it had to be cut in the first place. The goal was optional in most of the games, so its presence doesn't affect players who don't care about it (with a small exception that I'll get to in a bit.) The argument of needing to collect the games to trade them all _might_ have been a concern if Gen IV onwards didn't introduce the GTS service. The excuse that it's too much work for the devs and they wanted that time for better animations has been doubly disproven, both by fans documenting how much of the animations are recycled, and by Game Freak ever since the DLC brings back returning Pokemon. (Yes, you don't need the DLC to obtain them, but the point stands that those Pokemon were partly used to market DLC sales.) Data size concerns aren't an issue either as not only do the Pokemon constitute a small fraction of data, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet actually manages have a smaller size than Sword and Shield with the same roster number. The only semi-legitimate criticisms I've seen that hold any weight against NatDex's return is saturating the competitive roster, and the Shiny Charm being locked behind NatDex completion. Both of which are relatively simple fixes; Make two online battle modes, one for NatDex and the other for your Regional roster, and lower the requirements for the Shiny Charm. Preferably by completing the local dex only. Ultimately, there are going to be fans who feel excluded from the franchise because of Dexit, and with no good consumer reason to exclude the NatDex, there is an inherent worth to catching them all, even if not all players do so.

Almost 7 years later and I'm still trying to catch 'em all in the regional dex for Pokémon Emerald to obtain the Johto starters, which has been made a lot more difficult thanks to the price gouge that happened to the older Pokémon games in 2020 and 2021. But hey, at least in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, you only need to *SEE* every Pokémon (minus most mythicals, Ho-Oh, and Lugia) in the Pokédex (regional and national) to get a crappy diploma!

The first time I ever caught them all was in Pokémon X. I worked really hard on that. Then, I completed The Alola Dex in Pokémon Sun and was surprised to find out there was no National Dex. Sure, all of the Pokémon were available in the game, but they didn’t have Pokédex entries. Then, I completed my Pokédex on the Pokémon Yellow 3DS virtual console edition, and then again in Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu. I also completed the regional Dex in Pokémon Sword, and the National Dex in Pokémon Home.

I caught em all in gen 5. Unforgettable agony. XD 10/10 would do again! Plan to do it on virtual console Yellow too.

I’ve played leafgreen all the way to violet and In gen 9 I think I will finally attempt to catch all the pokemon in the game

Since 2018 I've played through every generation and completed the national dex by moving the mons I'd already caught up to the next generation where possible. Having a complete living dex in Pokémon home is kind of a reward in of itself, but I now feel locked into doing this for every generation forever

Exactly, it's the journey. I was the kind of player that always tried to complete the national dex just to see all the new sprites, moves...just because it was fun

Legends Arceus actually took a bit of a step back. You get the Shiny Charm if you catch every Pokemon and get their dex entries to 10 points, which is fine, but there's no reward for completing the Pokedex in full. Perfecting a dex entry increases your shiny odds for that Pokemon, but that's about it.

While I personally never was able to do it, my brother did get all 151 on Blue Version growing up, and helped trade me a Mew after he used his Game Shark to get one for both of us. Best I managed was 127 in Red, before I got up to 91 caught in Silver and then my battery died in the game and lost the save file. I always do make an effort to get as many as I can, but never have I finished my PokeDex in any of the games

At least nowadays, if you complete the Pokédex, you get better prizes like a Shiny Charm or something.

My older brother made an attempt at getting ‘’em all!’ Back in the days of gen. 2, but quickly discovered that it wasn’t too easy of a task, at least not back then. I got the idea of trying it during gen. 3, i went to him for advise, and all he said was something along the lines of ‘don’t bother, kiddo. If you want to be a REALLY good trainer, pick some of ur favorites and just TRAIN. having them all is overrated.’

At one point, I actually did catch them all, on my copy of Pokémon Blue. Unfortunately, I dropped it, and a piece of it broke off. When I started the game again, the Game Boy couldn't read it anymore😢. However, I bought a copy of Pokémon Ultra Moon, a while back. Not only did I capture every single Pokémon, I also managed to capture the ones that are in Ultra space, including all of the legendaries! Plus on top of that, I managed to get various Pokémon that you can only encounter once, and I was able to collect the whole entire family of every Pokémon, in the game! This might sound weird, but for the first time in my life, this is the one thing, I'll be able to look back on, and know that, all my hard work and efforts, finally paid off! To me, it was worth it!😁✌🏾

Personally, I never cared about completing a pokedex in the earlier generations, because I didn't own a Gameboy and had to play on an emulator. Back in the 3DS days though, I started building up a living dex. Currently, the only Pokemon I'm missing are the gen 5-7 mythics, the ones from SwSh DLC, Violet exclusives, the whole Quaxly line and the Walking Wake. It's quite helpful whenever you're starting a new playthrough, just transfer all of them and grab a shiny charm in the early game.

I remember as a kid I knew one boy from CCD (Sunday school) who showed off that he caught all 150 Pokemon. We were all so disappointed to see all you got was the little diploma.

As a Gen 1 veteran, only in the original games, but since Gen 2 onwards, not in my opinion, because by the current games, there's far too many Pokemon to look for and the reward is not good enough at all. It's nothing but a bragging right. Not worth that kind of trouble.

Since you asked, I did caught them all in White, minus the Myrhicals that were unobtainable that was. I remember I had a Hayley Mew, Pktopia Raichu, Magmortar, Electivire, and a Ranger Manaphy as my top members in that collection. I remember I bought Emerald and FireRed for the otherwise unobtainable legendaries and I still have these games in their original packages. Dirt cheap how they were back then I am glad I don't have to buy them again.

I completed the gen 1 and 2 pokedex's when I was a kid. Had all 6 games, 2 gameboy colors, and the link cable. Completed Ruby's pokedex with help from a friend that had Sapphire. Didnt care to complete gens 4 or 5 as I was an adult with less time getting back into the series just before X and Y and I wasn't buying 2 3DSs. I tried gen 6 kinda but gave up as online trading was toxic back then. I completed Ultra Suns pokedex and since then I've completed every pokedex since even my Home dex.

I recently got a 3ds and decided to complete the pokédex while playing all games from gen 3 trough gen 7 so i can have a living dex at the end but boy this challenge is almost inpossible on how hard it is. First of all there are pokémons that you just cannot catch normally in game, thoose pokémons are trapped on event that are not avaliable anymore, the only way to get them is to cheat or use a virtual event made by fans like the ones in gen 4 and 5. I love pokémon and i love the idea of completing a dex, i know this has to be a challeging task but it end up being impossible to catch them all in some of the generations all because some pokémons are trapped in a event that can't be acessed anymore.

You got an amnesia psyduck in gen 1 if you used your completed game on pokemon stadium and used all 151 pokemon to earn a trophy in the respective battle leagues

I remember being so mad after buying two Gameboys a cable red blue and yellow. People at my school said then I would be able to catch mew.

Caught them all in PLA & Violet, it feels worth it for that Shiny Charm, but man it feels like Ability Patches are the only things worth booting up my game for.

I completed Yellow's Pokedex twice. The first time by trading with my Pokemon Blue and Silver. The second time via Mew/Ditto/Special Stat glitch.

Pokemon Black is great because there are only 151 mons like the original games so it's worth it and not too unachievable, especially considering there are quite a bit of fully evolved ones you can directly catch in moving grass

I got a living dex in bw1 and it took me 11 hours to trade back and forth with bw2 for the shiny charm. I also had a living dex in gen 6 and by then bank made ot super easy to move mons around. So, i got the charm that way in oras. Gen 7 onwards, you only needed to catch all in the regional dex for the charm. It is way easier to the charm since then on top of wondertrade and online communities.

So glad the shiny charm was added as a reward for catching them all

Sword and Shield was the first gen I caught them all including dlc. In the Dlc catching them all would earn one two really cool crowns one for the completion of the crown tundra and one for the Isle of armor. They also included a mark charm I believe. They also included diplomas. The base game gave a diploma and a shiny charm. One of the elements I disliked the most were trade evolutions. It was too complicated. Give a very specific item to a pokemon then one would have to hope that the partner they traded with was honest enough to give the evolved pokemon back and not just run off with it. In the most recent releases I noticed that trade evolutions are in raids and in the wild which makes trading to obtain certain pokemon evolution forms less needed. Pokemon legends had items that granted evolution without the need for trading and gave access to all pokemon though that was because it was not split into two color themed titles.

in Gen 1 there were going to be 190 Pokémon but some of them got saved for Gen 2 so they were replaced by the Pokémon Missingno.

Now in order to catch them all you have to pay for DLC.

seems like with each new game that comes out it’s easier and easier to catch them all so for the past 2 gens i’ve completed the dex in every game. not because i’m super excited to do so but just because the new games lack post game content that’s fun and engaging so there’s nothing better to do.

In gen 3 regional Pokédex was (at the time) because you got to get the johto starters from prof oak If you’re into shiny haxorus Then it’s worth it in black/white 2

With the Virtual console of Blue version it took forever but got all 151, beat the Champion, became said Champion 🏆 and now there is nothing left to do

I caught enough for a living dex on the run up to Sun and Moon with my sibling then updated it with those Pokemon before losing interest when the games made the jump to the switch and the online stuff took a nose dive in quality.
