I would have answered right away, "Don King was great for boxing 100%". Yes, he wasn't great for the boxers, but he was great for the sport and the fans. Moreover, Don King is a big part of why boxers today can get paid so much, all the while not giving fans the fights they want to see.

So we not gonna talk about AL Haymon and how his fighters are making millions on free TV.

No white promoters liked Don King back in the day and now. Don king not only was the best promoter back then, but he also controlled the heavyweight division. Every fight had to come through him. He outsmarted the white promoters. He also had access to capital that other promoters couldn’t get to. He paid boxers the most out of any promoters. He paid fighters the biggest amount than anyone in the history of boxing during his run. He made Mike Tyson over 300 million and Tyson still ended up broke. A lot of the black fighters would go to Don ahead of fights and ask to borrow money and they thought that Don wouldn’t deduct from their purse after there upcoming fight was over. The black fighters thought they didn’t have to pay back that advance that Don cut them for the material things that they wanted. So that results in the fighters saying “Don robbed me” . A lot of those black guys who didn’t have any financial literacy all ended up broke. However, the black and Mexican guys who did understand business all made it out wealthy. Roberto Duran refers to Don King as his Father because all of the good he did for him and the amount of money he made for him. The white promoters will always hate Don because he understood how Boxing was conducted and most importantly understood America “Only in America” as he always says. You think the white promoters weren’t robbing the black fighters? Haha! Don’t be crazy. You notice how Teddy Atlas doesn’t even mention Al Haymon when they talk about current promoters? It’s clear as day that Al Haymon is the best promoter in boxing today and he’s making people like Mayweather , Berto, etc. the most money ever. But Al Haymon isn’t flashy and doesn’t do interviews so the people will never know. He likes to call the shots without attention. But Al Haymon is black and the white promoters and white media don’t like that for some reason.

From what I understand of King, he would promise a top 10 guy say 80 grand for a fight, when the going rate was maybe 50 grand. (Back in the day when that was decent money). Then his guy wins the fight, King comes up with a bundle of cash, says "Great Fight" and hands him 20k. If the guy counted it then and there King told him he would get the rest later. A number of guys would threaten to beat him up, and then King might cough up a couple of thousand or even hundred thousand depending on how big the debt was. But generally they would get tired of chasing him around and accept some kind of settlement in cash which if they were lucky was what they would have gotten with another promoter, but for the low level guys often less.

I don’t get why Don king gets all the hate when you have Dana white being more of a crook than king . Don king was considered a crook by taking 40 to 50 percent of the total revenue. He maid multi millionaires out of his fighters He was putting on the best fights in the world in the 80’s and 90’s . Why blame Don king if he paid Tyson 300 million dollars and Tyson blows it . Dana white and the UFC take 90 to 95% of the total revenue and everybody loves Dana white . Maybe his last name has a lot to do with it.

I worked with and for Don King. He’s charming and fun to be around. I worked on creating a DAZN style online streaming channel back in 2007/8. If you watch the Jones v Trinidad fight, you can see the donkingnetwork.tv logo on the ring. That was me.

He was a powerful King in that industry no white man of any kind could go over or get over Don King. I don't know what he had over these other power white men cause it wasn't a fight unless DKing was on paperwork.

Rocky was a story that was stolen off of James Braddock believe that was his name work down at the Docks talked slow sense of humor. Also the Bayonne bleeder Wepner ,Sylvester Stallone even admitted it was a combination of those two Rocky. I know it's all subject but he mentioned Rocky wasn't about real Fighters and it was.

I can show you many, many times where Don king showed up promoting one fighter and when that fighter lost, he walked out of the ring with the other fighter. Don King uses people and drains their money and then moves on to the next big thing. He's as heartless as they come!

He made his fighters rich and famous - he was king at his role.
