That chap giving the first timers briefing was so wonderful - made me laugh out loud! Hats off to both for running up the hill both times - there's absolutely no way I could do that!
As a former competitive XC/trail runner this is my local Parkrun and I love it. Nearly every runner up front pushes too hard on the hill then relaxes for a rest at the top. The key to a fast time is to do exactly the opposite. An extra 50% effort on the hill will see you running maybe 1 min/mile faster, but there same effort on the following gentle downhill will see you running 2 min/mile faster. Can't tell you how many times half a dozen runners have gone past me blowing very hard up that hill, them I've flown past them within 100m of the top. Happens every time. For a quick time you need to maximise the area under the graph. The exact same thing used to happen in XC MTB races when I did those. I think it just feels more natural to push hard when there's more resistance due to gravity. But if you train yourself to do the opposite you'll be quicker overall.
Yes Jesmond Dene gets a few honourable mentions, it is a tough one! You’ll have to let us know what you think of Flatts, the hill may be tough but it’s loads of fun! 🙌🏻
The hilliest parkrun I've done is Joe Creason in Louisville, Kentucky. Much like this course, there's a really big hill that you run up and down twice. The uphill is gradual and the downhill is super steep. It was such a super fun course!
I bet that Park run course would be beautiful in the fall. It's hard for a camera to show how hilly it was but judging by everyone's efforts it definitely looked hard. I've had some hilly 5k over the years. Some of the more memorable re aces including 3000 to 4000 feet of climbing over the course of a half marathon. I also live at 4500 feet elevation so that adds up too. I love going back to lower altitude for racing. Thanks for taking me along on your run.
@@those2runnersI wouldn't say I am good at running hills - I just accept them and try to get up as quickly as possible while not burning out. A lot of our races here where I live are downhill courses. There are a bunch of races here sporting 1000 - 3000 foot drops over the course of a race, which makes for some blazing times.
Well done! Looks a lovely course apart from the hill! My hardest parkrun was Bevendean Down (near Brighton). One of the smallest parkruns by attendance (funny that!) but one of the toughest!
Thanks Clive! It was tough but really fun! A trail course is always fun and challenging in a different way! 😊 ooh that sounds like a good one, will have to have a look! Thanks for watching 😃
My local has a fairly large but short-ish hill, have gotten really used to it. I do notice how visitors always comment on and hate it though. I prefer this than a longer less steep hill. I think sometimes the mental side is more difficult than the physical, once you get over that it's much easier.
I love this comment! Totally agree too, the short hills are sometimes the most brutal, but they’re over quickly so that’s the best part! Which is your local parkrun? Thank you for watching 😃
Brilliant video and definitely the one we were all waiting for! 😂 Amazed you both managed to run the hill both times - I manage about 20 metres on lap 1 before walking! But one of my favourite parkruns and pleased you enjoyed it.
Haha thank you Andy! You did well to walk 20 metres up it, most were walking before the hill 😂 We really enjoyed it thanks! Such a great course and lovely team! Thanks for watching - we’re glad you enjoyed it 😃
The best bit is, it's called Flatts😂 Belvoir castle, near to where I live is in the 700's for difficulty and is my favourite, essentially 1 lap, the last climb is probably 1k starting with a steady incline which gradually gets steeper. Cracking setting, though, and all-round good vibe.
@@those2runners getting there thanks. Cast comes off next Wednesday, then I am in a protective boot for 6 weeks, but I can start to weight bear. Thankfully I have not been in to much pain
What a great video. Flatts Lane is brutal But great for the fitness & stamina and as the runners correctly mentioned the team at Flatts lane are great. Got my 100th parkrun coming up on Saturday at Albert. From there on I’m going to run a lot more at Flatts. If it takes all day it takes all day lol.
Congratulations on reaching 100, what a fabulous milestone to hit 👏🙌🏻 it is brutal, you’re right, but with the right mindset it can be a really fun challenge! And exactly, it doesn’t matter how long it takes - it’s the getting it done that counts! Enjoy your 100 celebrations 🎉😊
Fab video, made me giggle. That bulldog had to be the highlight! He was quite blatantly loving life, and no way was he moving out of the way for you hahahaha. Chris, you absolute legend running up that hill. I hate them and would have needed a defib if I'd tried that! Well done Kayleigh for not stopping too. I couldn't even do Jesmond Dene without stopping - shame on me! That has to be the hilliest for me. Also done Carlisle which is one of the hilliest, but it doesn't compare to Jesmond - that ruined me for 2 days hahaha. Great running, hope to see you both soon 🙂
Ahhh we loved the bulldog too! What a cutie 🐶 Haha to be fair Jesmond Dene does have a tough hill! At least you gave it a go 🙌🏻 Yep, hopefully catch up with you at a Parkrun soon 😊 thanks for the support as always! 💙🙌🏻
Nice to meet you both on Saturday. Great vid. Also our first time visiting Flatts Lane parkrun. Volunteers were excellent and glad we only had to do the hill twice!
Did my first parkrun recently (Albert parkrun) after watching your videos - really enjoyed it and will defo be going again! I am really close to flatts lane too, not sure I dare try it just yet 😂. Class video again guys 👏🏻
Ah Amy! This is amazing! Chris owes you a coffee for this 😂 well done for getting out and trying it and we’re so glad to hear you loved it! Stick at it, it’s great fun 🙌🏻 we haven’t been to Albert yet, so maybe we’ll see you there 😊 thank you so much for watching!
This was my first Park Run, heart attack hill is great. Try Marshall Drive in Saltburn it’s down 1 side of the field and all the way back up again 4 times
Haha yes! We’ve done Marshall Drive (there’s a very moany video on our channel because I ran it after a week packed with racing 😂 so would like to go back)! Ormesby 10k sounds fun, we love the mud! 😂
@@northernninjarunner5506ah we didn’t realise it was this Sunday! Unfortunately we can’t make it but definitely one to add to the calendar for next year! Thanks for putting it on our radar 🎉 and enjoy marshalling!
Ah cool! There’s quite a lot of hilly routes being unearthed since we mentioned it! Will have to make a list! Yeah, we like the challenge of a hilly course too! We must be a bit sadistic haha! 😂
Around christmas 2019, I ran two very different parkruns in Melbourne, Australia: Albert & Studley. Albert is almost dead flat, around a lake. Studley goes up and down the banks of the Yarra river, including a section of path with 10 switch-backs that you descend on the way out and climb on the way back!
Often wondered why this one comes up so "hard" (or slow) in my list as some of it is on an old railway isn't it. Having seen the hilly bit can now see why!
Haha yes! It is on an old railway line at the beginning so the hill would be quite a surprise if we hadn’t been pre-warned, but it’s definitely worth a go! Thanks for watching Tim 😃🙌🏻
