In the Church of Jesus Christ (otherwise known as the Mormon Church), young adults are called to serve full-time missions. A member who chooses to serve will submit an application with no knowledge as to where in the world they will go. The leaders of the Church then determine where the person will go based on the need of missionaries in different areas and on inspiration.
HOWEVER. Culturally in the Church of Jesus Christ, it is believed that the mission to which you are going is the exact mission for you. So when missions change due to the inability to obtain a visa or other reasons, are you no longer where you are "supposed to be?"
In this episode, the hosts talk about their mission experiences and opinions as to whether or not there is a "correct" mission.
Were you sent to the wrong mission? We want to hear! Let us know in the comments below!

Important to remember that just because you didn't teach that Brazilian lady doesn't mean you didn't influence her walk with the Lord. The first missionaries I met were whilst I was abroad in southern Europe and I only spoke with the elder for about 5 minutes but what he said has become part of the base of my testimony. I was ready at the time but I finally met with my local missionaries 2 years later. I would never have accepted the gospel without him and it breaks my heart that he doesn't know how much he's helped me.

I had a mission companion who used to compare her mission experience to her brother's. It was a problem because in our mission we were well received and were frequently welcomed into homes. Whereas in her brother's mission he tracked so much, he had bloody feet. And for some nutty reason, she thought the bloody feet was a sign of a good missionary. I was quite happy to have whole feet.

I really like watching your channel. I've learned so much from it even though I've been life long member. We really need to avoid the toxic behaviors & say that from persnal experience. I got my mission call in 1982 I was called to serve in the California Ventura mission. Initially I was a little disappointed I didn't get foeign mission call. About 2 months after I was in the mission field in my first area during Octber General Conference President Kimball announced that missions for men would be reduced to 11/2 years. Shortly before I went home in 1984 President Kimball increased the time to 2 years. I have sister who seerved in Beazil around the last couple of months she got very sick & ended up goung home a month early. While it may be discouraging to experience various circumstances of serving a mission the important thing is to serve worthily & trust in the Lord because he is in charge & knows what he is doing.

Hey! I am a convert who no longer believes in but loves the church :) one of the elders who taught me had his mission call come in as "Sophia Bulgaria mission" but because Turkey was a part of that mission back then we were lucky to get him and his companion, and he kind of found out about it last minute. He did learn great Turkish later on tho and is now happily married to a half Turkish half American member of the church ❤️

Short version: I was the opposite of enthused when I opened my call. I spent 6 weeks in the MTC before going home for medical reasons. Whole time I was at the MTC, something seemed "off". That was my mission experience. How do you simplify that when answering "so where did you serve?" Missions are like the military: no two experiences are the same and those who never served tend to overemphasize the surface without knowing anything about the rest.

Big thanks to Eric for sharing his experience! Like him, I was called to serve my mission in Brazil and also went to the Provo MTC while I waited for my visa to clear. Thankfully, everything came through in time to go straight to my mission. It was a great experience and I learned a lot about myself, my beliefs, and about Jesus as my Savior. Just a few months into my mission, me and all the other missionaries serving in foreign countries were sent home, pending temporary assignment. I ended up finishing my mission in Atlanta, Georgia. This change introduced even more difficulty and stress to the already challenging missionary lifestyle. I put a lot of unnecessary anxiety and expectations upon myself as I wanted to be the best missionary I could be. As such, I wish I that I could have seen this video at that time in my life! After some reflection upon my missionary experiences, I still believe that I was truly called by God to serve Him and His children. However, I wish that I could've had a larger perspective upon what my individual contribution to that service should have been. I am very grateful for the support I had from my family and priesthood leaders helping me through that time. Still, I think that there are several unhealthy expectations and unhelpful ideas that originate in Church culture about serving a mission. Eric pointed out a few of them. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to Eric for sharing his story.

I knew many missionaries who had to wait to get into France on my mission. I was lucky in that I only stayed an extra two weeks in the MTC. I had a companion that waited six months. One of the Elders I served with in the MTC had some health problems that kept him from coming to France with the rest of us. The Lord knows what you need, maybe your exposure to Portuguese will matter.

Missions are completely unethical - proselytizing is not ethical at all. Spending a few years to help others when you are young (or at any age!) is a great thing to do but the part of it that is completely wrong is trying to convince others to convert to your religion. I have a Buddhist practice and am always happy to talk about my practice and if anyone wants to learn how to meditate or about Buddhist dharma I am happy to help - but I would never try to convert anyone, it is too unethical.

TeveJera Bailey is right. You just advertised your religion. There is nothing unethical about someone sharing with you what they believe is not only true but will bring great benefit to you. In fact, it would be unethical for them not to tell you.

Just a tip: Using all caps and repeating the same thing over and over again does not make anything true. I believe in God because I have received personal revelation from God. I believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true because I have received personal revelation from God. Without personal revelation, all you have is tradition and circular reasoning. Have you prayed to God to know if the Bible is true? I have. So I know from God through prayer that it is true. But unless you have received that witness from God, you have no rational basis for religious belief. Same goes for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and The Book of Mormon. Explain to me how it is possible to have true religion without prophets who receive direct revelation from God. The reason for this inquiry is simple: there are multiple interpretations of the same New Testament. You cannot deny this. If there were only one interpretation, there would only be one denomination of Christianity. But instead we see thousands. When left to their own interpretations, humans inevitably interpret wrong. Thus, it is impossible to know that any idea is true unless you have prayed about it yourself. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is predicated upon the fact that if God does not communicate with his creations in a very real sense, then He may as well not exist. Most gods in many religions are ones that are spoken to. The true God is the One who speaks back. But instead of realizing that personal revelation is the only rational basis for religious belief, you yell at the comment section and expect them to take it all at face value. I _have_ prayed. I _have_ read the New Testament. And I have done the same with the Old Testament, and the Book of Mormon. And all of this scripture has strengthened my belief in Christ. Because I have received personal revelation from God, I _know_ that Jesus is the Christ. The New Testament teaches that spiritual things are spiritually discerned. You can only know spiritual truth when the Spirit of Truth communicates it to you. I have done so with the Bible. I have done so with the Book of Mormon as well. And don't call me precious in response. You pompous hypocrite.

GORDON,YOU ARE JUST DOING HARM TO YOURSELF. DO NOT BE STUBBORN. PRAY SWEETHEART AND LET YOUR PRIDE ASIDE. EVEN TODAY A NUMBER OF "MORMONS" HAVE FOUND SALVATION AND HOLY FREEDOM BY DROPPING THE MASK OF CONCEIT AND RECEIVING THE GRACE AND MERCY OF OUR LORD JESUS. SO,WHY DO NOT YOU DO THE SAME ?
@blusheep2
@blusheep2 Год назад
@@gordonbarnes7005 God Bless you Gordon, but how is "personal revelation" NOT circular reasoning. Now I am not against personal revelation but the problem is that we can hear from God, our own imagination and the enemy. All three use the same means. Our emotions. Before anyone has a clue how to discern between the Holy Ghost, ourselves and the enemy the church asks unbelievers to read the BoM and rely on these feelings. Human nature is prone to feel good about things they WANT to believe and if someone is willing to spend that much time reading the book then its likely that they are already poised to accept what they read. This method of validation also doesn't take into account all those who have read the book and found themselves unimpressed. It also doesn't take into account that people in just about every religion... definitely religions like Christianity and Islam... report feeling as if God has confirmed for them the truth of their beliefs. So, hearing the voice of God is not so simple and if we solely rely on that method we aren't likely to find truth. It stops us from seeking, from questioning, from being able to evaluate honestly those things that demonstrate we are in error. Considering your method, how would you ever know if your feelings were deceiving you? ________________ To answer some of your questions.... You said, "Explain to me how it is possible to have true religion without prophets who receive direct revelation from God." - God must reveal himself for us to know Him though we don't necessarily need revelation to know He exists. That doesn't mean that everyone who calls themselves a prophet is an actual prophet. You said, "there are multiple interpretations of the same New Testament. You cannot deny this. If there were only one interpretation, there would only be one denomination of Christianity. But instead we see thousands." -The Mormons also add their interpretations to the Bible. Even the BoM is going to be interpreted by men. Since Mormons consider themselves Christians then Mormonism is just one more denomination. The difference is that they believe in another book, just as some denominations have the apocrypha while others do not. Many denominations have claimed their own prophet such as the Millerites back in the 1800s, the Jehovah Witnesses, 7th Day Adventists. They also all claim to be the restored church on Earth. You said, "When left to their own interpretations, humans inevitably interpret wrong." - Yes, they often do. You know what they also do. They also, often interpret correctly. You said, "Thus, it is impossible to know that any idea is true unless you have prayed about it yourself." - I think above I've answered this but to sum up, you are still relying on a subjective human experience without any way to prove that you are actually hearing from God. Both Judaism and Christianity believe that God communicates with his creation. Mormons don't have a monopoly on that belief. The issue is that God delivered us scripture and that scripture warned us against false teachers and false prophets that will come and preach a different gospel. It warned us and told us to reject them when they came. Joseph is said to be a prophet of God. Not only did he receive a visit from an angel, he participated in the miraculous transcription of some ancient plates. Later he received numerous revelations that he delivered to the church. So, this guy knows the voice of God, does he not. Did you know that Joseph tried to sell the BoM copyright in Canada because he had told everyone that he had received a revelation to do so. So he traveled up to Canada but failed to sell the copy right. To explain this, it was said what I wrote above. There are three sources of revelation. God, ourselves and the enemy and this revelation of Joseph's was obviously not from God. That is the stregnth of personal revelation. That is the danger of it. Joseph was the "man of God." The prophet on earth chosen to restore it yet he got it wrong. How much else did he get wrong but we are unaware because it was doctrine instead of foretelling? I agree that the communication style of Gesu is uncalled for. Nonetheless, personal revelation is NOT the only rational basis for religious belief. In fact, its the least certain of all the others. I don't think you have read the Bible all that deeply. If you had you would have read that there is only one God and that the doctrine of becoming gods is the same sin that Lucifer was cast out of heaven for. Mormons upon conversion begin a quest to satisfy the ordinances required so that they will become gods one day. I would suggest that you put down the BoM for a year and read only the Bible. Listen to its commentators and theologians that have written on it. Then go back to the BoM and see if you see a difference. I'd wager you will. I hope you really consider this. I know the Mormon church teaches you to rely on your personal revelation, but that really is a poor way of knowing truth. It makes sense that they would push this though, if you honestly think about it. If one can always fall back on their "personal revelation" they can ignore the fact that Joseph Smith was an occultist that believed in magic and used the same magic stone in his transcription of the BoM. They can ignore the fact that Joseph lied or was greatly deceived about the BoA scrolls. They can ignore the fact that he was completely wrong in his "revelation" of the kinderhook plates which are now known and proven frauds. They can ignore the fact that Joseph Smith not only married many wives without his wife's knowledge or consent but that some of them were married to other men at the same time.
