Was I Wrong About G-Shock's CasiOak? (Yes.)

Funny thing is this watch isn’t trying to homage the Royal Oak, but the 1974 Casio-tron, which also had eight sides. Turns out the whole “Royal Oak” homage thing was a coincidence. Still a great looking watch and one of my favorites in my collection!

Got my first Casioak this week. Went for the new midnight fog version. Metal case, smaller case size, positive display. Dare I say it, it actually looks quite classy.

Great watch. I have this same model and it is a great lesson for those after the Swatch Moonswatch. Remember, this G-Shock was huge, selling at 2 or 3 times retail when it originally came out. Completely sold out everywhere. I put an order in, waited 10 months and got it at retail. Happy to wait, no problem. Don't fall for hype.

I have 5, modded and unmodded, all are excellent and I am one on a steel bracelet today.

Bought 3 of these. Contemplating a fourth. I can't believe sometimes how pretty the metal ones look. Completely get being sick of the royal oak homages but in person, it changes 😅

The sole wrong you can do with a G-Shock as tool and casual watches is picking the incorrect size. That's why i only consider the 5600 series and believe that branding the "Baby-Gs" as "female" makes very little sense: there should be a sturdy G-Shock model for every wrist size.

I bought the gray one on a whim a year ago and was surprised how much I ended up wearing it. Stylish looking beater and feels so light on the wrist, I've enjoyed this one.

Hey Jory, If you press the mode and light button at the same time the hands move away from the digital display. They go back if you press the buttons again but it still helps when trying to read the digital display.

I'm loving the modularity ecosystem that is building up around this model. It has the the quick release straps, along with the crazy colorways so they're very fun to mix and match if you keep investing into anything GA-2100.

I always wanted a G Shock, but felt they were just far too thick. Then this came out. Bought it immediately in 2019. Fantastic watch and as tough as they come. Use it for camping, outdoor sports, work, all sorts really. It’s a proper scratched up mess now, but works as well as the day I bought it. All the best 👍🏾🇬🇧

I feel it's unfair to call an Oak homage to every octagonal shaped watch. It's like saying all round watches are homages of Patek Philippe, Breguet or Robert Dudley or whatever.

The Tough Solar / Bluetooth version of this watch is coming in May 2022. Sales will be going through the roof. I was also not intetested on this G-Shock, starting with the CasiOak nickname, which I hate (BTW, CASIO has indicated that, actually, the design is a homage to the original DW-5600C G-Shock and its octogonal bezel, which is decades older than the PPh.. It has nothing to do with it) Now, I may actually get it.

You grew a bit bigger now in my eyes. I was expecting full blooded rant on plastic watches. But as you said. It’s G-Shock baby. Hate when people compare it with automatic or steel (except steel G-Shocks). Well done Jory

I recently got a earth tone grey Casioak. I have Seiko’s that I wear (my most commonly worn would actually be my gold Seiko 😂😂) but was after something a little more casual at times and the Casioak is perfect. Yeah I’m happy with it looks great simple easy casual

Would we have the MoonSwatch without the CasiOak?

Bought the blue/gray a couple years ago and I like it more than I thought I would. I wear it more than I thought I would. If Casio could jam Mudmaster features in it I would be all over it.

I love g shock watches. I had the metal case version of this. For some reason I sold it then regretted it almost immediately. Now they are releasing an entirely all metal solar version of it.

I had a Casioak my wife bought me before we got married, but I misplaced it. I feel bad. So I hope to find it again some time. Was such a fun watch!

I have 2 of CasiOak watches. I choose the grey and the dark blue with the near white bezel. Excellent and comfortable to wear. For accuracy these are keeping better than 5 seconds per month. I found the display a bit small. The negative display requires a lot of light. I have to look very carefully to see the display well. If I don't need to see the date or the seconds this watch is terrific for normal use. I like this watch for what it is.

I get that you're tired of Royal Oak homages and the casioak kits but there's something to be said for a water resistant, shock resistant watch that comes on a brushed metal bracelet that will never suffer a spring bar failure or the resin cracking. Just my two cents as a field geologist with one of the metal converted ga2100's.

I have the straight army green, not camo, and find it an elegant match for any shirt with an epaulet on it. But then, almost as an afterthought, I got the mustard yellow one. And I am so in love! I have never seen flat black look better anywhere. Full stop. I wear it all the time.

Pro tip: Hold Light and press Mode to move the hands away from the display. Repeat to bring them back to analog time.

Just got mine with the Tiffany/Powder Blue indexes, and I love it to the point I'm wearing it even in my sleep. And in some cases, my GA2100 works with my long sleeved button shirt just fine. It doesn't look out of place for me, and it works, 20BAR water resistance in terms of depth and pressure, Carbon Core Guard for protection, resin material that just works (well, it works for me because I don't have the most sensitive skin in terms of sweat), and it's multipurpose.

Homage watches are great when the original costs more than a house or a Porsche. Next time you see an incredible sports car, consider how many tiny little watches cost more. It is madness.

I just picked up the white with black dial version of this on a whim at a local BX. It looks really nice, and much sleeker than a standard G-Shock. Sure, it might be an homage to the AP Royal Oak, but it has its own character than straight-up reps of the Oak. It goes extremely well with the white Adidas Superstars I wear, as well as any shirts or jackets with white accents. It's quite attention grabbing, and pops quite well. I think these things are the perfect balance of G-Shock durability and the classiness of something more expensive.

I'm definitely swapping mine into the metal case, just my thoughts. I'm not paying nearly $600 for the GMB2100D-1A. Granted it's a nice watch but the swap can be done for half the cost and still look great.

I have this watch, though the hands can e moved out the way I think a display below the analogue hands would be better

I have the gray version with the positive display and find it a very good G-Shock for small wrist guys like me. Moreover, it's movent its the most accurate one I ever found and I do have a Bulova curved which is quite accurate. For the last two months its accuracy is 0,00 sec/day.

My daily wear! I love it... just hate the strap. So I went out got a special NATO strap adapter and an all black NATO strap. Also wish the buttons were bigger. My sausage fingers struggle to push the smoll buttons.

The original 5600 design will always be my favorite G-Shock. I got one for scuba diving as a big kid and that’s probably the watch, more than any other I had, that got me into watches. It was my first watch that was a genuinely good watch.

The grey one has a positive display. That's why I picked up that one first. There's also a new neon version I may pick up.

I have a request, if that's okay: I'm wondering if you could do a video of your top ten military and tactical watches, like Luminox, G-Shock, Marathon, and the like. I'm also curious: I recently bought a watch from a Canadian company called Momentum. I haven't seen many reviews about them, even though they've been around for over thirty years. They're based in Vancouver and have a reputation for making strong, long-lasting dive watches; the model I have, the D6 chronograph, has been performing beautifully thus far. Have you come across Momentum watches and, if so, what are your thoughts on them?

This is a watch for people who love watches. The ani-digi display is the best of both worlds - giving quick time readout with the digital display as well as a spatial relation time readout with the analogue hands. Why I say it’s for watch lovers: the analog part is actually celebrated more than the digital part. The style is beautiful, and the comfort and sizing is superb. To boot the backlight is so practical and that fade-out on the LED…chefs kiss

I have my ga2100 (blacked out version) on a leather zulu and it actually works crazy well.

Say what you want about those $70 AliExpress RO style cases, but the bracelets are better machined than any of the seiko’s under $500. The clasp is precisely milled and the anodizing has proven to be more durable than the PVD on my SRPD79. Oh and they come with screw in links

Got the transparent "Jellyfish" version of the Casioak. Love every bit of it.

Jory, over here in Europe they released another three variants on the GA-2100, maintaining that 'stealth' black case and dial, but with indices and hands in neon baby-blue, orange and lime green not my thing really, but the new colours really pop

You even read out is has a hand shift feature in the specs …I sense an indiglo moment here. I have the red one..not selling though.

It’s a cool looking g-shock. They made a clear one that I would love to get. And if they did a Neo Tokyo like the other ones I’d be all over it.

I dig that it's a weather-proof beater without looking like GI Joe vomited tech. I've never been interested in G-Shocks or Ironman watches because I always found them cartoonish, and sometimes nearly gas station knife-level of ugly...My A1 looks pretty swank by comparison.

Just buy the red one from a store. Dude, they are cheap. Macy's has a 25% off sale and has them. Tilly's has them on discounted too. Zumies also. Zappos also (they email $35 off coupons all the time).

The new Solar/BTooth yellow Casioak is the only watch to get me excited in a long time ..... I remember being besotted by Swatch designs in the 80s & these new solar Oaks, illuminate my interest like neon!

The red one is illegeble.....theresn awsome black with cream dial and red and blue indicators!!

The negative display sucks. I got it out of the package and couldn't make out the dial. Put it back in the box and returned it in the mail that day. I think the new updated CasiOak's have 2 versions with regular displays (yellow and black/gray), which is awesome.

I have the red one and the neo Tokyo-ish one. Would recommend 100/10!

I definitely put one in the "royal oak" bracelet. No regrets. The bracelt is my favorite thing about the royal oak and ill never pay more than 10k for a watch let alone just for a bracelet.

I keep coming back to this one every now and then. Pretty sure one day I will buy it, especially if I ever see it on sale below $100 CAD. I'd want the original 1AER in black with white indices though given the stealth just seems too hard to read in poor lighting.

Red version is easy to find. I have the blacked out as you show here on the video. The one I would like to find at a reasonable price is the same watch but with white indices and hands. It's out there but at a much higher price.

Got the black one with white hour indicator instead of the full black one, very readable, very comfy, affordable and has more than enough functions. I also bought the digital Neo Tokyo G shock after seing your video, looks so cool, that retro, neon, synthwave, 80s, cyberpunk vibe is killer. Also from how many watches can it be called a collection? Got 6 in a case that fits 12, does that count? :))) Even got a reason to buy more to fill it

We the utilitarian green….loving it. Didn’t think I would when they first came out but my son and I got one each….they are bad ass.

A year later, Casio now offers the Full Metal Casioak GMB2100BD-1A. I love the blacked out metal version. Makes the resin version feel cheap. What's your take?

Tbh casioak strap feels more comfortable and yes it feel smaller on my wrist than my gw5600 to me, i enjoy wearing it. But still, when i'm going outdoors camping i still using the mudman 9300

Thanks for your review. I just acquired a G shock GA-2100FR-3 ADR. It seems the same as yours. I mainly bought it because I am a farmer in a wet climate and all the cheap watches I have had have failed after a year or two. In US currency the list price was $238, but this one was on sale for $100. Expensive in my terms, but not if it really lasts!

Great beach watch, and amazing value.

I was wrong about this watch as well until I got one gifted for my b-day a bonth ago. I got the military green GA-2110-ET-8AER. I like it. Only two things I don´t like: no distinctive minute markers. The LCD display is negative = unreadable at a glance or under dim light.

I really don't think Casio tried to make an homage with this one; it's a coincidence. The customer base for G-Shock is many times larger than the watch enthusiast segment. I never wanted one until I saw the Natural Colors Series version, which I ordered today immediately upon seeing it.

The colourway you like is the one I own. I also own a GWG-1000, DW-5600s and a Pelagos LHD (which seems to be about the only Tudor you like). I must be watching too many of your videos and aligning to your tastes or something 😂

Hey Jory, thanks for the review of them, but just feel the love for the AP and the Casioaks in particular etc, they're far more affordable and practical too, especial if you add in the Blue Tooth functions of the GA-B2100/2110's etc?

Does the resin band on this g shock affect your wrist like the other reason bands do?

It's not a copy of the AP Royal Oak. It's a riff on the original G-Shock, which had a semi-hexagonal case. Look it up.

It could have been better if the 'day of the week' sub-dial had some more functions integrated. Yes, its better to go for resin Casio watches instead of steel.
