Saying that a person must have been black because they were a slave is the weirdest take I've heard in a long time. It ignores the huge number of slaves throughout history who were of all races and from all places. It was written and produced by Henry Louis Gares Jr a Black American who teaches history at Harvard University. I first saw it on public television. It is avaiable on line and it is free.
Hey Dan, just wanted to share my perspective as an African-American. I've heard this rhetoric for decades now, since I was a kid. It was always said to the side by some elder in the church here or there or by family. It was never fully taught but was shared like it was hidden knowledge or a secret. I knew it wasn't true, always knew, because I had friends who were Jewish and now I know as well because of all the research into history that I've done in the last 5-10 years. What always interested me about this is the "why?" of it all and now I think I've figured it out. African-Americans (and Caribbean-Americans to a lesser extent) are a new people. Unlike most other people-groups, we can't trace our ancestry too far back on average. I've seen videos of people finding papers on their ancestors all the way back to even the pilgrims. Most African-American's can't do that because of a peculiar bump called 'Slavery'. For a lot of us, our ancestry ends there. So we have a desire to attach ourselves to ancient history any way we can. This is seen also in those who claim things such as "Cleopatra was Black" in the face of all data and evidence. It stems from a longing for an established ( and recognized) lineage similar to what other people groups have. There's also the added element of the Exodus narrative being a powerful mirror of Antebellum slavery. African culture and heritage was more or less ripped away from the enslaved Africans and their religion condemned as pagan and devil-worship. Even trying to tell that to my mother and she cant accept that the Africans were not Christian before colonization, insisting that they had the gospel first. It's this lack of direct ancient history that, I think, leads to narratives such as what you see here. I know it is a white person presenting it, but it's well alive in the Black community as I have experienced it.
As a fellow "brother" I second everything you just said. I try to tell people that because of how our ancient history and ancestoral tree has been wiped out, we have struggled for a VERY long time in trying to find an identity and where we fit in when it comes to historical value and importance. Things like the Black Hebrew Israelite movement or the Kemetic thought found in our people are just desperate attempts to feel validation and importance in a world that seemed to take that away from us....and I understand the temptation and the attraction to this way of thought....but its false and only leads to more division amongst our larger society and amongst ourselves. I try to appreciate the things learned and gained from my slave ancestors passed through the generations. The strength and resilience passed. The lessons and wisdom. For so long African culture and religion has been demonized and vilified. Even when it adopted some of Christianity such as Vodou it is vilified, if not even more than before. In fact it is debated and argued by historians that Ethiopia is the actually the first country to make Christianity their "official religion". This dates all the way back to the Kingdom of Aksum (which is now modern day Ethiopia) in the mid 4th century CE. Look up Ezana of Axum. There is a rich and ancient tradition in Ethiopia concerning Christianity. It is extremely old and undoubtedly one of the first African countries to be introduced to Christianity with traditions going as far back to the Pentecost story in Acts 2.

They had several public access television shows in New York as well. They have some pretty wild claims that seem to lean towards militant conspiracies, in my opinion. Their message seems to promote separation, segregation, and "othering"... all of which I oppose. These videos are informative and, frankly, necessary. As someone of Jewish ethnic background (non-religious), I often find it disturbing how easily Ashkenazi Jews (which I am not, but nevertheless..) get dismissed as "fake Jews" in all sorts of antisemitic conspiracy theories.
