Was Sauron More Powerful Than Morgoth?

Sauron's Fortress

There was a time when Sauron was a mere servant of Morgoth. But during the second and third ages, Sauron was the predominant villain. So did he ever match or even surpass the power of his former master? At the dawn of time, Morgoth was the most powerful of the Valar, while Sauron was a mere Maiar and not even the most powerful one at that. However, over time Morgoth weakened himself significantly by pouring his power into his dark armies in the physical realm. Sauron was able to build off what Morgoth had already built, instead pouring his essence into the one ring. Thus, Tolkien described Sauron at the end of the second age as more powerful than Morgoth at the end of the first, although Sauron never came close to matching Morgoth's power at the beginning of the first age.

It depends on what time period you want to compare the two really. With each Valar, their strengths were not unlimited. Meaning that during the creation of Arda each Valar involved with its creation used up a great portion of their strength and once depleted, that strength never returned while they inhabited the physical world. For example, Yavana created the two great trees and once they were destroyed by melkor and ungolient, she lacked the power to create two new trees. This is why the Valar sought the silmirs because a portion of that light was in them. Melkor was the strongest Valar but he used up vast amounts of his strength unmaking what was sung into creation by the other Valar. He expended great power corrupting the world and by the end of the first age he was a mere shadow of his former self. He could not even heal himself from the wounds given to him by Fingolfin and forever after their battle he walked with a limp. At the point when Sauron held all of the rings except for the 3 elven ones their powers where pretty close.

@@decimalexercise7154 I don’t think Sauron is anything against Morgoth even when Morgoth is a shade of himself. Tolkien never states Sauron was more powerful than Morgoth. The quote you're referring to states "Greater Effectively" not more powerful. There is a difference.
@joot4949
@joot4949 Год назад
Can you explain a bit more?
@nwobw
@nwobw Год назад
@@joot4949 It was a religious concept for Tolkien. Sauron was still more complete with more of his original angelic soul and powers intact. Morgoth had lost some of his - the ability to walk unclad or change form, but he was still leagues more powerful than Sauron. So while Sauron may still have had access most of his original powers and while he was even more powerful with the one ring, Morgoth's remaining power pool still dwarfed Sauron's. This is a spiritual concept about living in accordance with God's Will and God's Plan. Morgoth went against Illuvatar's Plan and was diminshed as a result of it. There's a quote from Morgoth's Ring in the Essay Myth's Transformed that again reiterates Morgoth's Supremacy over Sauron: "Melkor was not Sauron. We speak of him being 'weakened, shrunken, reduced' ; but this is in comparison with the Great Valar. " Tolkien was meticulous with his words. Greater 'effectively' is not the same as more powerful.

It wasn't really a mistake, if they didn't do what they did, they would've been crushed by the forces of good. Morgoth as strong as he is, would get wrecked the moment 2-3 valars showed up. He needed an army to fight on many locations so he could distract his enemies. Sauron had Morgoth's remaining forces, but it was proven when he died that he could never faced the entire middle earth alone. He needed them to weaken themselves because on an head-on fight, even with his power and divinity, he would still lose when facing the elves. The elves killed balrogs and dragons before, the dwarves killed dragons, and men we're too many, this shows that they have the ability to kill powerful beings.

In this way Sauron was also wiser than Melkor-Morgoth._ _Sauron was not a beginner of discord; and he probably knew more of the 'Music' than did Melkor, whose mind had always been filled with his own plans and devices, and gave little attention to other things._ _The time of Melkor's greatest power, therefore, was in the physical beginnings of the World; a vast demiurgic lust for power and the achievement of his own will and designs, on a great scale._ _And later after things had become more stable, Melkor was more interested in and capable of dealing with a volcanic eruption, for example, than with (say) a tree. It is indeed probable that he was simply unaware of the minor or more delicate productions of Yavanna: such as small flowers."_ _"Morgoth's Ring"_ chapter/section _"Notes on the motives in the Silmarillion"_

It took an Army of Valar to defeat Morgoth. Morgoth was more interested in destruction and chaos than domination. Sauron was more interested in power to control everything. One of the two is still in chains in a prison of sorts and the other can never take form again.

How? The three rings were specifically not made under Saurons watch. They were hidden and just used sparingly and nenya only after Sauron was gone during the watchful peace etc etc. just using it would get his attention from the unseen realm as it were. Similar to Finrod and Beren using their powers to cloak themselves in illusions and Sauron felt a disturbance in the force as it were which is why Glorfindel goes another way for his light drew the attention of Sauron away so the fellowship company could begin their journey more safely

Yep Sauron did in fact become more powerful at the height of his power than Morgoth had become at his weakest. This was because the One Ring focused and only amplified Sauron's power, whereas Morgoth only ever weakened himself by putting his power into his dark creations like the dragons and so on.

It's a non-argument. Every evil on middle earth is contained within Morgoth's shadow. One cannot think of Sauron as detached from Morgoth. If you remove Morgoth from the fabric of Middle earth then there is no more evil, no more mighty Sauron.

Sauron was only able to be more “powerful” in the sense that he controlled greater portions of Middle Earth and even for that, his magic and his rings were dependent on the power than Morgoth had invested into Arda. He used the corruption Morgoth had sowed and channeled his own magic through it to create his power base. Even the one Ring may only have been as effective as it was because gold had an especially corrupting influence through Morgoth.

Depends on people's interpretation if even that is a fair competition. _"Sauron was 'greater', effectively, in the Second Age than Morgoth at the end of the First. Why? Because, though he was far smaller by natural stature, he had not yet fallen so low. Eventually he also squandered his power (of being) in the endeavour to gain control of others. But he was not obliged to expend so much of himself._ _To gain domination over Arda, Morgoth had let most of his being pass into the physical constituents of the Earth - hence all things that were born on Earth and lived on and by it, beasts or plants or incarnate spirits, were liable to be 'stained'._ _Morgoth at the time of the War of the Jewels had become permanently 'incarnate': for this reason he was afraid, and waged the war almost entirely by means of devices, or of subordinates and dominated creatures._ _Sauron, however, inherited the 'corruption' of Arda, and only spent his (much more limited) power on the Rings; for it was the creatures of earth, in their minds and wills, that he desired to dominate.

Tolkien never said that Sauron was more powerful than Morgoth. That's a complete misinterpretation of what Tolkien stated in that at the end of the Second Age Sauron was "Greater" than Morgoth had been at the end of the First. Morgoth was ALWAYS more powerful than Sauron, but in terms of achievement, Sauron at the end of the Second Age had achieved more.

It seems that it's too hard for many people in the comments to grasp the idea that power levels of certain characters may change drastically over time. It's better if you actually watched the video, or even better, read the books, before rushing into the comment section to write idiotic comments, like "Wat, are you tripping, he never even came close, etc." The author specifically states that Melkor was indeed untouchable before the creation of the world and in its earliest ages, however, over time he poured most of his power into his creations and ceased to be a major power by himself. Basically, after the Battle of Powers he never again took part in any battle personally, except for the time when Fingolfin called him out to a 1v1, and Morgoth had a pretty hard time beating him, even ending up having a permanent wound for the rest of his life. So yeah, if an elf, undoubtedly powerful, but still an elf, could give him that much trouble, I don't see why it's so hard to believe that Sauron at his peak could've surpassed Morgoth in power, especially since it's confirmed by Tolkien himself. Not to mention that Sauron himself beat the elves of the first age before, including Galadriel's brother Finrod, and in the Second Age it took both the greatest elf and a greatest man of their time to put him down, and both perished while doing so. So yeah, go study the material, instead of getting information from Wikipedia articles or RU-vid shorts, like most people seem to do
