It's an amazing game. It feels like the game that the devs intended to make with BotW originally and took them ~7 years to realize on the Switch. It is a masterpiece. I think what really threw many hardcore Zelda fans off is the fact that it was pitched as a sequel. There's so much discontinuity with BotW that calling it a sequel felt like a bait and switch. It's more a reimagining.

I agree, Tears of the Kingdom seems to be the game the devs wanted to make originally. It makes Breath of the Wild feel like a tech demo!

It's best to look at it more like the most expensive expansion to a game ever made, rather than a game itself - and that's coming from someone who played and enjoyed both. I can definitely see TOTK not aging as well as its predecessor, and for good reason - it didn't fix certain issues the original had - dungeon design being minimal and unchallenging - and OVERFIXED other issues; navigation was painfully slow in the original without Revali's Gale or when it was on cooldown, so they fixed that by giving you access to a vehicle that you can build to completely trivialize navigation within the first few hours of the game (if you know, you know). It's cumbersome at first without battery expansions, but that line exponentially shifts to overpowered, and then to 'why would I ever ride a horse again'. Seriously, I found myself jaw agape in awe when I realized they finally added multiple ways to climb wet surfaces during rain, but the sidequest to actually obtain the Froggy suit takes you to nearly every stable in Hyrule and is one of the game's lengthiest sidequests. Meanwhile, you can pop down into central Depths from the moment you leave the GSI and snag Autobuild, which lets you assemble The Funny Vehicle at any time for 9 Zonaite and makes climbing look like a fool's game. Then, as cool as having AI helpers follow you around and distract/beat up enemies for you, the fact those same AI are also your gateway to using champion powers (as opposed to just letting you use them yourself) is a huge detractor, compounded by their annoying habit to simply Run Away At Top Speed from you while you try to activate those abilities. Yunobo is more of a hindrance than a help, seeing as he knocks enemies sideways and grants them invulnerability as they get up. Mineru's mech is as clunky as it comes and riding it mid-combat is such a terrible decision due to the fact YOU take damage when the mech (a gigantic hitbox) gets hit makes you wonder why that addition was ever created. As a last nitpick, the game really doesn't do enough to throw you a meaningful challenge - every shrine had to be designed with the possibility of seeing it for the first time, and it shows; some of them are so braindead simple (or not designed around the existence of Recall) that you start seeing them as more of a chore than something to actually get you thinking. I can't recall the last time the game made me really think about my routing as hard as, say, Twilight Princess' Lakebed Temple. TOTK has this love/hate relationship where it adds things that should've absolutely been in BOTW, but also things that should NEVER have been in BOTW. Wet climbing? Love it. Ascend and Recall? Awesome. But the Nuts & Bolts mechanisms, barely helpful partners, and shin-deep dungeon design make me have a longing for times past in the series. It was so easy to get lost and feel like you were on a genuine adventure in BOTW, even if the lack of convenient transportation was the main reason. But that limitation had purpose, and seeing it completely shattered in TOTK makes it impossible to feel like you can wander into anything unexpected when you can so easily get somewhere incredibly high and observe the entirety of the topography below at a mere glance. It makes the world feel very *small*, which is the antithesis of having an open-world experience to begin with.

I definitely agree about the AI partners being annoying. There were so many times that I accidentally blew away items I was trying to pick up!

I like tears of the kingdom on my second playthrough. I feel like it's only good if you do not compare it to Breath of the Wild. I also preferred the champions in breath of the Wild. It made me love the characters and I didn't get that feeling from the sages. The music was amazing though.

Not really, a year often shows how good a game is as many people have a chance to play it and form opinions.
@drustan6890
@drustan6890 3 месяца назад
I don't think its silly, its basically a recency bias check on the game you bought. because we all can get starry eyed about a game when it first came out, but after playing it for months, was it really that great or were you just agreeing with the masses because that was the in-thing to do?? I for one, can say that after sinking in 250 hours into TOTK and on December 2023 when I finish the main story, find all the light roots, shrines, all gears, I can safely say it wasn't game of the year material and it was a let down. Reasons why TOTK was a let down to me: 1. the game advertised sky island gameplay, but sky island didnt make up the majority of exploration. 2. sky island was too few, and they were too identical, just some shrines and gatcha capsule and that pistony thingy. 3. Depths were cool at first but its barren AF, there's nothing down there, the biome was the same throughout, not enough enemy variety down there. 4. Ultrahand was a cool concept but I didnt find myself using it that much, maybe bc im stupid but I didnt have time to figure how the physics work and build my own transport. i just rely on the 2 fan 1 steering stick hoverboard to do all my heavy lifting. 5. I felt the game didnt have enough enemy variety yet again if you would ask me to recommend TOTK or BOTW to a newcomer, I would say TOTK for sure, its the complete package. because TOTK re-used BOTW assets and the surface landscape was mostly the same, i felt the novelty and wow factor wasn't there for me anymore, as someone who had played BOTW extensively before. That's just my opinion.

The third time I found the same feature in a sky island, I was disappointed. Another island that's a shrine, a launch pad, and a Zonai bubblegum machine? But as I got later into the game, I began to appreciate it. I could use these easy-to-warp-to high launchpads to reach all sorts of things in the sky and the ground, without even having to build anything. And from my map alone, I could recognize one of these island that I hadn't reached yet, and know that it was worth visiting for a shrine and new Zonai devices. The depths was the same way. At the beginning, it felt weird finding just "another overworld boss" over and over. But as I continued playing, I began going to the depths specifically for those bosses. There's no shrines and no Koroks: instead, there's pristine weapons, and boss battles to farm resources. I just wish there were more interesting rewards rewards in the treasure chests than "yet another armor that I'm not going to wear." I think it would've been more interesting if they'd swapped the Sage's Will with the DLC depths armor sets. Still keep the Miner Outfit in the depths, but put all of Link's previous-game-armor in the sky, with the Sage upgrades in the depths.

The depths were mega useful to me since every lightroot has a shrine in the exact same spot in the overworld

Idk why people are mad that you titled the video that. You even praise the game . People are way to on edge to defend totk yes one year is indeed enough time to ask if the game still holds up. It’s not like he released the video a day later, and no the game definitely can be fully played in 1 year any Zelda can

I think Tears of the Kingdom is the superior game in almost every way! The only thing that Breath of the Wild has over it is the fact that it came first. TotK never quite matched the same level of awe and new-ness (though discovering the Depths for the first time was certainly close).

I mean, the gameplay is fine. The loop does kinda suck if you don't click with Ultrahand though. And there is a lot of BS in the story and it really makes the heroes of the past come across as incompetent. It also really seems dumb that one secret stone is more powerful in Ganondorf's hands than, at least, the triforce of wisdom and a secret stone in Zelda's, while she's also the reincarnation of Hylia. Not showing Rauru and Sonia's kids to show how their legacy led into the Kingdom of today despite what happens to them would've been smart, even though it can be inferred that they had kids. Just comes across as a weird omission to never have them present in the kingdom or any flashbacks. Also being able to get flashbacks out of order. That said, I mainly gripe with the game because I feel like it's either not respecting my time or it's own content while I play it. Like zonai devices and falling ruins can be used to skip basically all traversal, and to really engage in exploring and discovering all the detail in the world, you really need to go on foot, and there aren't really any worthwhile rewards after you get the paraglider, other than the Master Sword, which isn't even so much of an exploration reward as it is either a curiosity reward for wondering what was up with the new dragon or seeing through the memories where it is. Also, unlike BotW, where The Great Plateau was a microcosm of the greater game, the Great Sky Island is the biggest and best Sky Island in the game, so it builds up expectations that none of the rest of the sky can live up to. Some is fun and interesting, but after you visit 1 or 2 regions sky islands, you've basically seen all the variety and none match that scale. I think the game would've benefitted from scaling down and being more dense like Majora's Mask. Then I wouldn't feel like my time was being wasted, but I also probably wouldn't feel the need to use ultrahand at all then, so the devs probably didn't want that. As a technological showcase, this game is a masterpiece. As a source of entertainment, it's a mixed bag, but whether or not it's a masterpiece or something possibly far less than a masterpiece really seems to depend entirely on one's own enjoyment of Ultrahand for most people. I have heard a few loved it and almost never used ultrahand, but, then again, the person I heard say that also really enjoyed Devil's Third, so they may just be too generous in general, lol

You are definitely right about the Great Sky Island, it got my expectations up way too high for the sky islands. They were still cool, but not nearly as epic as they seemed like they would be
@Chronoflation
@Chronoflation 3 месяца назад
@@idiosyncrasygaming Yeah. It also would've been cool if they had a simulated depths section or if you had to dive all the way into a tutorial depths area that you had to find your way out of to complete the tutorial. I think the tutorial emulating the full gameplay loop on a smaller scale was the smartest accomplishment Nintendo had with BotW, and it's really disappointed that they did not accomplish that really at all with TotK. It really feels like they just tried to remake a Sky Island version of the Great Plateau without thinking about why the Great Plateau was designed the was it was. Maybe it was like that because the sky islands were originally going to be more like that. I heard they really nerfed the sky after play testers complained about the sky being too crowded from the ground. Thanks for responding. Rare to get get such diligently responsive RU-vidrs these days, though, I totally get how impossible it can be to reply to or even just read most comments after you start getting even a few hundred comments on each video
@TheWerns
@TheWerns 3 месяца назад
Still a $70 DLC. Sky Islands and Depths are both disappointing, changes to the surface are not very interesting, Ultrahand feels out of place and ruins many of the systems copied from BotW, and Ganondorf's presence, motivation, and actions are boring. Only good thing in TotK was the improvements to combat and enemy/boss variety, but that's not enough to save it from Ultrahand hell.
