Was the DC-3 a better Glider than a ... Glider?

Did you know they took the engines off a DC-3 and it became a better glider than the proposed built ones at the time? The Douglas XCG-17 was one heck of a prototype that caused a life long Urban Legend.

As an aeronautical engineer I am really surprised that the C47 could be converted into a good glider, even if the Wright brothers launched aviation by designing a wonderful glider that they modified to make the first aeroplane! However, the figures prove the point: relative to contemporary gliders the XCG-17 was an excellent glider! I'll be damned if I haven't learnt a fascinating lesson! Thank you, Mr. McBryan!

The C-123 started life as a WWII glider, then went on to have a career with engines, it could have had turboprop or jet success if the manufacturer hadn't been crooked

Is it possible to up scale the dc-3 to make it a competitive aircraft since it was so popular when it was produced in large scales? It would be fun to scale it up to a 5 times larger aircraft with upgraded power and all the modern cockpit equipment to see the performance. An obstacle would be tilting fuselage when it is on the ground though.

The XCG-16 was based on the work of Vincent J. Burnelli. His ideas and designs were well ahead of their time and I consider myself lucky to be one of the caretakers of the only Burnelli designed aircraft to exist today. Thanks for the awesome video Mikey. Keep up the great work that you do.

Seeing the parted out A-380, while sad, only reinforces the fact that long after all the 380s are turned into beer cans, the DC-3 will still be flying somewhere. Ya gotta love it!

I remember with fondness, my flying on DC-3's here in New Zealand when I was younger. I now fly those same routes in my own DC-3 on my flight simulator. But they have such a varied and vital history, which is why I enjoy this channel so much. The magic thing of course, is that they are still making history. :)

I really enjoyed this video. About the in-depth history of the DC-3. And it's gliding derivation. And you are a lovely host! It sounds like you've done your homework. And such a charming presentation and excitement of the history of the DC-3. So let me offer you up this bonus piece of trivia. Regarding the DC-3, history. My mother's eldest of her 2 brothers, Billy. He was an incredible automotive mechanic.. As the family owned a Texaco gas station in downtown Hollywood California. Where you can't have, bad mechanics. Unfortunately my uncle Bill was 4F. For the World War II effort in the military. So he told their father. He was going to leave the Texaco station and move east. Like, Washington DC. To see what he could do for the effort. He got this cool job as a mechanic. He was chief mechanic. Working on a DC-3. For this guy by the name of, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Before it was called Air Force One. Because we didn't have an Air Force except in the Army. And my uncle was the first chief mechanic. For the first airplane. For the President of the United States. In history. That's how important and significant and still to this day. The history of the DC-3. My only question. What airplane manufacturer made the, fighter plane for the, Covid-19 war? I'm sorry. I am not quite as edgemucated as you are. RemyRAD

I sure do love the C-47/DC-3’s! Lee County Florida used to have about a dozen of them, used for mosquito spraying. They’d fly 2- or 3 at a time in formation, floating slow-n-low just above the trees. Whenever you’d hear the rumble of those engines approaching, it was hard not to stop what you were doing and watch those birds glide by. 😍

Wow, Operation Deadstick! I've read all about it, and it's an amazing action! What exactly did your grandfather do? I hope you asked him to tell you everything he could remember, and recorded it or wrote it down! There are only a handful of first hand accounts. The glider landings and attacks are legendary, and the way the men held out at the bridges over the Orne and the Caen Canal is staggering, especially because they could not bring heavy weapons with them!
@crazybrit-nasafan
@crazybrit-nasafan 4 года назад
@@etangdescygnes Grandad Wilson hardly ever spoke of the war. The only time he mentioned the raid was that they were pinned down by what he thought may have been a Tiger tank, that was taken out be a rocket. He did not say if it was an anti tank PIAT or from a Typhoon. The only other time I remember him speak of his service was when he told me what it felt like to sneak up behind a German sentry, he put the garrotte wire around his neck whilst another soldier grabbed his gun. He told me what it was like feeling the life slip from that man who he never knew but had killed. Needless to say I did not try to join the Army. That was his intention, to put me off joining up. Just remembered two other times he told me of his service. One was being busted for fishing whilst on duty, using a hand Grenade and a row boat. The other he got the hatless interview with the CO was for knocking an officer out on the parade ground.

For a transport category a/c with two engines, I rather jump from a twin Otter, a CASA 222 or a Shorts. For a static line jump, the DC-3/C-47 just has too much history to ignore. Another, would be the AN-2 (a big piston single).

Jato bottle story. Twin Beeches had jato bottles in the nacelles, if you lost an engine close to the ground you could fire the bottle and get enough altitude to make a safe landing. Jato bottles had an expiration date and had to be replaced, so a maintenance outfit in Minneapolis would put the bottles on a steel plate on the back of a Massey Harris tractor, hold the brakes and fire the bottles. One day the brakes let go and the tractor went for a rocket ride across the airport. I don't know what the top speed of that tractor was supposed to be, but I'm sure it set a record!

A story told to me lately by a friend who has just passed away who flew Hurricanes in the Battle of Britain - 'after that battle I was sent to Shobden Airfield to train pilots who would be towing gliders. We used Westland Lysanders and one day, I was asked to tow a glider full of top brass civilians. Unfortunately, after glider release something went wrong and the glider made a poor landing, ripping its floor open. Nobody died but there were many serious feet/leg injuries!' Another reason why development probably stopped was gliders were a very risky form of military transport. I'll go so far to say the bravest pilots in WW2 flew gliders. It's like entering a soap box derby car in a demolition derby. Converting a DC3 would have been a significant upgrade from what was in the field. It was clear that more efficient ways to deliver cargo and troops were necessary to develop after WW2.

The ATC controllers in Detroit used to keep us at altitude till the last minute for approach and really piss us off in 1986/87. We'd drop the gear and ask for vectors to make a slower descent to keep from supercooling the engines. Yes, it was a big powered glider.

In Flight Sim it's a hard aircraft to land because it doesn't want to come down! I'm not surprised that the real thing is such a wonderful design.

"Don't waste your time looking back son, you're not going that way anyways" ~ Wink-Wink Nod-Nod like a black and white fake-book memory, MY memory ... lol. Wait, What? Too much Mikey, love the dual-boom air-tank, GCX-16 was it. Ain't no G-21 but what is, what is ... Friggin NO OSHKOSH this year and yet last year had the unannounced time off, car, cash but no pass-port or plan and gosh-damn-darn-it ~ DTD ~ was there. A MAJOR attraction from what I heard. Keep the stellar videos coming good sir. Also, the long since ago painted oil painting, "Stuka the Dog" will be liberated soon. Stupid economy collapsing flu-bug
