Was the Empire Actually Good? Were the Rebels Terrorists? Star Wars Lore Explained

Was the Galactic Empire good? Were the Rebels actually terrorists? Those are the questions that we'll be considering on today's Star Wars Lore video!
Is it true that the Empire did nothing wrong?
Star Wars fans have long called the Rebel Alliance terrorists, citing the destruction of the first Death Star, and the millions of civilian lives lost. Some have similarly pointed out that the Galactic Empire actually has brought peace to the Star Wars Galaxy. Is the Empire really the good guys, and were the Rebels the bad guys? I'll be giving my opinion on today's Star Wars Lore video!

Actually the Republic was pretty corrupt too. They had a policy of "you're with us or against us" and were very messed up when it came to dealing with separatist ideals

But the empire was worse then the republic. At least they arent xenophobic in comparision to the Republic was. And accuse anyone for 'treason' and enforcing unlawful things that took everyones rights away. Something the republic (in the time) didnt do (canonical wise) Plus destroying planets was the time of the empire killing innocent men women and children who didnt knew of the rebel activity more proof the empire are dictating space nazis. And one thing, look at their actions, its not rebel propaganda or terror if its the truth of the empires terrorist opressive actions

@@miguelquarles9030 The two Death Stars had more non combatants on board, than the combined population of Alderaan and Jedha. Speciesism is a healthy human reaction too, and the Empire created millions of jobs for people in need of one. Aaand the Jedi were basically the Star Wars equivalent of central-african warlords, just more dangerous since they were working for a government and wrote their own press, although this problem got dealt with by Lord Vader.

@Sergente A the Holy Roman Empire had an emperor, and it had elector states that would choose a new emperor. The smaller states were a part of it but if they weren't electors they wouldn't have much of a say unless they revolted, there were nation states in the HRE and not senators. Really it is based more off the Roman Republic, the Roman Republic is where we get the idea of a senate in which their are elected senators that debate over issues. The Roman Republic also suffered from a lot of corruption, and rich patricians had the say while poor commoners did not have a say. TL;DR They're a republic, not a democracy, and they're not an oligarchy either as there is only one chancellor who is the head of the republic, not two or more. The senators have a say but do not work together in ruling the republic.

I support the empire and here are my counter arguments 1. Although unchecked democracy works on a backwater world like sole 3, the Republic gave power to corrupt people, that let senators focus on themselves rather than the people 2. Alderaan was supplying the rebels, while I agree that Alderaan's destruction was horrible and I don't support it, however It was like the bombing of Hiroshima, it was done to disarm the rebels and to force them to surrender before a bigger war starts that kills millions more than the people of Alderaan 3. People where only not allowed to own guns or ships in areas that had a lot of violence, this was to lessen the danger to stormtroopers as well to prevent civilian casualties 4. In Rebels season 1 we see people talk bad about the empire such as old Joe, and the Imperial stormtroopers just take the insult, the only time stormtroopers ever gave people trouble was if they tried to bribe a stormtrooper or sell illegal stuff also illegal in our world" or if they where,not registered( the only reason they had to was to prevent people from secretly selling weapons and drugs that can harm civilians) 5. As A Thrawn supporter I DONT APPROVE OF AILEAN SLAVERY, however if the rebels never existed than Thrawn would of been able to change it, and The galaxy is a big place there are races that want to kill all humans, it is possible for aliens that eat human children meat to survive exists and if that is the case it is a must to see that whole alien race wiped out to save human lives) ( though I'd love to know what you think about that example) 6. The reason the empire took over the galaxy wasn't just to control it but to United it, when every planet was under its own rule they where still divided and that led to the clone wars, a galaxy United under one banner is a galaxy that won't fight itself 7. Speciesism wasn't created by the empire, thanks to corrupt senators it was already imbedded into the minds of people, for the empire to put an end to it would be to take away the right of free speech Now let's talk about the Rebels and why in my personal opinion where in the wrong 1. In return of the Jedi that used 3po they threaten the Ewoks with death if they didn't let Luke go, this would be justified if the rebels stoped there and went on with there mission but instead they threatened to wipe them out unless they fought the Empire. The rebels used the innocent, but delicious Ewoks as body shields, the Empire on the other hand avoided the Ewoks villages to avoid disturbing the locals and only shoot at the Ewoks in self-defense 2. After Luke escaped Jabba's barge he blew it up, however all the bad guys on board where already dead, the only people still on where slaves, so Luke murdered people without remorse 3. they helped and accepted help from Saw who was a known war criminal 4. They helped the Jedi, a cult that kidnaped and brainwashed children, and used those children as child soldiers 5. The rebels let 14 year old kids fight, the empire only let 18 year olds fight However I don't think the Rebels are evil, the Empire still has evil, but the Rebels are unknowingly getting into Thrawn's way and stoping him from peacefully changing the Empire

The thing is that Palpatine was a sociopath and made many other sociopaths high-ranking officers of the Empire. But after his death, Thrawn and Pellaeon were definitely good leaders of the Empire though Thrawn did do continue some questionable practices with the Noghri. Then the best leader of the Empire was Jagged Fel and his successors, as they were firm but fair and allowed the Imperial Knights, a middle of the road though light-side leaning Force User organization, to keep the peace as was necessary. So, yes, Palpatine's Empire was definitely bad, however the later leaders such as Thrawn and Pellaeon (with the exception of Daala) made the Empire a respectable and decent organization.

When was the last time authoritarianism worked in reality though? Free enterprise capitalism hasn't been particularly good for the people participating but it is a step up from slavery, racial subjugation, full bureaucratic control leading to supply chain failure, etc. I don't like either for the record, my point is that changing who has complete power instead of spreading that power out doesn't work. It only worked with Julius Caeser and he still committed genocide, his rule only worked for Romans.

Can u rly call alderann a peaceful planet when the government secretly send ships to aid the rebellion. And their princess next ruler of alderann is a rebel. Don't cut the rebels too short to an extent they were terriorists, the partisans would blow up moffs even if there were hundreds of children. So at the same time they made the rebels look bad and gave imperials a reason to fight. And the rebel allowed their own to kill hundreds of innocents I remember reading mothma in the aftermath trilogy getting tired of waiting for senators. And referred to palpatine ruling doing something control. This is probably why the new republic got destroyed by the first order because of the senators taking a long time to do anything.

While I guess it does for the definition of fascism, the empire always reminded me more of older colonial empires like the Dutch and the British empires then the new model fascism of the 1930's. They were not just xenophobic to aliens but outer rim humans were dismissed like the colonials and although they styled themselves as militarized they really only mobilised a small fraction of the potential resources they could of had available due to a lack of infrastructure and technology to build and maintain such a military. The semistate-owned nature of large industry monopolies does describe both.

The Empire itself was not evil but its leader was. I think that the Empire is actually much better than the Republic as the Republic is unable to effectivly control the galaxy and is far to corrput. The Empire was more effective but had a very, very, VERY evil emperor. Fel is an example of how the emperor should be. And the Rebels were terrorists, they used violence and threats to achive a political goal and that is what a terrorist does. It doesn't matter if they are good or not nor what their goal or reasons are. Using violence and threats to achive a political or religious (which was the case for Luke and other rebel Jedi) goal makes you a terrorist

If the Rebels are still good despite being terrorists, then what does it matter that they are terrorists? Also, I'm pretty sure a terrorist is defined as someone who tries to generate fear/terror, usually through targeting civilians, in order to intimidate people into meeting their demands. The Rebels are pretty much the opposite of this; While I can't speak for every single Rebel Cell (Saw Gerrera's Partisans committed terrorism, for instance), the main Alliance made a point to only attack military targets, and more often than not, actually ended up defending civilians from state terrorism committed by the Empire (The Tarkin Doctrine is literally "rule through fear", and it was implemented).

I have to disagree with you. I am in no way condoning Palpatine's actions, however, they may be partially justified. I will be using the Legends continuity, and the Yuuzan Vong to prove a point. Imposing a dictatorial régime was not a bad decision, because it would prevent the people from rebelling and weakening the galaxy before the Vong invasion. Nationalising many companies brought along a stable economy, and controlling the market meant an even better economy that would fuel the Imperial war machine. The xenophobia was imposed to somewhat justify alien slavery, but that doesn't make it right. The Senate was, even during the Republic, a corrupt and weak organisation, run by idiots and sell-outs to the highest bidder. By dissolving it, Palpatine ensured that none would oppose his reforms to defend against the Vong. Plus, not all imperials were evil, some were good and some were true realists (Thrawn) which saw the Empire as a short-term solution. Thrawn wanted to replace the Emperor with a fair, if not partially democratic, ruler, and Palpatine would certainly not live forever. Again, I am not supporting Palpatine, but I can justify his actions from an impartial point of view.

I don't necessarily disagree about the empire being a morally evil government (at least as it's portrayed) however the Republic before was far from a shining beacon of democracy as it is generally portrayed (which is established within canon) 1. rampant corruption was commonplace throughout all aspects of government across the galaxy. 2. As there was no centralized military until the clone wars, systems relied on "local militias" to protect individual systems, and tbh most of these "militias" would be just gangs of criminals or mercenaries who only answered to money. 3. The republic was an authoritarian who did not respect the rights of their smaller member nations, and focused most policies toward the core systems and the corporations who bankrolled various politicians, this is why the CIS attempted to break away from the Republic and form their own galactic coalition. 4. While not as pronounced as in the Empire, speciesism was still very commonplace throughout the Republic, and the slave trade was merely underground, but still a thriving business. Now did the rebels have a novel and righteous cause? Yes, however they were still terrorists, and in all reality did more harm to innocent civilians, and imperial employees just trying to make things better, rather than the actual evil leaders of the government. Furthermore the empire would in all likelihood need to reform into a more fair and mellow government, however the rebellion only further justified the harsh conditions employed by the Empire. (Remember that the empire was formed right off the back of a galactic civil war, and at least half the nation's in the known galaxy harbored huge resentments against the Republic/Empire because they lost)
@CedarHunt
@CedarHunt 6 лет назад
The Republic isn't even really portrayed as a shining beacon of democracy either. They make it pretty clear from the first movie going forward that the average citizen has effectively zero say in any government decisions. Most of the planets and systems we see represented in the Republic senate were at best constitutional monarchies where the leadership role is inherited and senators are appointed. If we're talking about Canon then look at the conflict on Onderon from the Clone Wars TV show as an example: it's about supplanting a puppet king who supported the CIS with ANOTHER king, nowhere do they even hint at the idea of elections or the will of the people, they just decide they know what the people want and what they want is a different unelected ass in a throne. Does that sound like the actions of a shining beacon of liberty and democracy to you?

The problem with the empire isn't the empire itself, it's the leaders. The ideals of the empire are ok. A strong government that can actually enforce its laws. A strong leader who can quickly pass greatly needed l laws without having to wait for months for the senate to do anything. A military that can police the Galaxy, putting down pirates and criminal scum. Ik legends the imperial remnant and fel empire are good bc actually enforcing most of the empires ideals but with good leaders meant that they were actually good. Hell the reason the fel empire became so powerful despite originally being a small rump state was they were stable and prosperous where as the New Republic and Galactic Alliance were plagued by corruption, incompetence, and political scandals. World after world left and joined the empire bc they could get shit done.

Have to disagree. The Empire was not good, especially if you look at it from the point of view of the many Alien species in the Star Wars Galaxy. many of whom were sold into slavery, used as slaves to work on Imperial projects like the Death Star. Very few aliens achieved high rank within the Empire; Grand Admiral Thrawn & Mas Amedda among them. Another downside of the Empire, the lack of women in the Imperial Navy & Army; aside from a few like, Daala, Governor Pryze (if this spelt is wrong I apologise). When you compare this to the Rebels they didn't discriminate against aliens or women. The Rebels had many female soldiers, pilots, mechanics, etc... The Empire goal was peace at any cost, and that never works. Peace at any cost isn't Peace - At best it's only a temporary ceasefire. The Empire was always going to fall one way or another. Liberty & Freedom are worth fighting for against a Corrupt and Tyrannical Empire. Saw Guerra's Insurgents aren't counted as part of the official rebellion due to them being extremists (they are Terrorists) as they care not for civilian life as Rogue One showed when Saw's Insurgents opened fire in a crowded marketplace & Jyn shielded a little girl.

That's because fascism's core belief is that total war is not only inevitable but desirable. As war and conflict are seen as the only method of cultural and technological evolution. Everything they do is to help in the coming or on going war. Or as noted real life fascist Kai Murros put it, "For us war is the logical culmination of evolution. For us politics is secondary to war. For us politics is just a prelude to war. All the great questions of our time can and will be solved through war."

Blatantly not true. In fact, Nazi Germany was noted as begin highly inefficient in the way they ran the war, and in fact, all three of the major axis states ran the war very inefficiently. Its one of the main reasons why they lost. Facism is not necessarily more efficient. And in many cases, the head rule in charge of a facist state often deliberately makes thing inefficient so as to prevent anyone else from consolidating enough political power to challenge his or her rule. In fact Hitler did this exact thing in order to prevent anyone form challenging his rule. Stalin did it too. If you look at WW2 objectively, the one whom ran the whole thing more efficiently than anyone else, was the US. America mobilized its resources and personnel far more efficiently than any other participant in WW2. Of course there is no way that America could do it now, we have since lost that capability, but the point still stands, being facist does not make things efficient.
@SuperRavensblood
@SuperRavensblood 6 лет назад
You realize that Axis started the war out numbered, out gunned, and in terrible strategic position. I mean Germany just recovered from near economic collapse. Yet they were still able to conquer almost all of continental Europe, North Africa, and a huge chunk of China and Southeast Asia. All while waging their U-boat campaign in the Atlantic. Moreover they were able to keep their war machines running while being bombed into the ground. While the USA was out of range and thus could churn out tanks and equipment unhindered so of course we were more efficient in that regard. Under the circumstances the Axis were very efficient, especially in the early years of the war.

"Terrorists" by definition target civilians and non-military assets (bombing a hospital, cyberattacks that cripple the economy, etc) with the intent of causing *terror* in the population. This can be done to either cripple an enemy nation, intimidate your own people into submission, or make a government appear weak and unable to protect its citizens. Saw Guerera's Partisans were terrorists. They massacred a party celebrating the inauguration of an Imperial governor, not discriminating between civilian and military targets or even between supporters and non-supporters of the Empire. The First Order are terrorists. They used money laundered through crime cartels to fund groups that carried out bombings on non-military political targets in the New Republic, and ultimately destroyed an entire star system to make a political point. The *Empire* were terrorists. Grand Moff Tarkin's philosophy, along with that of most of the Imperial leadership, on dealing with insurgency and rebellion was to strike fear into the hearts of Imperial citizens so that they would not dare disobey. Alderaan is, of course, the prime example of this. The Alliance to Restore the Republic was not a terrorist organization. It exclusively targeted military assets like the first and second Death Stars, Skystrike Academy, Imperial shipyards at Kuat and Fondor, military bases on Lothal and Endor, and many more examples. They would, at times, kill unarmed people; however, this was done not to inspire fear and destabilize the non-military infrastructure, but rather to complete a mission successfully, escape with their own lives, deprive the Imperial military of one of its military scientists, or would otherwise be a necessary consequence of self-defense and justified military engagement (i.e. any non-combatants who died on the Death Stars).They used guerrilla tactics that we, westerners whose military is by far the largest and most advanced in the world today, identify with terrorism, but that by no means makes them anything even somewhat resembling terrorists, unintentional civilian casualties aside.

So them wanting to live is a justified reason to kill someone? I bet everyone on the Death Star wanted to live, so the destruction of Alderaan is justified? They're terrorists fighting a democratically installed government. Look at the early Republic era of Rome, and the office of Dictator. The Republic's leader was nearly assassinated by a cult that was famous for child soldiers, it was a time of dire need for proper leadership, not that of the corrupt Galactic Republic. I'm honestly trying to figure out where the meme ends and the genuine support of a regime that the universe's omniscient narrator regularly describes as "evil" begins. You understand exactly what I am saying and why the Alderaan (argument? strawman?) is nonsense, so I'm not touching that. This isn't ancient Rome. The Old Republic Senate and the Jedi were corrupt, yes, and the Empire arguably served a purpose in burning it away. That said, we don't know to what extent they had become corrupt and stagnant on their own, and to what extent the Sith had manipulated them into that position over the past thousand years to gain power. It could very easily be argued that, had the Sith actually been destroyed a millennium ago, none of the problems within the Senate or the Jedi Council would have existed. And even if they would have, then the Empire served a purpose in clearing it away so it could then be replaced by a better system. That better system isn't the Empire; it's the New Republic and the New Jedi Order. As a matter of fact, I do, because if an anti-fascist movement had killed the Nazi leaders in Germany in the early-mid 30s, before anyone understood what they were, the world we live in today would be an objectively better place. I don't see how that's relevant, though, unless you're bringing real world politics into this and unironically supporting a fascist dictatorship that blows up planets full of civilians by saying "well what about when the good guys blew up the big blower-upper weapon?"

The problem with both Legends and canon is they've portrayed The Republic as an essentially useless political entity. I mean, in all seriousness, it simply looks like a stodgy bureaucratic nightmare with loads of corrupt and self-interested politicians who don't actually fucking DO anything. I mean, it's quite astonishing how this 'UN in space' never seems to be put to good use. In the OT we are told about the Republic as if it represents a 'Golden Age' and then we see it in the prequels and it's a den of wankers. Honestly, if you want me to care about the Rebels cause, let me at least see why this Republic is supposed to be a good thing - rather than just relying on abstract principles like 'democracy' and 'rule of law'. Then, we learn from the new canon novels that the Republic is finally restored and within a few years it's already broken down in to factions and in-fighting. WTF? If you're not going to show the audience why the Republic is such a great thing, don't be surprised if they don't understand why they should care about it. Palpatine may have been a nasty fucking tyrant but he managed to achieve more in a few years than the Republic did in bloody hundreds.

'The Galactic Empire was bad'. All you ever did in the video was talk about the bad things the Empire did, but you never looked at EVERYTHING the Rebels did. Rebel attacks destroyed infrastructure (bad for the economy), and killed more civilians than the Empire ever did (Death Stars, bombing runs, etc). For each Death Star destroyed, the galactic economy takes a bit of a dive. And when Palpatine is killed, the economy and stock market both hit zero at the same time as total anarchy hits. Take total anarchy from a country here on earth, and scale it up to galactic level! I haven't bothered to go into full detail yet, but you can be quite sure that the Rebels were still worse than the Empire. Please add to this or make counter-arguments, because I'm hoping to get a solid Empire vs Rebels debate here.

Well this is a point of view, but I disagree to some extent. At first Alderan was never "peaceful" as is shown in new canon even more open than ever before. Bail Organa did take part in high rank meeting of the rebels and said in the end of the meeting he would return and tell the people that the war will continue. His daughter did send even before ships to terrorists in rebels (and Bail did help terrorist cells with weapon and money etc.). The Empire did also let at least some degree of freedom to the local government to run their own things. Alderan was never under direct Imperial rule, and governments like this kingdom could run a lot of things the way they want. The Empire did let subgroups a lot of freedom if they were no threat and cooperate. The Senate existet for nearly 20 years before Palpatine removed him, what may be also due to the role several senetors played in the rise of the rebellion. What is also ignored is that the Empire crush on local pirate bands and supress civil wars (in legends it is hintet that they re-occur at once after the fall of the Empire, and if the new canon would be honest, it would be similar). Also to call the Empire fascist is difficult. They have not a stringent ideology which is nearly similar to fascism (and even less to national-socialism). There is much less try to mobilize the people in youth- and adult-organisazions, there is no "imperial party" or something like that. They did use propaganda, yes, but much more in the way of "ordinary" authoritarian states. There is rascism, but rascism is nothing specific fascist (we had in human history a lot of empires, states and democracies/republics who were rascist to a extent eaquel or maybe even beyond the Empire you hardly could call them fascist). What connect the Empire to fascism is mainly optical - the uniforms etc. If you go to the core of fascism and national socialism as ideologies you find a lot of different things (which make them - especial the German kind - in my eyes much more dangerous, radical and brutal). A national-socialist government of the scale of the Galaxy would be a VERY different thing. Also I have to add that Thrawn was by far not the only Alien who could rise in the ranks of the Empire. Mas Amedda was one of Palpatines most trusted allys, and the emporer had zero problems with his alien inquisitors. I guess this are just examples among others.

I disagree. I say instead of 100% rotten, the Empire was 80% rotten. The core worlds are a huge exception to the Empire's evil. I know, I know, the Outer Rim was super oppressed and the rebels were somewhat justified in that regard. But the Imperials who truly believed in the Empire and weren't trying to or partaking in horrible acts were good people. Still, with the core world exceptions, the insane evil of the Empire in the Outer Rim makes the Empire evil overall. But the rebels were still mostly terrorists. Connor O'Brien The problem is that Vader always went his way. Vader would almost never stop or listen to anyone unless Palpatine or Tarkin stepped up. He would choke or kill anyone that would speak back. Also, if an Imperial made a simple mistake, Vader would usually kill them, even if it was Vader's felt for giving them bad orders. The fact that Vader could kill you at any moment made those working under him nervous all the time, which inevitably would make them make a mistake.Many Moffs and goveners disliked Vader because of this; many people in power were not loyal to Vader at all. Vader also had a habit of being easy to lure out if anything involved Jedi or Luke. Heck, Xizor would easily make Vader run in circles by outsmarting him. Sidious would do the same. Vader has been outsmarted many times. Vader is a soldier, not a leader.

The Empire, under Sith rule, was evil. However, I do believe the galaxy needs an Imperial rule. That's why I absolutely LOVE the Fel Empire. It took away a lot of the evil flaws that the original Galactic Empire had. It removed the Sith rule (though the Emperor, at least Roan Fel, was typically Force-sensitive and trained to wield a lightsaber), it removed the xenophobia, it gave citizens more rights, etc. I REALLY hope that Disney brings back the Fel Empire or at least turns the First Order into an empire more like the Fel Empire. As a monarchist and a HUGE Star Wars fan, it's disappointing to see that no one even stops for a moment to consider the possibility that if you had an Empire not under Sith rule, it'd be a LOT better.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of YoloSwagMemeLord{THOT-DESTROYER} The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Mods would tell you. It’s a Lit legend. YoloSwagMemeLord{THOT-DESTROYER} was a Dank Lord of the Lit, so powerful and so wise he could use the memes to influence the Mods to create bots and alt accounts… He had such a knowledge of the dank memes that he could even keep the ones he cared about from being banned. The dank side of the Memes is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his memes, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his fams everything he knew, then Ackbar the Almighty banned him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from ban, but not himself.

Now, if the Rebels hadn’t existed, there would be no widespread violence in the galaxy. Ep. IV: The Rebels cause the death and destruction of a planet and many cultures. The sheer stupidity of the terrorist leaders cause them to give away their base’s position. This also happened because of the wit of the Imperial commanders. During the Battle of Yavin, the Rebels killed 1.1 million plus troops. These men had families, now ruined families. Ep. V: During the Battle of Hoth, the clumsiness of the same Rebel leader caused the Empire to find the Rebel base. The Empire steamrolled across the barren wasteland. Next, at Cloud City, Bespin, Darth Vader shows mercy to the clumsy Rebel leader, by inviting him to dinner. The leader impolitely declined the offer, and fought back. The greatness of Darth Vader defeated him. Vader’s son decided to disobey his father. His father showed his son even more mercy. Ep. VI: The terrorists dragged the sidelined planet of Tatooine into the war. They attacked the home of a citizen of Tatooine, in hopes of saving one person. They injured Boba Fett for Pete’s sake! Then, they move to yet another massacre of Imperial employees at Endor. During the battle, they killed another 1.1 million plus soldiers. Heck, they killed Darth Vader!This is unacceptable for manly warfare. They need to sit and be humble.

Well, this is a very interesting topic, here's my take on it: the republic had a corrupt leader, which led to him seizing power (like many dictators in real life) and creating a fashist dictatorship, the empire had a full military government aswell and it was a pity that such a big nation would fall to with corruption, but to me honestly no side was correct the rebels were just another group that fought for their political interests just like the CIS and the Empire no one is the real hero (just like in real life)

I think that without the Sith influence within the republic and Sith hands orchestrating galactic scale events. The republic could have possibly worked. there were many senators and peoples on both sides of the clone war that wished for the fighting to stop but the actual villains (The Mega-corporations and Sith) Needed the fighting for greater profits and political influence. hence the attack on Coruscant in the clone wars series

Destroying Alderaan is NOT equivilant to the bombings in WWII. Those were military targets, factories, bases, deployment areas. The damage to civilian centers at the time were a result of the limited technical precision of bombs at the time. It was literally just fly over the target and hope the bomb didn't drift too far away. Even the atomic bomb drops on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were aimed at major production and deployment hubs. Alderaan was none of these things. They had no weapons. No military presence. No choice. It'd be like if the US had bombed the country of France into glass when they refused to invade Iraq.

The Republic was just as corrupt as the Empire, the Empire was just open and honest about it, and the Jedi had completely lost their way.
