In this lecture, Professor Kevin Ruane (Canterbury Christ Church University) explores Harry S. Truman’s decision to use the atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. What (if any) alternatives were available to Truman at this time? What were his justifications for using a weapon that would cause such enormous levels of (civilian) death and destruction?
