I am 64 years of age and have watched some of the greatest golfers over many years. Times and technology have changed enormously and who knows what some of the greats would be doing on social media today, but there is no doubt that Bryson is bringing golf to the masses via his RU-vid channel. His enthusiasm and passion is infectious and there is no doubt he will encourage more people and youngsters to play golf, about time he was applauded and recognised for what he is doing.

I think y’all missed an opportunity to discuss Bryson’s resilience in his last round. Yes, it’s easy to notice Rory’s collapse, but on a day Bryson’s driver was terrible to his standards, his play around the greens was incredible compared to the field. He had three big moments where he could’ve let the tournament really get away from him, but he rose to the challenge. Obviously the up and down at 18 was something that’ll be remembered for years, but the other two in my mind were equally important for the big picture. The hole where he went over the back of the green and chose to putt it back up the hill and left it very short and sideways, leaving him a long putt that he made was one moment. The other was on #8 where the announcers basically said he was screwed, yet he made an incredible up and down there as well. As much as everyone wants to talk about Rory’s collapse, give Bryson credit. He came in clutch on some very difficult wedge shots and putts.

Yes I agree. There is an element of Rory throwing it away but that last hole Bryson showed true grit, determination and skill in 4 shots. As much as I'm gutted to see Rory lose I was elated to see bryson hit that sand shot and have the balls to sink the but. 4 yrs ago I turned the TV off if he was on it, now I follow him on RU-vid. Just shows that with a bit of guidance and self assessment we can all be better people.

16:33 Bryson's caddie gave him the confidence to hit that bunker shot. I think Rory doesn't have the ability to take that kind of advice and adjust his mindset in the moment. People talk about Rory missing 2 shorter putts (Bryson missed one as well), but forget that he made numerous long birdie putts on Sunday that put him in position to win. Ultimately, Bryson made the shots to win. No shame in 2nd place. Jack Nicklaus finished 2nd in majors 19 times!

I watched the podcast earlier and was disappointed in your minimal analysis/review of Bryson Dechambeau's victory. In particular his four rounds. Of course there are two stories here. McIlroy's struggles in particular. But I thought ample time was given there. But Dechambeau won in amazing fashion and his style of play is unique: his driver, iron, putting style. His final round was incredible in that he changed the driver head at the last minute and his scrambling was perfection in an impossible golf course. Truly epic in that regard. Consider reviewing that in detail in your next podcast. His popularity is increasing and all fans would like your takes on that.
@kennethbnorris
@kennethbnorris 12 дней назад
I couldn’t agree more with this post. They really missed this completely. The resilience and clutch moments in the short game shown by Bryson was phenomenal on a day where his driver left him. The hole where he went long and tried to putt back up the hill and left himself a long putt for par, which he made, was big. Then on hole #8, the announcers basically said he was screwed, yet he makes an incredible up and down. And of course, obviously 18 will be remembered for years. That’s why I love the US Open. Annually the hardest test in golf where someone has to rise to the challenge like no other. Rick, Guy, you missed the mark here.

Bryson got it done with a 55 yard bunker shot that could have easily gone over the green on 18. Rory was celebrating too soon and did not focus on the putt. Remember Rory thought Bryson was a "circus act" when he left for LIV? BD is a class act and the fans NOW love him. BD feeds off the crowds and we need to see more of him. Rory will recover and be a better player. The healing will be uphill because the media will rip the scab off to remind him he left way too early. The missed putt will be a character builder and recovery will be his owning this and self awareness. Most are not saying this, but Bryson was in a mental state grinding and not get impatient or upset. Rory was in a zone that evaporated last 4 holes and he couldn't wrap his head around the change. Great talk as usual and what a golf course! Cannot wait for The Open in July. I hope Bryson stops by and interviews with you two.

I was hopeful for a playoff at the PGA, but didn’t really believe it would happen. Xander did make it slightly interesting, but I wasn’t surprised he made the putt on 18. Scheffler made watching the back nine of The Masters relatively dull. Pinehurst was different level edge of your seat. Even when Rory pulled two ahead, I felt anything could happen. When he had that downhill slider on 18, I knew that wasn’t a gimme. Everyone wants to say he choked on that putt, but that was no easy putt. If anything, he made the mistake on the chip and leaving it above the hole. Follow that up with Bryson getting up and down from a bunker that literally no one had been able to do all week, I was exhausted in a good way just from watching. Best tournament I’ve seen in years.

I can understand why you would assume that pressure was the reason for the short misses, but maybe it isn't that simple. The putt on 18 was a short putt, but it had a ton of break and was lightning quick, easy to see how anyone could miss that in any situation. The one on 16 was a straighter putt, but maybe it just didn't do what he thought it was going to do. While I'm sure pressure was part of the equation, it is also quite possible that the trickiness of the greens played a big part. Bryson also missed a short par putt on the back nine, but we can all agree that he handled the pressure quite well.

@@outlander234 I'm not saying it's not a component, but to say it was all down to pressure is wrong IMO. The course is playing very hard and the greens were tricky, especially from the spot he was leaving himself (especially on 18). On 16 he missed his approach just a bit left and ended up short sided in the bunker, somehow got it 4 feet, but missed the putt. could have been the pressure, but the putt may have also just not done what he expected (this happens). On 18 he simply left himself with a devilish little putt that he could potentially miss regardless of the situation as it had like a foot of break in that 3 foot putt.

I'm as big a cynic as anymore when it comes to Rory in the majors, but even I thought he had it with 4/5 holes left. Two things happened in the final round of a major that haven't happened for Rory in recent times-he was holing putts and his opponent blinked first when Bryson three putted 15. That, combined with Rory being safely on 16th green, was when I thought Rory had it. What happened after that point will live with me for a while. The only ways I see Rory winning one now is by building up a huge, insurmountable lead over rounds 1-3 or by setting a score and later groups falter similar to Ben Curtis or Geoff Ogilvy.

A hard tournament like the U.S. Open is important because it separates itself from other events. You cannot just simply overpower the course with insane length and give yourself easy scoring opportunities almost every whole. It makes you HAVE to find the fareway, HAVE to find the RIGHT part of the green, and Par is a good score and the best putters will get enough birdies to give themselves a chance to win. It tests the Entire game from Tee to Green.

I have to disagree with Rick on the -6 vs -20 commentary. The US Open is supposed to be extremely hard and favor the guys who strike the ball and putt well. This was a perfect example of that. We can debate for hours about getting lucky vs unlucky with the lies, but it makes hitting the fairway THAT much more important. Let’s also not forget that Bryson hit one dead down the center on one and found a divot. Personally, I believe this past week was a true show of overall skill in every facet of the game….. including 3 foot putts.

I still think Rory will be considered a huge underperformer for his talent level in the era he played in if he wins one more major. He didn’t face Tiger in his prime or Jack. He had ten good years before Scottie emerged and has nothing to show for it.

@@NotAllWhoWanderAreLost641underperformer with 5 majors?That's a bit of a stretch imo..He didn't face Jack or tiger but he faced Jordan spieth, morikawa, DJ,Garcia or koepka and those during their hot streak would be a challenge to ANYONE, tiger woods included! I think ya'll forgot the record numbers some of those guys shot when they won. Rory McIlroy is an UNBELIEVABLE player, unfortunately for him so are some of this guys and getting sht for "only " 🤣 winning FOUR MAJORS is an absolute joke. Phil got one in his 50's too,which is one more than a good handful of former world number ones.One of this days those putts that keep missing will fall and that's all it takes, last us open Bryson won he was making putts from 50 feet off the green and then he went on to several straight missed cuts and 5 footers, you just need your A game and a bit of luck on Sundays and rory's not getting it atm. Look at Billy horschel at punta cana recently, sometimes you find it when it matters and rory McIlroy McIlroy wich is ALWAYS in the mix will eventually find it,tiger took an 11 year break too, and so did Phil Mickelson

I think it is pure speculation if Rory had hit a three wood off the tee at the 18th whether that would have put him in a position to par the whole for a playoff. I listened to Paul McGinley On another channel debating with another commentator. Rory wants it’s so much he played some poor shots contrary to the mindset that got him to that position. He is such a good player, probably a great player in terms of history, I think he needs to think of actually winning a major by trusting his game and being himself. It looks like he made a change to win in style and messed it up, perhaps a stronger input from a caddie, but overall it’s his decision and he needs to trust his game, because it is certainly good enough for more majors.

I used to be a pro caddy before moving to another part of the golf industry. There’s a couple ways to go about the psychological side of game management with a player. More than I could mention. Everyone is different. If you are giving good shots and advice consistently that’s the biggest thing you can do to help your golfer psychologically. If they can trust your opinion, so much of everything else falls into place. The elite caddies are often the ones who work with professionals for long stretches of time and can learn their players’ tics and behavior patterns, and can learn all the right stuff to say and when. I studied psychology for a time in school and honestly I feel it really helped with my caddying. I’d always keep a very positive emphasis on everything. Saying things like “when you carry the water” or more direct forms of encouragement. I avoid saying stuff like “you don’t want to miss left” but rather “right is the place to miss” and not even mention the left unless directly. My goal was always to focus golfers on the positive aspects. It worked really well in my opinion. With the pros chemistry is such a big factor if there’s talk in Rory’s camp about getting a new caddy then I’d be willing to bet they’re not seeing eye to eye on things. Pros don’t just change caddies so easily. If he can get a new caddy that can instill confidence and positivity in him, the chemistry and everything else will come with time.

Rory and Bryson were absolute Fan favorites on Championship Sunday. Both had loud chants from the crowd. With that said Rory's last chip on the 18th was the decider, if it wasn't going in the hole, he should've left it short to give himself an easier straight uphill putt instead of a slick left to right. Now is that down to his caddie perhaps needing to reassure Rory during the most critical of moments and under extreme pressure to just play to the percentage and secure a par on the last hole?
@arcc4

That's always easy to say after the fact. The truth is the hardest thing to do is to go from being an aggressive chaser to a risk managing leader who has to face the headwind of controlling the match. Do I stick with what got me here? Do I switch gears and play safe? 'Choking' derives from doubt.

It was about 80* that day and very little wind. the taxi driver told me they were having a heat wave, but I told him just come to Houston in July and I'll show you a heat wave :). Seems like every other hole the caddie was saying oh you have to come up to this tee and see the view...by the time we got to 18 my legs were spaghetti...but the views were great...the one from 18 tee down that hole was spectacular.

Rick, you and Guy need to try it at least once. I live in North Carolina and I have played Pinehurst Number 2 so I was really ready for this Open to see how the best players in the world handled it. To me the course was set up nicely to test the player's ability to be accurate on approach and reading the greens. That is one of the beauties of that course it can be set up to be moderately difficult or total absolute carnage on the scorecard. I saw plenty of approach shots all 4 days within 15- 20 feet, the problem was the ability to read the greens. I would be curious to compare the number of 10-12 putts missed at a regular tournament vs how many were missed this past weekend.

Seems that wanting it too much just does come in to play for Rory. Being able to cope with that under the intense examination of this golf course became the factor… and what made it an excellent event this year. Wonder if in the same scenario much closer to the end of his career and being back in contention at that stage was deemed a surprise of the week, he’d approach it as a bonus and just go ahead and win. He’s got time and massive talent on his side still, so hope it’s more a case that in the same scenario sometime soon he’ll say I ain’t walking off with regrets and dismiss the pressure for enjoyment of the competition in that moment instead.

Talking nutrition: 5% in hydration loss is 15% concentration loss. I.e. drink a few sips between every hole. And eat a bite off a protein bar (or a banana) every three holes for energy, with a block (one square) of a dark chocolate bar to replace salts and magnesium. Obviously, when it’s hotter, drink more, in Portugal in the summer I go through 1.5l of water per nine holes, in winter in Holland I go through a 750ml water bottle per nine holes.

Just started the video and got past the "what Major do I look forward to the most" question. Have to say the Masters (I grew up only being able to watch the back nine so it was so special. It asks so many questions of a pro's game. And I looked forward to the Open, it had baked out courses and nothing like we saw in America. Running the ball up the Valley of Sin was incredible. Now they hit gap wedge and fly on to the greens. Pinehurst this year took imagination and touch, not smash and find. Amazing that Bryson came out on top. So much more fun than 6" rough. Interesting, I don't remember the TV hosts ever mentioning why they went back to the original look, maybe would have brought some perspective. I wonder what they'd think of Pine Valley?

Rick, you really need to spend some time pre qualifying working on nutrition. The key is not just water, you need to maintain a consistent blood glucose level and electrolyte balance. Avoiding hypoglycemia is crucial to maintaining a high level of performance, but also making sure not to have huge glucose spikes is important. Snack frequently and consistently through the entire round, and add balance water with a hydration mix to avoid diluting the salinity of your blood. All these concepts are huge in the world of athletics, and golfers are massively behind outside of professional golf.
