Canibus reminds me of Cormega A LOT. Both are super talented, MONSTERS on the mic, got into beefs with hip-hop legends and held their own, and never saw the mainstream success they deserved. It feels like both of their careers were mismanaged, which sucks because I think of all of the dope music we real hip-hop fans lost out on.

Been a big fan of this man since 1996. Hearing speak on these issues, the maturity has made me a bigger fan of his than ever.

It's interesting how things look from the outside. I mean, we all felt what Math was speaking of, but for Bus it was totally different than how we thought it was.

This gonna sound crazy but a lot of the time (not all) people who came up playing instruments don't have that ear to make hard ass hip hop beats. They're usually too clean and perfect because that's what they learned. let it be known I'm not saying there are no producers like that but in general I believe this to be case and in this case I apply that to Clef. Canibus 1st album should of been like what they did with Nas Illmatic with Clef and some others A&Ring the overall album with Clef handling some production for the more mainstream tracks and to help with Canibus visibility in the market.

Canibus was the shit and can't no one front on what his rhymes did for the art. He was a monster. I was all into west coast gangsta shit until I heard Canibus and then became way more interested in bars. Canibus was dangerous. I respect him even more for the honesty he's showing in these clips. That story about Nas is real talk. Canibus in that freestyle session with DMX & Noreaga was crazy. Have no doubt Nas heard that and thought "I need to write some better shit". I still think Canibus freestyles and guest appearance verses was a major reason why so many rappers didn't collab with him. From 97-00 he was bodying anyone on a track and I just don't think the emcees at the top of the industry wanted to be outshined.

Doesn’t matter what Wyclef did for Canibus as far as connecting him with high level rappers, singers, celebrities etc. Wyclef’s production failed to deliver. That’s just facts! The fans were anticipating a masterpiece that was supposed to go hard because Canibus at the time was the grittiest /fiercest MC. More than any other rapper at that time IMO. He needed a producer who would have helped amplify his rugged style. Can you imagine if a producer such as Premier, RZA, or Havoc produced his first album? Shit would have been a classic.

I bought Canibus. Listened to it and his freestyles daily back then. One of if not my favorite lyrical spitter. He may never get his just due but real Hip Hop heads know. Respect

The mainstream-juggernaut was the following post September 8, 1998: - "coke-rap" - "mumble-rap" - "animation-rap" which if you think about it, if Juvie is the only 1 that was on rookie-status like Canibus versus those that was on their Sophomore, & Junior-Run, it was a 180-shift that took-place, & I never looked it that way, but I wonder how NY wouldve looked if both Juvie, & Canibus wouldve got the same energy that year? Hell even Juvie got a major East-Stamp for "Ha!," & he been on rekord for sayin he was surprised like everyone else, per not bein told prior. So did an infiltrated-shift get a premeditated greenlight, especially thinkin-abt that Def-Jam board Canibus was speakin-on earlier? Juvie 400 was gonna-go regardless, but thinkin abt this klip + the 1 abt the board, & lookin at who solo-work dropped after September 8 of that year, itz very-interestin. Look at Refugees & Cash Money solo-debutz that year, & then ⏩ to today Feb. 26, & look at the Geo of both Rap, & Hip-Hop. People back then wanted Canibus in war mode since he decided to market his debut album with a single that was a blunt attack on an icon. The narrative was perfect. Young lyrical scrapper who was a savage on the small amount we'd heard from him vs the old guard with a history for beefing over the 4,3,2,1 happenings. Nobody that I ever heard thought Wyclef was a correct choice for this animal we wanted, so when the album was what it was, the disappointment was doubled because we knew but got hopes up that we'd be wrong. Point blank, Canibus knows he should've came harder than ever but chose to sell out or try back peddling or whatever. He's been trying to make up for his colossal initial misstep ever since but it's been too little too late. That being said, I'm glad he brought up that AIDS song. I've loved that song since it came out and nobody ever seems to remember it

Hot damn... I bought Can-I-Bus in 98 as a high schooler and thought, this album is way ahead of its time, we don't appreciate what he really made here. That album coming out today would be loved. So unfortunate that he didn't get enough appreciation back then. Still in my top 10.

its great to see him not blaming Wyclef, he used to, but i think that was fed by the reception of his first album. Clef didn't get what Canibus needed as an exec producer, but he did do everything he could within his capabilities. It was just a creative mismatch and Canibus seemed to be an artist needing guidance, not really being able to find the right beats and make good songs. just an amazing rapper. I do think his first album got more hate than it deserved, there are some gems on there for sure.
