Yep I use vinegar as well. All my towels are white. They get so clean, soft and smell great with just plain white vinegar in the place of fabric softener.
One of my college jobs was working in a laundromat. The worst thing you can put in EITHER machine is fabric softener. It gums them up and shortens their life, especially the dryer. One of my tasks was to scrub the dryer lint trap screens every week. The dryer sheet residue shellacs the screen to the point that it will literally hold water when the screen looks clean. If water won't pass thru, then there's no way air will and it becomes a fire hazard. I also had to try to clean the guts of the big commercial dryers because the fabric softener would coat the motor, etc. The lint that bypassed the filter would cake onto it then be recoated with a new layer of softener, which made the motors overheat and burn out. (I also had to remove all the dryer sheets that got "lost" in the guts of the dryer; there were always a bunch of them in there). What my boss told me was the reason people feel they need to use fabric softener is because they use too much detergent, which foams excessively then the dirt rides up on the foam, and is re-deposited on the clothes during the rinse cycle. (If you've ever had white streaks on your laundry when it comes out of the washer, it's because soap residue and macerated skin cells were trapped in a fold of laundry.) Even the amount the detergent manufacturer recommends is too much. (They recommend it to sell more detergent.) Use less soap in the wash and use straight vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. The vinegar also helps break down the mineral particles in hard water. The vinegar smell dissipates in the dryer. If you don't like the slight smell of vinegar use an extra rinse cycle. If you want your clothes softer, used felted wool balls in the dryer.
I stopped using fabric softener many years ago. I hang my washing outside and bring the towels in before they’re completely dry and finish off the drying in the dryer. Unfortunately my dryer (condenser dryer) is not working at the moment and I can’t afford to fix it. How can I soften the towels?! Any ideas?
My grandmother & mother always use vinegar in place of fabric softener. My oldest sister and I do the same. It's a lot cheaper and you don't smell the vinegar once your laundry is finished. I also have a clothes line as did my grandmother and mother. On nice days I hang most of my laundry outside. I love the way bed sheets smell from hanging outside!
my mom used vinegar growing up. no, it doesn’t really soften the clothes and yes, they do kinda smell like vinegar. i felt like the little mermaid when she experiences the human world for the first time when i tried fabric softener. i will never go back, my clothes smell like heaven and couldn’t be softer
So you mean just simple plain white vinegar and how much do you put like the same you would do is fabric softener. The people that sold me the washer told me that but I still love it because it smells so good
Psst, fabric softener makes fabric s0fter by making the fibers weaker. Tiny breaks in the fibers do make your fabric softer and the colors seems brighter BUT you are adding wear and tear to the clothes. Don't be surprised when you start seeing tiny holes in your clothing or the fabric wearing thin pretty quickly.
As long as you don’t have a chemical treated yard. Otherwise your laundry drying outside even your hair smell. I can’t take a long walk or work outdoors if I don’t wear hat or bandana.
Her laundry cart is from Steele Canvas Basket Corp. They make canvas carts for industry and retail. They are available in store and on-line from The Container Store. They have a smaller, two bushel size in store and a larger, six bushel size exclusively on line. There are also other sizes and configurations. Some of them even come in black canvas with grey accents which would be my preference. Happy to be of help.
@@sallyhemings2295 -- You're welcome. The six bushel size in black is my dream laundry cart, but my current home and laundry set-up make it impractical.
@@vliciouss -- My pleasure. If you have the opportunity to see them in store you will easily see the quality with which they are made. Worth the money in my opinion because if you take care of it, just a little, you'll have it for 20-25+ years easily.
My grandmother never used the softener because she said towels must be a little rough (Especially bath towels). She was a cleaning woman with hundreds of towels and rags. Miss you Granny. RIP ❤❤❤
I learned this in my junior high Home Economics Class. I recently was talking to a group of ladies about it and they thought I was insane!😂😅 Thank you for confirming I'm in the right state of mind.❤😁 New subbie!👍🏽🥰
@@angleblu7327 I say this all the time. I remember having Indutrial Arts class where we learned welding amoung other things. Those classes taught you skills that didn't require a four year degree.🥰
Yes. Plus I see these videos on how the laundry room is stocked full of different detergents softener scent beads and dryer sheets. I use only organic laundry detergent sheets. Nothing else.
Next you’ll tell people not to use deodorant. It’s a personal choice. I think you need to mind your own business. I rather smell fabric softener than someone’s B.O.
Dang that's a really good tip. The best one I've heard in a long time. Already realized I shouldn't be using fabric softener in my towels just because it just doesn't seem like a good idea after you get out of the shower and wiping your body with some type of good smelling stuff that probably not good with your pores open after a hot shower you know
This is also true for dryer sheets. They are coated in oil. Have you ever noticed that after washing you have random oily spots on clothes?! Its because of a dryer sheet getting stuck against an article of clothing.
@@user-ff6ru9wp1g Suavital in the yellow bottle. I absolutely love the scent it leaves on my clothes. I have tried unstoppable, downy etc. So far this hits home for me.
It's not doing too much. Its true. However, if you like it and it works for you, keep doing it. Why do people get upset when someone doesn't want to do something YOU enjoy doing. It's YOUR experience that matters. Do you. So many comments high key combative in this section. Over fabric softer 😂🤣🤣.

Fabric softener builds up in the components of your washing machine and eventually destroys it. It does the same thing to your laundry, specifically your towels. It builds up on your towels like wax and takes away the absorbency that hotel towels have. To keep them absorbent, always wash your towels in baking soda and rinse in vinegar.
I feel like I've been lied to my whole damn life! 😰 The monneeyyyy I could've saved over the years! Lmao I'm so damn close to writing to my local goverment representative that's how heated I am lol 😅
My towel rule #1, I only have white towels. I can wash them in extremely hot water and sometimes use bleach as that extra disinfectant. Plus it give my linen closets a nice clean look. Btw all of the sheets in our house are white, too.
Yes bleach will disinfect. What I do is put bleach in a panful of water to dilute it then add it to the washer after it fills up. That way it mixes in better with your clothes and does not make a white spot in one place. I dont like these microfiber towels… I think they repel water.. just get all cotton.
You're never supposed to use bleach in laundry. It breaks down the fibers of the fabric and it yellows towels, sheets, and shirts after a while. Bleach is for disinfecting your house, not your laundry
Thank you so much for this video. I have been trying to tell all of my friends this and they just look at me like I’m crazy. So I’m so glad it IS a proven fact.
1. Use hot water 2. Use the correct amount of soap. ( so many people fill the cup for each loaf and honestly it’s not the correct amount 3. Do not over load. 4. Use bleach if towels have any biological stuff or squirt that area with hydrogen peroxide if colored. ( Hydrogen Peroxide works great for blood or other things) 5 Rinse off any solids if you puked or using a kitchen towel to clean. NEVER put solids in a wash machine. ( I feel like that is something some people don’t know sadly. ) You can use a hose outside or a shower wand above a toilet. 6 Wring out your washcloths and hang to dry on the side of your hamper. Don’t throw soaking wet stuff in a hamper because it might cause mold. 7. Use vinegar if you want a “fabric softener”. It won’t cause a smell.. It actually eliminates odors! No smell is actually better than some floral or “linen scent”. 8. Do not use a dryer sheet. Just toss in the dryer. If you want to hang dry, they will feel stiff. Just shake them and beat them up a bit by rubbing them. ( or toss in the dryer with wool balls for 5 minutes). 9. If using a dryer, Shake the towels before you throw them in. They dry faster when not all balled up and compressed. Wool dryer balls are awesome and will help eliminate dry time. 10. Cut off strings if your towels get a little ratty. Otherwise the strings will be pulled more and wrap around other items causing tangled messes and bigger problems. 11. Always empty lint filters. Check before and after you did a load. Don’t count on it being empty even if you always empty it after. ( Especially if you live with other people) 12. Periodically make sure the dryer hose is not clogged with lint and the dryer vent is not clogged. 13. Fold laundry right away and put it away. Procrastination can lead to laundry piled up, someone throwing dirty laundry on a clean basket, and just chaos. It takes 5 minutes or less to fold towels and carry to a bathroom. 13. If you tend to procrastinate or forget things… use the timer in your phone to remind you to transfer laundry or go get the laundry out of the dryer. 14… Love yourself enough to occasionally take a fresh warm towel straight from the dryer to have when you get out of the shower on a cold winter day. If your partner is taking a bath, bring them a warmed towel. ( Seriously… It’s a tiny thing but shows you care.)
@@CelluliteYogaPantsummm - I sure don't know if you heard it today, but I wanted to say thank you and you are an amazingly encouraging person- never stop being you. God bless xoxox❤
It's easy to say "don't use fabric softener" when you have soft water running in your pipes. If you have medium to hard water, your towels will strongly exfoliate your skin at each use. That's when you decide to use fabric softener.
I feel like you’re just being combative for the sake of the opposite … but in case you don’t know other drying methods …you could use a clothes line, you can get a portable hand dryer, you can use a laundromat or a friend or family members dryer… and for the softness, as has been stated you can use vinegar … it costs about 1.00 and is cheaper than fabric softener, you can also use odoban or make a homemade detergent, softener, laundry perfume whatever you want.
@romy1223 that person is just being contrary. You get one or two such clowns in every video. They contribute nothing intelligent to the conversation. Just another person trying to make an argument about everything.
Using vinegar instead is much better. No oils. No residue. No overpowering scent. Softens clothes and removea static cling. It rinses clean. It's less expensive. I used to love Downy and bounce but then I started using vinegar and I never looked back.
Not always the life of your clothes. Look into it. It depends on the water you wash with (hard or soft). You can wash an empty machine on the warmest setting with vinegar. It helps clean the machine and pipes.
Never had a problem drying my body with a towel that I washed with fabric softener. I do however enjoy the softness and the scent 👏😃 But I do believe the softener does leave a chemical residue in the towels which would be a more impotent reason to stop using fabric softener in the wash. Buuuut, it doesn’t bother me sooo yeah!🤷♀️😃
@@1AnimalWhisperer I don’t find myself buying towels, sheets and clothes often, the fabric is just fine. I even have two towels that I’ve had for 26yrs and they look great! No holes, no tattered fabric, and they are still soo soft. My washer and dryer also work fine and they are 11yrs old and going strong. I don’t need to google these new age findings, the proof is in the pudding.
I have always used fabric softener on my towels and for over 40 years and my towels have always remained lover soft and fluffy without any damage and absorbant. I will continue ti use fabric softner and the fragrance of choice smells soooo good.
Yes! I just wrote a comment about this. It also depends if you use soft or hard water to wash with. In my parents home they have soft water, no need for fabric softener. But i have hard water and it makes my fabrics hard and old really fast. I use fabric softner, it really helps and my towels still dry me off 😂 the difference isn't noticable.
Thanks to inform us really I didn’t know this Pls dear teach from start how much detergent and what to add in washing and this information is really helping us to improve 😊
You shouldn't use fabric softeners for anything. They will gum up your machine and ruin your clothing over time. As for how much detergent to use, it's not very much. Read the label on your specific detergent. Generally, it's one teaspoon to one and a half tablespoons. It depends on the type of water you have, the detergent you use and the amount of clothing being washed. As for loading the machine, you don't want to underfill or overfill (no more than ¾ of the way full). White vinegar is great for removing odors, helping clean the machine and a natural fabric softener that's safe for most clothing and the machine. Hope some of this info helps!
I don't use fabric softener PERIOD😂 I don't get the fascination of smelling like detergent and all those chemicals that end up hurting us on the long run.
Completely ditch softener and start using white vinegar. This way you can use it on your towels. It also helps to breakdown residue and chemicals left by detergent, making them softer and safer.
I consider myself a halfway intelligent person but I have also always been obsessed with scents. I only realized this about fabric softener a few years ago. Thanks for the great advice!
Absolutely! Every time I explain this to someone, they think I'm a lunatic. But, I'm almost 70yrs old and since I can remember helping my grandmother do laundry with a wringer washer and only having the option of hanging our clothes to dry...I might know a thing or two.
You shouldn’t use fabric softener anyways. It’s a scam and it destroys your washing machine, quite literally. Just use a tbs of vinegar per load. Has the same effect, doesn’t ruin your washer, and it doesn’t make your clothes smell like vinegar.
I love this woman! I wish I could have her 1 week I am 69 and my house has hardwood floors and it’s hard to clean I need someone who does this as well as her to show me to get it done! Love her tips!
Fabric softener is bad on your washer and your skin. Vinegar does the same thing but doesn't scent the clothes or damage the washer or your skin. It actually helps clean the washer.
I use fabric softner in all of my laundry and will continue to do so BUT I also clean my washer monthly with vinegar and some baking soda and that works wonders like that too. I ♥️the smell of the fabric softner😊
Same! Everyone I know that doesn’t use softener on their towels has rank smelling towels 😂 fabric softener also helps with sweaty athletic clothes. I will continue to use it on my stuff too I love softener 🤣 as long as you dilute it and clean your machine you’re fine. My towels still dry me like any other towel 🙄🤣
@@kowalchukmthe smell isn’t because the don’t use softener, it’s because they don’t know how to do laundry properly, or they need to clean their washer and dryer.
@kowalchukm That's not even true! Towels rinsed in vinegar smell clean & fresh. Fabric softener covers up the smell of sweaty athletic clothing but vinegar disinfects. Enjoy your chemicals. 😄😄
@kowalchukm if your clothes smell without it, it is something in your washer. I dont use it on my towels and they smell clean every time. I use a little bit of bleach in (not a lot) to disinfect them.
@@teshamiller6001 its not about cleaning the machine, it's the fabric of the towels. The oil in the fabric softener repels the water and makes the towel harder to absorb the water after your shower. Use vinegar instead, it also disinfects and is cheaper.
Thank you for saying that about fabric softener! I have never used fabric softener, but I would especially never use it on towels. Thank you for telling all those people that do laundry to stop using fabric softener on their towels.
My grandmother never used fabric softener on the towels and stuck to powder laundry detergent. I feel like the soap build up causes funky odors when you dry your skin off with the towel…
Everyone I know uses softener. Its surfactants help wash away any excess detergent in the rinse water. It doesn’t keep the towels from being absorbent, but it does help keep the static down. And the aroma therapy factor is a bonus when pulling them out of the dryer and after a hot shower. But I’d respect a guest’s wishes to not add it to their towels.
I keep hearing about this but it has never once been my experience when I use fabric softener with my towels. They still soak up water like crazy and dry quickly. I'm so confused whenever I hear this.
Eh, I don’t think the issue with fabric softener is that they make your towels water-repellent like she says here. (Plus they have emulsifiers in them to keep the oil-based and water-based ingredients from separating and in solution.) The issue some people have is that the residue they sometimes leave on clothes may discolor over time. Some folks say they clog up their washing machine over time also.
@@user-nu7je9wf1z On the few occasions I ran out of softener, I've dried my skin with biscuits, to be sure. Hated it. Our water is up there for hardness.
@@a.r.8987 just saying what I was told when I bought my new washer. Was told not to use liquid detergent because it was oil based and will leave spots on your clothes. Same with fabric softener will leave spots on your clothes
Same for clothes! I don’t use any fabric softener. I use wool dryer balls in the dryer to help with static. I have odor sensitivities and my neighbors doing their laundry drives me nuts. I can smell the detergents and the fabric softeners in the street, when I walk, as well. I believe that we are badly influenced by the marketing media to launder with scents that make us even more sensitive. The odors are chemicals!
vinegar is the sub for softener it will not leave your towels smelling like vinegar at all I've begun doing this and I notice that my towels are actually more fluffy after drying them
