Some of my earliest memories from the 70's in my childhood are driving from Vestal and passing the IBM buildings to go to church with the family. It's hard to imagine the buildings coming down.
Who drinks at 9:30 in the morning you ask? Well, Endicott IBM'ers used to - that's who! There was a small dive bar called The Rascal across the street from the Avenue Collection building, next to the old Music Workshop, that used to do happy hour for the 3rd shifters at IBM. It was on Fridays from 8am-noon way back in the 80's. It was so weird to be in a dark bar with people smoking (yep, that long ago) and drinking and live music playing. You would walk outside from a dark bar with live music into the blaring sunshine with all of the daytime folks on their way to lunch. The Avenue used to really be a bustling business district back in the day and those Friday morning happy hours were really something!
Speaking of change, i drove home RT 12 yesterday. Just a different day for a Saturday drive. I was surprised of the new bridge and traffic light replacing the steel bridge. Interesting!
I can’t wait to drive down the brand new pavement on Washington Avenue, so it won’t be as bumpy as I point and say, “There’s an empty storefront, there’s an empty storefront, there’s an empty storefront…”
It's a shame seeing ibm come down my Uncle Rick worked there for 27 years it's been there for many decades it's sad to see it go many memories from there and around
