The Watarase Keikoku Railway is a third-sector railway company and operates the 44 kilometers long Watare Keikoku Line between Kiryu in the Gunma Prefecture and Mato in the Tochigi Prefecture. runs along the Watarase River. The route was originally built in 1911 for freight transport from the Ashio Copper Mine, near the present Mato station. Between 1918 and 1989, the route was operated by the state railway and transferred to the new Watarase Keikoku Railway afterwards.
The entire line is single-track and not electrified. Local trains operate about every 1 to 2 hours, with several additional services between Kiryu and Ōmama. The fleet consists of different series of diesel cars: 5 cars of the 89-310 series from 1990-1993 and 5 cars of the WKT-500, WKT-510 WKT-550 series that were built between 2011-2016.
On weekends there are 1 to 3 round trips (depending on the season) of Torokko train services, that feature open sides to enjoy the scenic ride along the Watarase rivers. One of them is hauled by a DE10 series diesel locomotive. In addition to the basic fare wich depends on the distance, the Torokko trains require a boarding pass fare.
The scenery is exceptional beautiful during the cherry blossom in mid April. Around Mizunuma and Godo stations you can find plenty of different cherry trees directly along the tracks. Even if it is a long way from Tokyo, it is quite popular for visitors as a daytrip. As you can see, I wasn't the only one making photos there ;). At Mizunuma you can even find an onsen for visitors inside of the station building.
In Kiryu, the southern the end of the line, the trains depart just at the station of the JR Ryomo Line towards Takasaki or Oyama. Even if you could change trains easily even on the same platform one has to remember that IC cards (Suica/Pasmo) are not accepted on the Watarase Keikoku Line. At Aioi station you can change for the Tobu Kiryu line, that also operates the "Ryomo" limited express services towards Asakusa in Tokyo.

Die Watarase Keikoku Linie ist eine eingleisige und nicht-elektrifizierte Nebenbahn in Japan. Auf einer Länge von 44 Kilometern verbindet sie Kiryu in der Präfektur Gunma mit Mato in der Präfektur Tochigi. Namensgebend ist der Fluss Watarase, dem die Bahn in einem teils engen Tal folgt. Ursprünglich 1911 für den Gütervekehr von und zur Ashio Kupfermine erbaut, wurde die Strecke zwischen 1918 und 1989 von der japanischen Staatsbahn betrieben, bevor ab 1989 die Strecke an die neu gegründete Drittsektor Bahngesellschaft Watarase Keikoku Tetsudo übergeben wurde.
Lokalzüge mit Halt an allen Stationen verkehren etwa alle 1 bis 2 Stunden mit einzelnen zusätzlichen Fahrten zwischen Kiryu und Omama. Bekannt ist die Strecke unter anderem für die zahlreichen Kirschbäume, die hier etwa Anfang bis Mitte April in Blüte stehen. An Wochenenden gibt es je nach Saison 1 bis 3 zusätzliche Torokko-Zugpaare, die Fahrzeuge mit offenen Seitenwänden aufweisen und Besuchern eine freie Aussicht bieten. Einer davon ist zudem lokbespannt und sorgt für Aufläufe von Fotografen, die ihresgleichen suchen ;).
Am Endpunkt Kiryu kann in die JR Ryomo Linie in Richtung Takasaki oder Oyama umgestiegen werden. Schneller in den Ballungsraum Tokyo hinein geht es hingegen mit den Linien der Privatbahn Tobu Tetsudo, zu denen an der Station Aioi umgestiegen werden kann.
Trotz der doch großen Entfernung von Tokyo war es schon erstaunlich, wie viele Menschen zur Kirschblüte mitgefahren sind. Mit Sicherheit einer der nachfragestärksten Tage dieser eigentlich eher beschaulichen Nebenbahn.
