Great video! Coming to it a bit late but that's ok since I've had my Vanguards (Horween Color #8) for over a year and a half now. If I'd seen this video right after getting them I might have felt bad about my purchase. But I don't. I don't use them as everyday work or hiking boots but I don't baby them either. They been through midwestern snow and slush, muddy dog parks and city streets . Also some repair work on a 50 year old work bench where I really shouldn't have used them (steel splinters everywhere including my hands but the boots survived with just some toe scuffs). For that use they've held up really well. I've done little maintenance beyond a bit of saddle soap and venetian shoe cream at a bit past the 1 year mark. Oh, and I replaced the leather laces because they really stretch after a while. My only complaints have been 1) that shank sets off airport metal detectors every time and 2) these are the hardest boots to get on and off that I own. But for $260 I have to say they really are good value for money. No one will mistake them for $800 hand-crafted boots and you've shown why. But if the Vanguards fit your budget and aesthetic I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying them. And maybe they'll move up to a pair of your handmade ones later on. Anyway, thanks for the fascinating teardown. I learned a lot from it!

This was fantastic, I'd love this for all the popular boot brands. Problem is wanting to get your money's worth and wearing them first. It'd take many years before some of them were beat down enough for this level of tear down.

Thursday Boot Company boots have never claimed to be work boots. They are lifestyle boots with a work boot aesthetic. They are for office workers or a night out. They are also the cheapest Goodyear welted can buy. If you want an all leather Goodyear welted work book then about the cheapest option is the Red Wing Blacksmith, Moc Toe and Iron Rangers that are between $310-$350. Boots from Jim Green would be a much better budget work boot. They use a Stitchdown construction and can be resoled. I don’t have a pair but several reviews like them but some have recommended replacing the insole but like their construction.
@schmidts.bootmaker
@schmidts.bootmaker Год назад
Yes they never claimed to be work boots but they sure did claim they were handmade which they are not that's my problem with them being handmade it should be handwelted not good year welted.

@@schmidts.bootmaker Saying something is "handmade" isn't saying anything about the materials used to make it. Also, Goodyear welted is a construction type, not a construction method.
@schmidts.bootmaker
@schmidts.bootmaker Год назад
@@scottdennison9188 The construction type is a welted design, but the method to get that welt is a Goodyear welt. There are better construction methods to get that welt than the Goodyear welt. In my opinion, hand welting is the best. You are right about if something is ''handmade" it doesn't always talk about the materials' quality. I've seen handmade shoes with crappy materials and great materials and I've seen the same with production-style shoes as well. You are just more likely to see quality materials used if the boots or shoes are handmade.
@scottdennison9188
@scottdennison9188 Год назад
@@schmidts.bootmaker If you stitch a Goodyear welted construction shoe by hand, it's still a Goodyear welted shoe. Goodyear just invented the machine to make that construction type easier, so it's now named after him. That just means the insole, upper, and welt are stitched together, and then a separate stitch attaches that welt to an outsole. Doing the same thing by hand doesn't make it a different construction type.

Get the best boots your available funds can get. Everyone want the best material and best construction and best everything. But for $200 i think Thursday boots is one of the best bang for your buck in terms of aesthetic and materials. If you have $350 to spare, get Redwing. If you have $550 then Nicks is your best bet.

This is a great video series idea especially for the more affordable $100-300 cost heritage style footwear. Your method and take is different than other quality footwear channels like Rose Anvil, StrideWise, Boot Spy, Trenton & Heath, and Carl Morawski. I’d watch you review things like Taft, Milwaukee Boots, Portland Leather Goods/Patina, Sutro, Freebird, Thursday of course (the statesman shoe doesn’t seem to have any RU-vid presence even from Thursday), or the other companies that like to flood Facebook feeds. Just an idea. Just finding your channel.

Cause I’ll like to hear it on the Moto boot from Taylor Stitch.

I’m still gonna buy a pair of their Chelsea boots. I’ll rarely wear them so an entry level pair of boots with a few corners cut will serve me well. Plus I can get them resoled with a leather insole when the time comes.

I’ve noticed in other Thursday boot cut apart videos that there is a combo of a leather/man made midsole in every single one of their boots. Is that the case here? UPDATE: Contacted Thursday boots for their rundown of materials and they use oak leather for their midsole, no cardboard whatsoever in their description of materials used in the boot. unless it has changed over the past couple years. I thought what you have reviewed as the "insole" looked a little odd to be cardboard.

These are $200 boots, what can you expect? I checked your site and you sell $600 boots. I’m sure they are great, but these are 1/3 the price so compromises need to be made.

Really enjoyed this verbal and physical breakdown. The Thursday Boots "appear" on the surface, to be well built boots, to a layman like myself. But I'm immediately suspicious of anything advertised on social media, soooo. Haha Hope you continue building the channel! Would love to see more expert breakdowns like these on boots, other items that we are so dependent on for quality, not just fashion. As a vet, heavy traveler, hiker, motorcyclist, etc. It infuriates me to no end how poorly quality clothing, luggage, etc. are made these days. And how hard it is to get truly expert opinions on products, based on their actual build quality. Not just how they look, or how much "influencer" push their PR team is throwing money at.

@@MrPinpoint007 true, but at $200, you're hitting a certain "quality build floor". Where regardless of the brand, production costs really wouldn't allow you to build a quality boot, AND make any profit. Hence the reason that these "last a lifetime" shoe brands don't really make the same claims about their sub-$200 shoes. Or don't bother dipping below $200 at all. The margins just aren't there, or they'd be forced to lower their production quality, ultimately diluting the brand. @Schmidt's Boot Maker Check out CNES Shoes though if you get a chance. I've heard very good things about their quality for the price. They've got a pair of boots, and a pair of Oxford's I've been eyeing.
