For other commenters questions. 1. Yes you can upgrade internal and still use an external hardrive at the same time 2. Internal can save and play ps5 like the stock memory. (You just pick the drive you want them to load to) 3. External can save and play ps4 but it can only store ps5 to transfer to the system quicker. Example: my current config has 2 TB internal (1 stock, 1 installed) and 5 TB external. All my ps5 games automatically load and play from the internal and all the Ps4 games automatically load to and play from the external.
That's the same setup I have. There's little point filling up the internal and SSD storage with PS4 games. I do move individual PS4 games to internal though because the loading times during gaming seem much faster.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN ANSWER TO MY QUESTION OF WHETHER OR NOT I CAN GET MORE SPACE TO STORE AND RUN PS5 VERSIONS OF GAMES!! I JUST NEED AN INTERNAL M.2 SSD
It's been a long time, good to see you're doing well! I'm glad the compatibility is finally out, I've been using a 512GB USB since launch to store ps4 games/clips so the SSD update is coming just in time
I know that this is an old video, but I just got my 2T SSD and was looking for install videos. I have to say that of the MANY videos I saw yours was the best! The only thing that I might include is to recommend that people use some sort of padding (towel/terry cloth) to lay their PS5 on while they are doing the install. I think doing the "love tap" technique is better than the "lift and pull" one as I felt like I was going to pull my PS5 apart. I also like how you pointed out to blow the dust off, very thoughtful! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Is WD Black SN850X the best internal SSD? I’ve been heard they’re all essentially the same once installed as far as performance. However, I’m thinking the one that has the best heat sync and heat dissipation is going to run the fastest. The 1TB WD-Black is like $109 on Amazon for the newer SN850X but there’s probably no noticeable difference between that and your model in the video
Just got my PS5 about 5/weeks ago… I only have one game (MW2) so I’m wondering if it makes a difference or if I can wait for the price to go down and get SSD M.2-4TB so I can buy once cry once.
@@greg6162 the firecuda 530 is considered the best you can get as it's designed to last longer than most drives as well as 4 years of data recovery for free or something like that. it costs more but the idea is that you pay more now to save more later as it should last as long as your console
I just bought ps5 as a xmas gift for my boyfriend so thankful for youtube because idk anything about these systems or storage thanx for this. Will the WD Black with heatsink fit in the digital version?
Dude! That fucking “love tap” is amazing and made it so easy to take off. Everyone else I’ve seen struggled or scratched their console(RTUSA). Thanks for that.
You definitely called the lower prices I just got a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro with heat sink for $150USD. Took 3 min to transfer 350gb of stuff to it. Load times are exactly the same. pleased with the purchase so far
So glad i waited. I bought an external 2TB memory foy $180 and it turned out the company lied that it was compatible with ps5. I waited over a year and bought the WD- -Black 4TB internal storage for $349. Few months ago, the 2TB was $450. Definitely worth the wait.
Nice video but let me give you some good information on Wifi let's say your speed is 300 In actuality it's much slower depending on how many devices you have connected to through your bluetooth. For instance you have 10 Devices connected That 300 is divided into the ten different devices you have connected so if you want good speed on you PS5 you would need to disconnect or turn off some of you devices this will help you, I never knew that until I talked to a technician on why my speed was slow.
I bought the Samsung 980 Pro w/ Heatsink. Not sure how it is for the other M.2 SSD's, but for mine, I had to update the firmware on the SSD itself in order to get above 5500 Mb/s Read Speeds. Just an FYI if anyone is gonna buy the 980 Pro.
I just last week got a ps5 and today I installed my new FireCuda 530. My speed on my ps5 says 6538, Im wonder do I need to get or do a download to my ssd or update my ps5 to get the speed up to maximum performance which I believe is 7300? I would be happy at anything above 7100. Just wondering if the 6538 is all I can get?
Purchased the official 2TB SSD drive from Amazon. Connected it in, turned it on and the console tried to format it, made a really high pitched sound then turned off the console. Turned it back on and it once again recognised the storage unit but refuses to format it. Tried a dozen time to reinstall it and format but it refused to format. Took it out, sent it back for a refund. I probably got a faulty SSD drive but its put me off ever trying again.
Funny thing is that all of the ps5 games I wanted, fit on the basic ps5 storage and leaves the ps5 with space to spare. You see I still have my ps4 pro as well and only got games released after the ps5 release to use on the ps5. Whilst backward compatibility is good it didn’t make much sense to me to get rid of my ps4 pro which is awesome and still runs well, to use up unnecessary storage on the ps5 with ps4 titles when storage is smaller on the ps5 than the ps4 pro to begin with. These are all the games I wanted for ps5 and the approximate install sizes; Horizon forbidden west around 100gb with patch god of war ragnorok 84.095GB astro playroom 10.98GB ratchet and clank rift apart 42.183 GB sifu 7.16GB kena 17 GB stray 7GB the quarry 43.6 GB Older games like Spider-Man, ghost of Tsushima, last of us, HZD,etc I just play them on my ps4 pro. They look good enough on it and I had already played the hell out of those games by the time the ps5 was available. For all those going out and buying 4 TB SSDs so they can fit every game past and present because they got rid of their ps4 pros……Sony got you!😂😂😂 it will be a while before I need to get a 1TB SSD. I’ll wait till they are much cheaper if I even need one at all. I still have my Xbox one x and I went through my library the other day and realised that it was full of games I was not likely to play. So you know what?……. I deleted them and it wasn’t really to make space as all of the games I was playing were already installed. I noticed a patch up date for no hope so I thought I would remove all the games I knew I wasn’t likely to revisit. As I don’t plan on getting anymore one x games, the storage will only be used for game updates and system patch updates which I do occasionally since I typically keep my one x offline. My ps4 pro was able to keep all the games I frequently played stored on the hard drive without needing to delete and I had tons of gameplay capture taking up storage that I haven’t uploaded to RU-vid yet. Whilst I appreciate that future games will have larger install sizes, all of the games I wanted the Ps5 for were all ready out and there isn’t anything coming out any time soon on my list of day one purchases. GTA6 and last of us 3 will probably be a while😂
Actually really only requirement at the moment is a gen4 drive and add a heatsink if you want it to last. Might matter later butany people showed any gen 4 works at the moment.
Has anyone run their PS5 and SSD w/heatsink without replacing the silver cover plate? To me it makes more sense to keep the SSD bay open to allow the heatsink more space to dissipate heat. There aren't any airflow channels or vents inside the SSD expansion bay so it's not like the silver cover plate helps with internal airflow. However keeping the cover plate off would also help utilize the main PS5 fan for cooling as that's only a couple inches away from the SSD bay. Anyone else run their PS5 without the cover plate after installing a SSD w/heatsink?
I believe the metal pieces or w.e material they're made of on the sides of the SSD bay are designed to dissipate heat and work in tandem with the PS5 fan. I could be wrong however
You just half to lift that top left corner and it gently move to the right and it comes off super easy. I still think external is a go regardless specially if y got slow internet. Damn 300megs. You lucky. I can only get 25 where I'm at.
Do you need to update it bedore you can install it? Since I am buying a new ps5 and I tought I set it in before I first start my console, I hope I can get an answer
Since you’re getting the console brand new it’ll already have the firmware update installed that allows you to install the ssd expansion and yes you install the ssd expansion before ever turning the console on
ANYONE: I installed this to my PS5, and everything is great. My question is, do I transfer all my games to the new storage 2TB, or leave the games in the PS5 storage? Is it better to light up the storage on PS5 and transfer it to 2TB? Does it make the PS5 faster or better?
im honestly not too sure but i think it depends on what type of ssd you use. if its faster then games will load/save faster, and vice versa with a slower ssd that will load/save games slower.
I have just about the same internet speed and was having the same problem.I bought an extender and im not far from my wifi to begin with but maybe it interfered with somthing and since then haven't ran into any problems no slowing down im getting a constant 350mbs to 400mbs. Also the extender was $20 somthing dollars I definitely say it is worth a shot cause if it doesn't work just return it. Thanks for the ssd help much appreciated
i just won a ps5 with 2 controllers and 4 games off newegg shuffle and i was debating keeping it since i have a monster rig desktop. so i thought about adding an m.2 and for these redonculous prices having most titles cross platform or even attainable from xbox pass i just cant justify keeping it. entry level desktops are going for the prices a ps5 is with just storage expansion while desktops with minimum 8gb gpu memory are still sustaining moderate gaming. what do you think? should i keep it?
@@deejay6746 Amazon has them and Sam Goody/ FYE Stores have them. That’s where I got mine. Still mad weird that he wasn’t able to tell his subscribers where he got it.
FYI, these SSDs are still pretty expensive. I got lucky with my purchase. I had Best Buy rewards money and a gift card which shaved the sale price. I ended up getting the 1TB Firecuda for just shy of $150. The 2TB which is what I would have preferred was $400. Craziness.
I just got my ps5! Do I need to download the ps5 version of my game like gow! MW2! again! Or with it automatically switch to ps5 version after I transfer game and data to my ps5??
Hey man nice video I dont play online games like COD, Fortnite etc... im more of a solo single player gamer mostly Fifa, Resident Evil games God of war and other open world games. Is it useful for me to get an SSD in my case or is it a waste of money?

@@kaibaskywalker2725 SSDs are always in stock so scalpers don't mess with them. You can easily get A 2tb SSD for under $180. The prices have finally lowered and it seems like they'll continue to lower once the next gen PCIE 5 SSDs release.
I need help, please someone. Whats a screw driver and what are plastic clips people speak about that are holding the cover onto the system . A better question , how to i get the tape off the Playstation box so i can open the box. Help, its been 2 months. I think im doing something wrong.
If it's been set up when you download a new game does it ask if you want to put it on the game or the new ssd ? Or is it automatically to the new sad ?
Is my game data that’s already installed going to be erased? That’s my biggest concern. I just purchased a 2TB with heatsink but the “format” portion is making me hesitant.
PS5 has an internal SSD that can't be removed and has all your storage in it. With the external SSD you're only adding more storage, the format only formats the new SSD. Not your PS5. So your previous data is fine
If I haven't turned on/set up my ps5 for the first time: which should I do first? Should I boot the ps5 for the first time or install the ssd and then boot up the ps5 for the first time and then install the ssd after that ? Please help!
I just ordered a new ssd for mine with a heat sink. Although, looking at the tiny compartment the ssd goes in I feel the heat sink will surely take up valuable space and make it hotter in there.
No the point of the heat sink is literally to dissipate the heat from the surface of the SSD. Without the heatsink it's creating the same amount of heat except it's not being removed right away, leading to higher temps. There's literally no downside to a heatsink in this situation
What happens if you've already installed a bunch of stuff from the ps store into your PS5 if you go to upgrade the SSD? Do you transfer first? Or redownload after installation? Still curious about what happened with all that...?
@@drwombat I just added my Samsung 980 1TB today and have 1tb of m.2 and 850gb of base storage to use. Didn't have to move or delete anything. Watch the official playstation tutorial posted a month ago
@@OilersHD97 @picsoleated thanks fellas somehow that part about the m.2 slot being EXPANDABLE escaped me... Also I didn't realize that the onboard storage is soldered to the board (never really a GREAT idea) I hope it lasts... Now I'm really glad I got that warranty.
Do you know why my sabrent rocket 4 plus 1 TB only reads 5800 MB/s in my ps5? Every video I see shows 6500 and up but the same drive in my ps5 did 5100, 5500, 5800,
If anyone sees this I’d appreciate an answer. So I can’t find anything online but my question is will I be able to play games straight from the M2 SSD or will I have to transfer them like I do on external storage?
So if I install a new nvme ssd in my PS5 can I play PS5 games directly from the new nvme ssd I just installed or only PS4 games like the external drives
Everyone asking this is because most other videos are saying ps5 games can be stored on extra ssd but have to be moved to internal to play but Ps4 can be played directly from extra storage. Sooo... was this changed with an update where ps5 games can now also be played directly from extra storage without transferring?
Is it just me or does all this just feel like a money grab scheme? Previous systems simply required slapping a game cd or cartridge in and you're instantly good to go! Now even disc version games absorb the extremely limited internal memory to play. Spending $500+ on the console and then another $400 on an ssd to get it running properly seems ridiculous. The technology should be better than requiring a ton of extra money to enjoy the ease that we had before. 🙄
Being able to stream data at the speed you need to build a 3d world around your player at the graphical fidelity of current systems, you can't do that with a spinning physical disk. PC's and laptops these days don't even have disc drives because it's so obsolete. Consoles are the only thing where they still exist, and even those are going away with digital editions of systems. It might seem like a money grabbing scheme but if you look deeper into the tech you'll understand why this happens. That's why even games on discs need to be installed into the consoles storage, by then the disk just becomes a way to verify that you own the game while it's actually being run through your consoles' storage
@@picsoleated Right, I understand the technology, just saying perhaps it was designed that way to maximize profits instead of offering the consumer more bang for their buck.
@@dowbowski Sony at least gives u the free choice to use the NVMe SSD u want. On Xbox u can use the Seagate expansion which cost like 219€ vs 129€ for a WD SN 850 1 TB 😂
@@jojohill27 yea I finally saw a full tear down video. But before watching, a game stop rep tried telling me the main memory imbedded into the Circuit board could be switched lol.
Why not? It was the same with the ps4 and PS3. This is actually much easier than both of those, plus you don't have anything sticking out of your console
I've heard that for the samsung 980 pro people have upgraded the firmware of the ssd (meaning you would have to connect it to your PC before formatting it in your PS5) and it helped them get faster speeds
