I think that in future ones, they may add some sounds. These would be to indicate stuff so the driver can keep their eyes on the road. In the final version I expect the software controlling the motors will do a bit of traction control so that the wheels all turn at the same speed. I would expect a sound when that system does something because unlike on a normal truck, there wouldn't be any sound from it happening. I also think they might add a sound for "you may want to back off on that go pedal a bit". Without sounds, and with the high off the ground perspective, it could be a bit tempting to go just a little faster than the authorities suggest.

That was awesome to see you pull that load, and to see it required so little energy to move means the gearing is right to start with, now to do more testing and longer pulls to do stress testing on the frame and differentials. Good luck and congratulations on an awesome job. Can't wait to hear about your first sale to a customer.

nice sherman! its so heavily modified i thought it was a patton at first
@dominicgarcia4048
@dominicgarcia4048 8 месяцев назад
Tip: you can tell if its a patton by the drive sprocket placement and the way the road wheels look like,because the pattons suspension is mostly in the hull and the shermans is on the outside on the inner side of the road wheels and i think the return rollers arnt the right number but idk about that one

That’s because it’s neither. At least according to The Chieftain who took a look at it with Rich, it’s basically a Frankenstein of WW2 American armoured vehicle driveline components mounted to a custom frame.

You probably need a new name for it: it's a truck but for serious work. This is literally next level stuff. By the way, would Topsy have an advantage on high altitude environments, like the Atacama desert in Peru, over trucks with diesel engines?

they're not naming all of them topsy lol, just the first one
@pan6593
@pan6593 8 месяцев назад
Good question - I could imagine yes, since the primary power source can always be the battery (and the diesel gen still run optimally, maybe fine tuned for the different air).

@@octodoodle I meant the word "truck". It is obviously superior to a normal truck in all sorts of ways
@kensmith5694
@kensmith5694 8 месяцев назад
As currently designed Topsy would have a little advantage at high altitudes. The tree line is as high as they were thinking. To make it work better higher up they would likely: 1) Add an extra blower to the diesel to get the effective compression ratio higher at altitude. 2) Add more cooling hardware on the electrics. Thin air doesn't carry away heat as well.

Hauled effortlessly? Around a circle at 5mph? A bit different than actually hauling a load of logs for a day, or better yet hauling logs for a whole winter or even better yet hauling logs for a whole season … don’t place your order with Edison and be fooled by their awesome sales techniques, wait till you know it will actually e reliable . My prediction, depending on Edison’s budget, it will take another 10-20 years to perfect something like this.

There are some interesting stories from back in the days when steam power was slowly being phased out as internal combustion became common. A lot of folks quit their jobs because they couldn't tolerate the noisy sound of the IC engines compared to boilers and steam. And here we are, around 100 years later, witnessing exactly what those guys talked about, but in reverse. Years of jerky, violent, loud trucks we've all been accustomed too and a few lucky drivers (for now) staring in absolute disbelief as a locomotive on wheels casually walks 100,000lbs around with hardly a sound.
