In Southeast Wisconsin, one of the more common activities is where bass are picking off juvenile bluegills that have congregated around nesting gills, but when we lived on the lake growing up, I would often see mudpuppies (salamanders) crawling around bluegills nests. Bass here can't resist an opportunity to pick off a lizard (plastic or otherwise) when fished around nesting gills.

So good I had to watch it twice! You do great work Steve - love watching underwater film on bass - still love to rewatch Glen Lau’s classic film on bass. Your observations were very interesting I would love to know what they were doing? Maybe a fisheries biologist would know? Amazing that they were basically ignoring the bluegills?!?!

@kevinatwell9781 Likely hunting salamanders that are searching the beds for eggs would be my first thought. I have seen bass with a belly full of salamanders taken around bluegill beds during a spawn when conducting a food habits study on bass. Biologist/Habitat Specialist, retired.

I'm not in Minnesota, not going to speculate the why. What I will do is make sure i explore the weed edge, or first "edge" from the nesting area first. Great videography. Challenging the norm and encourage anglers to look out side the box. Enjoying your channel and content.

Steve: I'm not sure exactly what they were looking for either, however, I will tell you that we have had tremendous success throwing that Varivas specialty hook set up with the Grenade weight, it has allowed us to fish the Ned in many areas we avoided, as the traditional ned rig would get hung up on unseen bottom wood. At first I was afraid the extra "hardware" might discourage them, but that has not been the case at all.

This was a great video. This is what the bass do almost all Summer off my dock. A finesse tube or a Biffle bug or a small craw with a very light weight or no weight fished extremely slow is what usually works for me. And there is something special about pumpkin pepper green color on a 4.5” ring tube that other colors don’t do. Happy fishing 🎣

That is fascinating! I honestly don't think the bass here in the deep south exhibit that behavior; at least I've never seen it. But you have to assume that it's an easy food source since they are keying on that rather than all the pan fish around them.

We would all be guessing so heres mine. Theres worms and young eels ir mud dogs we call them in Central Florida. Theyre like a 20 inch salamander that dart from the bottom to the top of the water for air or something then they disappear. Maybe they live on the edges of these panfish beds or get pushed there by the activity. Great video as always. Thx

All kinds of nymphs hatch at the same time as pan fish fry, I've alwaysthought bluegill time their hatch to coincide with this as a food source for the young. Makes total sense for them to be feeding from the bottom looking for these nymphs, which explains why they wanted a smaller profile bait. I would almost bet a small (1.75) helgramite or similar creature bait would do the trick in this situation as well.

Something I have pondered, since I am from MN and have watched this behavior before... What predators do southern bass have? Because up here, pike and musky also roam the shallows during these bluegill spawns, your average sized bass of 1-2.5lb will need to defensively hunt which could explain why they roam on the outside of the beds near some cover. Also welcome to midwest finesse, I can tell you right now that larger swim jig was too much for what you were throwing at, a ned rig with a finesse trd would have killed here.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Год назад
A little TRD is what I used on that jig rig. Worked great! There are lots of chain pickeral, gar, etc in more southern waters. I just love fishing MN!

@jasonsparks4601 Год назад
@@SteveRogersOutdoors we also have birds of prey, alligators and some 50+ lb catfish around....
@Psykout
@Psykout Год назад
@@SteveRogersOutdoors Hmm forgot about pickerel, they'd get big enough to challenge bass but I'd surmise just when bass are mid size. Gar would be a predator throughout the lifespan of the bass though, easily. Where my head is going is that how differently do bass feed, hunt and migrate in bodies of water where they are not the apex predator or at least the most common one. Many of our bodies of water will hold 25-36" pike, with the rarer lakes having 36"+ pike or 40-50" muskie (including tiger hybrids which are more aggressive feeders and grow much faster). Fish of those sizes can feed on good sized bass, so I always wondered how big do the bass have to get before they start to feel safer. I muskie fish a good amount, you can really tell how those fish gain a ton of confidence when they reach a certain size, they don't even care about boats anymore haha.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Год назад
@@Psykout a friend of mine had a coffee table mount of a huge muskie that had a 6lb smallmouth in its mouth - and it made the smallie not look that big. Have no idea if it was a replica or not, but it was impressive.
