The colors in this painting are pretty wild, but watch what happens when I start to glaze it. I'll first demonstrate how I glaze in oil using transparent paint, a product called Liquin, and odorless mineral spirits. Next I'll show you the same technique using acrylic paint, gloss medium, and water.
Take a look!
Glazing is a great way to bring harmony to a painting, especially with a challenging palette. Whether you're using oil or acrylic, the technique is simple. I love glazing and I'll show you why this technique is so effective next week.
What glazes do you use in your work? Let me know in the comments.
In this week's episode of the Art2Life Podcast, I'm doing a deep dive into the value of mistakes. I make mistakes all the time and have learned so much from them. If you have a fear of making mistakes, be sure to tune in this Wednesday! You'll learn not only to accept your mistakes, but embrace them as well. You can subscribe to the Art2Life Podcast and catch up on past episodes right here on this channel!
Have an awesome Sunday!

I absolutely LOVE glazes! I use the Liquitex Glazing Medium + water. I often scratch through the glaze to reveal the bright colours underneath and then layer more acrylic paint on top and repeat the whole process, it’s so satisfying to see things develop so quickly. Thanks for the sharing Nick!

I use glazes a lot. I work in acrylic, and I cut contact paper in shapes I prefer, apply them to the dry painting; then after I cover the entire surface with a glaze, I remove the masks/blocks, so that the underlying colors appear in the shapes. Then I frequently glaze the entire surface again, with another color, to harmonize the shapes with the rest of the composition.

Liquin with a little bit of turps and oil, then raw umber, sometimes ultramarine, alizarin crimson, any of the transparent colours really. I've experimented a lot with various glazing mediums but liquin was a game changer! My old painting teacher always used a raw umber glaze if he felt a painting had 'got away' from him. Then reclaiming the colour from that. Another valuable lesson Nick. ❤

Thanks for this video! How long do you have to wait for an oil painting to dry before you glaze them?

I thought glazes were done with thinned down acrylic paint of choice?
@davidgilford8959
@davidgilford8959 10 месяцев назад
That’s correct I use most colours to glaze in acrylic. Some acrylic colours have a greater transparency than others and these need less thinning ( or not at all) others with greater opacity need to be thinned. I use a Matt medium to thin ( Windsor and Newton Matt medium is a good one) and a little bit of water. A word of warning, if you use too much water then the polymers which hold the paint together start to break down and the paint can become unstable. Better to use some acrylic thining medium along with water say 50/50. Good luck with your glazing you may have to experiment a little.
