Want to know how to perfectly shoot a mirror-polished watch? Our Creative Director Marcus Flack has the answers. Composition is everything. Lighting tips and pointers. White and black reflections are key in all product photography. Finding inspiration for your flat lay.
In this episode of In The Metal, Marcus wrongfoots himself and goes down a rabbit hole that proves to only create a bad result. Upon scraping the shoot and starting again, he uses this as a teaching moment so we can all learn some of the fundamentals of shooting a mirror-polished watch with the best results.
Come along for the ride. It's about the journey, not the destination.

Woohoo, another ITM episode 👏 Great behind the scenes, especially the focus on what not to do. Sounds like the classic Aussie "she'll be right" got ya this time. Your focus on small details is mind blowing. When this hobby is a lot about details, your unique perspective is invaluable

Really like In The Metal vids. I am staying away from the photography rabbit hole as watches are enough, but this is really cool. As a normie, this was fantastic!

That’s actually interesting to read. I really sit here wondering if this content is too niche ya know. Only interesting to photographers. So you think it’s still worth doing more of this stuff?

@@marcusflack1523 I think it works. It’s the same reason I watch car reviews on RU-vid like @savagegeese or @SarahnTuned. I will never wrench on a car to that level but glad to learn cool things. Plus you add a different perspective to watches from the @Timeandtidewatches writers.

My biggest problem with watch photography / videography is finding good boards/textures for the background. 90% of them seem blown wayy larger in scale, so they start to look fake (especially with wood and concrete textures). For the light, I find that a small portable LED light placed at 12 just adds much needed visual focus on the subject (the watch), especially when having a busy composition. I've been using Nanlite's Pavotube after discovering it in one of the About Effing Time videos. For me, that extra light in addition to the main light just brings the whole thing together. Thanks for sharing, Marcus! I'm feeling motivated now to film my own version of this because I do a few things quite differently. Learned a lot from this!😄🤘

That’s great to read my friend. Glad the video could inspire something new for you. I like the sound of your setup. Nice and compact which is super good when you have to move around a lot. I have so many different setups depending on my situation. Everything has its purpose and sometimes being able to track light means you can’t take as much gear as you would otherwise like. I feel you re the resolution of these backdrops. Yes they need to be sourced from somewhere reputable. And I especially love how the paper basically has no glare to it no matter how hard you strike it with light. Thanks for watching. See ya on the flip side

My word.....how good was this? MARCUS, we need MOAR. MOOOAAAARRRRRR. KA-BLA-FREAKIN-MO. I'm super tempted to try out what you did in this vid but I never know what to do about lighting...... Honestly...you've made me curious and I want to learn.. And when you showed the back of the watch - wowza. Absolutely incredible.

Thanks Marcus - BTW what into model of camera would do macro like yours? Ideally one of the fixed lens or no need to change lens varieties but that is a big upgrade from iPhone

Hmmm thats a hard one to jump stright to a recommendation. As fixed len cameras are typically not built for crazy Macro. However I do like the Sony zv-1 ii Have a look at this video where he also shocases a macro filter you can get for the camera. I think the combo of camera and filter for when you want super close up would work pretty well - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OkL-S8TrICs.html
