Even three years after its presentation this is still a stunner! Just the perfect balance between classic/by-the-numbers and unique/quirky.

I am a Professional Pilot and own it. For this type of watch, definitely Longines BigEye. Took me a year of research before choosing it over others. - For a "Classic Chrono. Pilot watch" , Longines BigEye is THE watch, Breitling were not doing watches in the early days of Aviation, Longines YES. So i buy legitimacy for a Classic. - the aesthetic to me, looks much better, much more sporty/elegant - the Lum is amazing, visible during the day, the green is very refreshing. Not a dial pretending to be aged over the time like the Breitling. - the engrave of the plane at the back is so classy - thickness is perfect for a Chrono, not too thick - the in house movement is top of the top - pushers are thicker/robust (same as before pilot watches with their gloves) This watch will gain lots of attention, very difficult to re-produce it at the this level of right balance, and impossible to buy the early days watch maker for a Classic like other brands are doing. Again, Legitimacy pays off.

Such a beautiful looking piece. Imagine if they offered it in a manual hand wind version with a greatly reduced height! A hand cranker would suit this design so much

Excellent review, Thanks! This is definitely one of the most handsome watches to come out in 2017.. if not in the past few years. An instant new classic.

I'm happy to discover this. The IWC Spitfire is on my radar but this really offers a lot more for your dollar. I'd miss the day date but you're right, it would crowd this interesting handsome dial. Also, the lum not being faux retina is refreshing. I may have my chronograph picked for less than half what I'd planned on spending with almost no compromise.

Case looks really close to the IWC pilot chrono which uses a base ETA with a fancy rotor! This is a better deal and the Colomnn wheel is a game changer
@andresrogenmoser5778
@andresrogenmoser5778 4 года назад
no current IWC is using ETA....the old one's maybe - but back then ETA also didn't belong to SWATCH.

@@andresrogenmoser5778 ETA was indeed part of Swatch when IWC was still using ETA movements.

They whacked this out of the park. And 20mm lug width too! I like when companies make room for the rotor with the case back, not the case. Looks proportional from the sides. Great thoughtful design!

Came extremely close to buying an Avigation BigEye on vacation in September...I passed then because I didn't know enough about it and its beauty really caught me off guard. I have a Longines Heritage Conquest as well and it's been rock solid. Thinking that this Avigation will round out my Heritage Conquest and Tudor BB36 well. It wears remarkably well for its size; I was concerned about it's thickness due to the Valjoux 7750 based movement. My wrist is only about 6.4" around and it fits really well - I think it's largely based to the soft leather strap. Unlike other leather straps, which can be hard, this one is very soft and molds to your wrist really well. The only thing about the Avigation I would change is making the minute counter the same diameter as the other registers for better symmetry. I know, I know, that's the purpose of the "BigEye". Even with that, it's a stunner!

This is one of the finest luxury watches I have ever seen. Pure elegance and refinement, at an exceptionally reasonable (though far from cheap!) price. Longines is one of the best brands in watchmaking, can't stand the pretentiousness of Rolex and their designs are nothing special at all.

It would be nice if watch companies would offer larger case sizes of their heritage watches for the modern market, as well as smaller sized cases for those who want a more authentic experience.
@abbath1586
@abbath1586 6 лет назад
Hamilton did for their Intramatic 68 and it didn't go over well. I think smaller sizing for heritage pieces is a better option because most who like heritage like smaller sizes except for a small few.

Is this not just a trend-following watch tying to capitalize on the popularity of the IWC Pilot? Great technical achievement for the price though.
@trevbarlow9719
@trevbarlow9719 4 года назад
Which trend would that be?
@nikhilc8681
@nikhilc8681 3 года назад
Ankur Ji, it's a remake of it's own watch of the 30s or 40s. Longines doesn't need to copy anyone when they themselves have such a rich history in watchmaking. You need to do your research before making such comments.
@josevasquez1781
@josevasquez1781 3 года назад
No trend here, I have a few tool pilot/Aviation watches that I love. This in based on Longines own original design from years gone by and it's a winner literally, it won first prize at a major watch event and with watch lovers alike. This Big Eye reminds me of a German Flieger watch from the early 40s or so. IWC are a more modern technical pilots watch with a different aesthetic.

Just bought one of these - it's running at about +7 seconds a day which is acceptable but not great. May improve after running in. My only slight gripe is the lume isn't great - it fades very quickly on the numerals, but the hands are a little better.
