@@Doc_Schmidtso, I read my report after my first one & it said small external hemorrhoids around my anus. Ewe! Never brought up over the phone (just the polyps removed), should one be concerned about this?

My symptoms were worse than prep. I'm so glad I had scopes done to figure out what was causing them.

Agreed. I vomit every time, my body is just physically incapable of drinking that amount of fluid in the time they expect. I get so full my stomach can’t take it. This, and the fact that it was going to cost me over $1000 out of pocket, is why I have put it off for the past several years.

@@KD-vf6yqI have gastroperesis and also simply can't drink that much. I get a powder prep and mix it with less water. I know all the volume of water is ideal but I've had good cleanness on my last two with this method (I do try and keep drinking water in between as well what I can manage). Maybe this method could help you next time, my GI said there are other options as well but this has worked for me. You shouldn't have to be throwing-up from prep.

I’m old. I’m old AND colon cancer runs in the family. I’ve had to have a lot colonoscopies and can attest to the fact that the prep gets easier every time I do one. I’m not saying it’s fun, but I drink a lot less than I used to and the taste is now tolerable. Get your colonoscopy!

Had my first one at 25 years old, and truly, the prep is the hardest out of it all. I’ve always had fear of being put under and such, but when I woke up it just felt like a huge nap. Don’t be afraid folks, just think of it as you’re about to get some good rest. Also, you’re gonna fart a lot when you get brought into the recovery room, due to the excess air from the procedure 😂

I’ve been put under a couple times and it’s never felt like a nap. It feels like you closed your eyes and when you wake up you’re in a different room, like you teleported. The only nap-like part is waking up all groggy.

@@ferretyluv it’s a different kind of feeling with a colonoscopy. I’ve had major surgeries before, and the colonoscopy wake up was entirely different. Though, experience may vary.

They say the prep is the worst part, but it's not really that bad. Be sure to follow the doctors directions, and is your still worried, I like to eat soft foods (soups, oatmeal, etc) the day before I do the prep. It makes things easier. Just be sure to drink prep of water/clear fluids with the prep and it'll go by in a flash!

How bad it is depends on the person. Pooping my guts out was a walk in the park. Personally I have no tolerance for bitter flavors. I can't stand beer, coffee, or even some chocolate. So trying to drink a gallon of bitter prep was like drinking poison. For hours. And you can't just chug it down, your body will reject it and vomit. So I'd drink half a cup, and then drink anything else to get the horrible flavor out of my mouth. That isn't how it is everywhere though. Some places you take tablets with any clear beverage you want. I was just unlucky that my local hospital still uses the old fashioned "drink an entire gallon of poison" method.

@@FacebookAuntwas it the golytely? It’s crazy how much taste buds differ! For me it was salty not bitter. They included this lemon flavoring packet which I did NOT use. I put it in a cup with a silicone straw and got it as far back as I could and drank the 8oz every 15m and then chased it with chicken broth. It sucked but was manageable. My biggest concern was shitting myself on the way there 😅😂😂😂

@@leebenz5622 I think it was Colyte or Peglyte. Supposedly "berry" flavour. Since it is a mix of laxitive and electrolytes I was expecting salty, like store-brand gatorade or something. The bitterness was a surprise, it's not something mentioned in many "reviews" of the stuff. Taste buds are weird.

NO! Oatmeal is NOT what you should be eating the day of your colonoscopy❕️ Just the opposite. Clear broth. Jello (no red or purple). Juice without pulp. And even just water to quell the hunger pangs. Was this a prank to recommend oatmeal ??? Geesh.

The prep reminds me of the time that I watched the Space Shuttle take off. Same thing. Don't THINK of walking away from the bathroom. You have an unbelievable amount of material in your digestive system, maybe 20 or 30 pounds. Lay in a supply of toilet paper and towels because you're going to want to shower after each episode. You'll feel like skipping on the way to the hospital because you'll feel so light, and the medicine "to help you relax " will give you complete amnesia. You won't even remember why you told your work why you wouldn't be going to work that day.

Just had my first one a few months ago, I'm 57. The dread leading up to the procedure was totally cancelled out afterward. I kept feeling like I was going to feel 'violated' or something but when I woke up it was like nothing had happened. Now the sore 'behind' from the prep was another story but next time I shouldn't have any of the dread.

The hardest part was getting the prep down 🤮 it tasted so bad! I will definitely be asking for an alternative option to the gas can of faux-berry-flavoured misery that I could barely choke down next time I have to get a scope done

Sounds miserable. Ask your doctor about Docalax and Miralax. Makes a huge difference.

I had one about ten years ago and the prep wasn't pleasant, but I was back to normal in a few days. However, last year, I went through the prep again. It didn't run liquid by the time I went to the ER and the doctor refused to do the colonoscopy. He hadn't bothered with the pre-procedure face to face, either. I went home and 20 minutes later, all hell let loose. I called the doctor's office and they said I was now not scheduled. By the way, the doctor wouldn't talk to me at any point, and I now refuse to see him again. But the hell of it is that it took ONE ENTIRE MONTH before my bowels performed normally. This was nothing like my first procedure. Now, I am very leery of going through this again. Not because of the prep or the colonoscopy, but because of the after effects.

I awoke in a cold sweat to spy Doc Schmidt sharpening and pulling out unique tools I had never seen before in the corner of the room. None of my surroundings were familiar, so I tried to ask him where we were and what he was doing, but he just kept saying the same things: "We're prepping," and "I'm searching for clues."

Thank you for this, Dr.Schmidt! I'm going in for my very first colonoscopy in nine days and have been really nervous about it! This video helped me know exactly what to expect, and feel so much better about the entire process! ❤️ Out of curiosity, if polyps are found and removed, will there be any pain afterwards from their removal once I wake up?

No, polyp removal itself should not cause any pain because you do not have typical nerve endings in the lining of your colon

You’ll be shocked at how easy it is except for the bathroom part. Don’t plan on leaving your house the entire day before the procedure. I’ve had several polyps removed. Felt nothing. Good luck.

I've had to go through worse. I'll deal with this, too! I feel so much better about it thanks to you and Dr.Schmidt. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me know what to expect, and further put my mind at ease about it all, especially polyp removal. You're an absolute sweetheart for doing so! The prep is not fun. I've done it, though not for a colonoscopy (that's a couple years away). Did it for a dual surgery of a hysterectomy and removal of a GIST. (GIST was in the small intestine.) The recovery of that surgery though was painful.

I have never had any anesthesia for my coloscopies. Dulcolax, Miramax, scoping, flatus and home. I also have a general surgeon ( not a medical G. I. doctor) scope me. If he (or she) breaks it, he can fix it.

I was put under for my first one, but had nothing for the second. The second one was much better for me. Also, they used nitrogen for the second one, I think. It's completely absorbed, so no massive farting afterwards.

There is no way I’d be awake for that. You must have a high pain threshold. I read a testimony from someone who had no Anesthesia and they were screaming. No thank you.

There was one point in the transverse colon that was almost painful, but the doctor pulled back and paused and gave encouragement before going ahead more slowly. If someone was screaming during the procedure, why the hell did they continue with no anesthesia?

Not a doctor, but an elite member of the kidney stone club. It’s not uncommon to have flank pain for a while - depending on the size and shape of the stone.

My son had a colonoscopy that I think went up in to the large intestine. The reason I say that is because they found something close to the appendix. They said they couldn't remove it and scheduled surgery to have his appendix removed. Does this make sense? Austin, TX

All colonoscopies go into the large intestine, aka colon. It is not uncommon for findings to require additional subsequent investigation or procedures. Without seeing the scans or any info of course it's impossible to speculate on what was found or why it had to be removed.

Make it cold, put some flavoring in it (just not red or orange), use a straw. Put on a good movie and sip it. If you feel sick, take a break. Ask your doctor if you can use Ducolax and Muralax with Gatorade. Worked for me.

Do they do colonoscopies under light sedation? I have a horrific fear of being put under, the other parts of the process don't really bother me but being out does.

Some doctors are even willing to do them with no sedation but yes light sedation is often an option too

I asked for no sedation last time, and it really wasn't bad. Might be difficult if you're uncomfortable with things going into your rectum, though. Recovery was much easier.

I have allergies and have had mine done without anesthesia at all, any option (lots, light, none) is possible just have to find a doctor who does that version.

You don't need to go under full anaesthetic. It can be with mild sedation where you are awake or even without sedation.

I had one years ago under light sedation. I woke up in the middle and was taking to the doctor. For me, the prep was the worst. The doctor had me take laxatives and do enemas. I was so sore! And even though there was nothing in my bowels left, the urge to go was strong on the way to the procedure. I had to stop at a restaurant to use their bathroom. I was also so tired from being up all night, I was nauseous. I should schedule one now, but I’m afraid to.

I need a colonoscopy because of an abnormal CT finding but I am just not going to make it to the procedure. There is no way with my delicate palate I can drink a gallon of foul tasting fluid and keep it down. So no prep, no colonoscopy I guess unless they have managed to find another way to give you diarrhea for 10 hours and leaving you stuck on the toilet all night. I don't even know if I can do that part because I am disabled and even sitting on the toilet for more than 15 minutes is painful.

So you’re just going to die then? There are many different colonoscopy preps. My last one was better. I drank a very large Gatorade, took some Miralax and Dulcolax. It wasn’t bad. However, I was on the toilet a lot. You’re not on the toilet for 15 minutes because it takes two minutes to evacuate. Then you go again a bit later for another two minutes. If it’s painful to sit on the toilet, perhaps a riser for your toilet will help. Just do it and get it over with so you’re not worrying about it.

As someone who got ulcerative colitis at 15 (~25 years ago), I've had my fair share of colonoscopies. In my country they ask you if you want what I assume is a sedative, but I always did it "sober" and apart from a bit of cramping like you might experience if you get very gassy, it was never particularly unpleasant, even so. I'll never have to do another one though, seeing how I had my entire colon and rectum removed in 2023 and now have an ileostomy instead. 😅
