not sure if she says this later in the video, but if you can’t find fabric paint, or just have a lot of acrylics (i know i do :P), get a bottle of GAC 900. it’s a paint medium that gives acrylics the same qualities as fabric paints. I’ve never had an issue with paint stiffness or washing off in the washing machine when i use it. 10/10 would recommend!
@zigentala
@zigentala 3 года назад
Hey! I've never used medium before, and I can see how it would be better if you already have an established acrylic paint collection. I think someone has mentioned here that GAC 900 is one of the better ones to use!

Thank you for this video :) I would also highly suggest prewashing any items you wish to paint. Demin is made of cotton which often shrinks a little in the wash, if you paint on your jacket and then wash it, that shrinking can pull the fabric fibers away from the paint and weaken the paints adhesion to the fabric. Prewashing also improve the paints adhesion by removing any dirt or oils that might be on the jacket's surface. We want the paint to stick to the fabric not to the grime that might be on top of the fabric. I also know you can buy fabric medium to mix into regular acrylic paints. This give acrylic that flexibility of fabric paints once dry. However, one down side is that they can thin your paints down so that sometime you have to do more layers than you would if you just used fabric paints, but it's a good option if you already have a lot of acrylic paint and don't wanna spend a ton of money to buy a bunch of fabric paints. I recommend Golden GAC 900 or Liquitex Professional Fabric Medium.

My GOODNESS you have some talent. I'm a traditional illustrator/freelancer. I just do pen on paper most of the time as my real talent is line work. I want to make my own jacket but I am not sure what specific paint style I should buy as some paints puff and some soak in etc. I'm mostly looking for the iconic cartoon/graphic image line work effect. I'm really trying to find the best way to do detailed line work on a jacket. I was just wondering if you had a video or advice you could point me to.
@zigentala
@zigentala 3 года назад
Hey ! Thank you so much for the kind words ! I have done some pretty detailed work with the setacolor paints i've used, they are exactly like acrylic, just suited to a fabric surface, so no puff or thin consistencies... but my moto has always been to just experiment with paints before trying your main artwork.

Hi, thankyou for your helpful tips. I just painted my first piece, a denim jacket. I bought Pebeo setacolor, the one that you mention. It made the jacket a little stiff, more than I would have liked. I don't know what I did wrong, I didn't put a lot of layers. Applying the first layer with white made it stiff already. I needed for lighter colors over it. It's funny because when I painted black hair and a cat, black didn't turn the those parts stiff. All my paints al the same, pebeo. The only thing that I have heard that I did different was washing and adding fabric softener on washer when I washed it. I heard someone suggested not to add fabric softener when washing the clothes prior to painting on them. What can you suggest me? It is still flexible but stiff 🙄😒 Thank you, I look forward to learn more from your techniques 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@zigentala
@zigentala 3 года назад
I think I understand your problem, as there can be some opacity issues and inconsistencies with paint texture. I have a particular paint, orange, that is super thick and is so hard when it dries that it cracks, while other colours like black or raspberry is silky smooth. I’ve never washed with softener so that might be another factor, but I don’t have any knowledge to help you there ! I’ve never had a problem with black, so yeah it might just be an opacity issue. I live in Australia so setacolor gets imported and I’ve had some paints that have come that are very blobby and I’ve just put it down to the paints being old as they may have been in storage at warehouses for longer.
@aliciacervantes2441

Golden Acrylics make a 'Fabric Medium' It's one of their GAC range - *GAC900* possibly? Anyhoo, you can add it to their acrylic paint to make it suitable for painting on fabric. If you already have their high-flow acrylic, it's already very runny (yet still highly pigmented) which helps a little. Just popping this here in case anyone has a load of acrylic paint already, and doesn't want to invest in a whole new set of paints... 🤍 The swatch tip is a great idea, thanks so much! 🤍
