Erbauer 1500 254mm Planer Thicknesser - Faults and quick run through.
So this is my quick review of our new Erbauer planer thicknesser. We decided to go with a cheap unit as we would only be using it for thin timber and thought that anything expensive would have been a waste of money at the current time, well that's what we thought.
We were using it for approximately 10 minutes on thin pallet wood and pine before the main drive belt broke.
List of faults....
1 - Fence was bowed along the length
2 - Fence was cupped
3 - Aluminium pulley has casting fault
4 - Drive shaft for planer blades is bent and has run out
5 - Chain for roller drive is dragging on planer blades driveshaft
6 - Push blocks are not flat
7 - The drive belt snapped.
Good Points...
1 - All metal construction
2 - Price is very cheap (£220) from screwfix
It's worth noting that I did email Screwfix and gave them 48 hours to reply, but they didn't bother coming back to me.
A Lot of these planers look the same, please let me know if you have a different make but the insides are the same, especially with the nylon gear. I would be very interested! I won't be telling you if you should buy one, but, watch the video and see if you think its worth buying and comment below to let me know what you think!

I worked in one of screwfix's shops for around 3 years and the amount of Erbauer tools we had brought back was unbelievable and because of my experience of a shop worker I'd never buy Erbauer but give screwfix their due they exchanged them without any quibble. Hope you got your sorted.

Hi Jerry, yeah its a weird one right? I guess that they know that they will have a certain amount of returns and so don't really care. Maybe don't bother with QA checking? I don't know, seems odd the experiences that people have that its not a bigger issue.

Haha I think I did, still not convinced they are quality BUT its good to hear that you have had a good one! I've had mixed comments from people to be honest, some have had a great unit, others have had the same issues as myself. I wonder those of us who have had bad ones have had the "Friday afternoon" units lol, there has definitely been an issue with quality control at some point. Fingers crossed its all sorted and people are picking up a bargain like you did! Thanks for the comment and info, good to know 👍🏼

Hell other, I've just finished watching a video by a chap called Peter Millard. He was quite honest about things. He hadn't had it for long, and had only done the equivalent of one day's work. It had me more or less convinced. I'm a semi-retired cabinet maker and furniture restorer living in France. I was used to proper cast iron two ton jobs- 700mm width. You could plane a centimetre at a time if you wished (of course no-one would do the). Heavy, sturdy, precise, and powerful. I've been doing a hell of a lot of research on these kind of machines. Quite honestly, they all seem to look identical. So really it certainly isn't worth wasting money on this kind of equipment. You'd have to go into the 4 figure range (1,000 +) to even begin to get anything proper. The industrial machines go into the thousands. Quite honestly, I reckon it's just pot luck. I've read a lot of comments, and the majority of people are fairly lucky. You weren't, and I'm sorry for you. this kind of experience can put anyone off. Thanks for sharing your experience, and good luck worth SF. Greetings from France. Cheers. Ralph

Hey Ralph and thanks for the comment! Yeah it's a bit of a weird one but I don't think I am alone. I checked on the reviews and there are lots of people with the same issue but like you said, it's a bit of potluck I think! The thing is the returns policy, they have a pretty much zero quibble policy so if you had the time and the inclination you could keep returning them until you picked up a good one, I've spoken to a few people online who have done just this so I guess its an option. Thanks again for the comment, hope the weather is beautiful in France today! P.S. Dont sweat the spelling lol, these things happen!

@@TheNaturalWorkshop Hello again, Thanks for your reply. The spelling mistakes were the phone's fault. I read your comments, and was rather amazed by the idea of returning a single item several times before finally getting the good model. It's like a game of hit and miss, carried out by a bunch of half mad drunkards! My generation were used to quality goods, British or European (German, Italian, Swiss, and French) made, solid quality machines and tools. We HATE waste and poor quality. All of my chisels are quite old (40 to 50 yrs) with some 19th century. All of them were re-hardened by a friend who's a master at this. My German Ulmia chisels are second to the Japanese in hardness. The stuff on the market is basically crap. Don't even TOUCH "Stanley"!! It's AWFUL rubbish- and expensive. The best are Vetitas and Lie Nielson- extremely costly, but beautiful tools. For reliable machines, if you're good at mrchanics, are the old cast iron ones- they go on forever. As to the T/P I've heard that Metabo are quite good (that's the beginning of the next category above. Probably in the 900£ range). I will confess. I have just decided on a Scheppach HMS1080 254mm model + chip collector- same brand. It's a 5+5 year guarantee- the best on the market. You see, the after sale service in France is a disaster. But, I have a good lawyer 😅. I really hope you get your problem sorted out. Enjoy chipping! Best greetings from France (the weather has turned after 10 days of gorgeous sunshine 😭). Cheers, Ralph

Thanks for the video. I hesitated after your video, but saw lots of positive reviews and bought this in Dec, it’s been perfect, I think you were unlucky... the fence will move if I push hard on the end but over the cutter, where it matters most it’s solid, push blocks don’t need to be flat just grip the work piece which mine do. Or maybe I just got lucky 👍 cheers.
@TheNaturalWorkshop
@TheNaturalWorkshop 4 года назад
Hi Richard, Sorry for the late reply, things have been a little mad with the business as you can imagine with everything that is going on. Glad to hear you got a good one. I think you were the lucky one! The issue with the fence moving when you apply pressure is that inevitably you will be applying lateral force against the fence. You should be able to get around this though by adding a MDF fence which fits over the current one. Be careful with those blocks, all push blocks need to be flat so that you get the full force onto the base and through onto the timber but these can be easily made so again, its not too much of an issue. Good luck with it though and be safe!

Great review. Essentially, if you're buying this, you're the QC - good to have that in mind. On the other hand, some of the issues identified perhaps go past QC into quality of manufacturing: I'm not sure e.g. the play in the bearings can be rectified by simple adjustment alone, perhaps manufacturing tolerances could also be the cause.

I bought a Kity 10" planer/thicknesser a decade or so ago and paid about £600 for it. It was out by about 1/16" across an 8" board when thicknessing. It was "made" in France and the UK distributor never got it working to my satisfaction. Kity went out of business soon after. I don't believe that a half way decent machine of the Erbauer 1500's capacity can be built for that price and wouldn't risk buying one.
@TheNaturalWorkshop
@TheNaturalWorkshop 4 года назад
Hi Len, thanks for the comment. ,Its a shame as Kity have some great tools out there but all is not equal across the board. I wonder if they have been around for so long that they end up with someone who manages to fix it. I kind of agree with you but you would be surprised the economies of scale with machines like these. Alot of machines have the same case, fence, rollers, electronics, motors etc which enables the factory to make it a ridiculously low price. The machine price usually increases when they change the internals. Metal gears instead of nylon, better shielding on the electronics etc. That being said, its my experience that I always find a lemon when I pay low prices. A Lot of other people have had better experiences than me but I can only comment on mine. I always try to buy quality for the workshop, but sometimes you need whats around and others you can wait for good quality stuff to arrive. I have found that even when paying a good amount for a machine, it always needs fettling and is never good to go out of the box.
@lenroddis5933
@lenroddis5933 4 года назад
With you on economies of scale; short production runs with long set-up times can kill the bottom line.There's a risk even with high priced "gold standard" kit. I've had my 1/4" Elu router for 39 years which is still going strong with just one bearing change. Similarly the 1/2" version. But the Elu band saw turned out to be a pile of poo; the blade tensioning mechanism has been replaced 3 times. Time isn't an issue for me, so I bought a good quality hand plane and a pair of winding sticks to convert my slabs of highly figured maple and bubinga into tables. Very hard work - but the sound, the feel and the smell of working with hand tools can't be beaten (and no snipe from a planer!). Mind you, the Lie-Nielsen #7 jointer cost twice as much as the Erbauer! I suppose these days if you have to buy new, the #1 criterion is the reputation of the retailer and their willingness to play the replacement game.
@TheNaturalWorkshop
@TheNaturalWorkshop 4 года назад
@@lenroddis5933 There is something beautiful to be said about working with wood and hand tools. I love it! That is completely true 're the retailer. That is my number one request when asked others about different brands after reliability. My tools help me to feed my kids, if they don't work then it causes me no end of upset with clients. We had a router die last year, took them 3 weeks to get it back to us, 3 weeks! We use axminster alot for tools and they are great. Awesome aftersales and their technical team are often on the money when things go wrong. They can usually identify the fault and send you the spare part if you are happy to fix it. Well worth the extra money in my opinion!

Looking for replacement blades and came across your video, I have had this model for about five years and given it a lot of work to do. It has behaved impeccably. I had to buy a new set of blades two years ago, but other than than that it has made mountains of shavings from pine, beech, oak and black walnut. Additionally based on my experience I have bought five other Erbauer power tools and I am over the moon with the quality and price. I think that your experience is unfortunate, however I do not think that this is typical of Erbauer tools. BTW I am in no way associated with either Erbauer or Screwfix.

@MichaelSmith-nk4yq
@MichaelSmith-nk4yq 4 года назад
Rocketman the table shouldn’t be pointing down. There is a red knob at the right hand end of the table and that is used for raising and lowering the top table. One way you can check if the table is level is by placing a long spirit level or straight object across both tables, they shouldn’t be be perfectly level or they won’t plane. The left side should be slightly higher than the right. You will see a depth measure just on the right side of the blade guard. When using the planer only take off a small amount at a time, between 0.5-1.0mm, this avoids strain on the machine. Happy to talk you through this if your on Twitter I can give you number we can speak on, but I won’t put a phone number on this platform. If I can be of any further help, shout me back 👍🏾👍🏾

I'm a professional joiner and everything I own is pretty much best-in-class after 30 years worth of graft and upgrading. I totally get the fact that low-cost, Chinese-made kit is aimed principally at the DIY guy who just wants to knock up a shelf every six months. But the massive problem I do have with all of this stuff is that there are no spare parts available for virtually every brand, be it Erbauer/Titan/McAllister/Whoever, plus all of the tools sold by Aldi, Lidl etc. So when they break (as they surely will) they don't get fixed - they go straight to scrap or landfill. Tens of thousands of power tools every year, from all over the world - can you imagine size of the pile?. By way of comparison, I own a fair bit of Hilti kit which is now approaching 15 years old, and all of which works just as well as the day I bought it. On the (very rare) occasions that these machines do fail - Hilti still carry the parts and they fix it. From an environmental perspective, there's simply no comparison. Just sayin' .........
@TheNaturalWorkshop
@TheNaturalWorkshop 4 года назад
I think you have hit the nail on the head there to be honest Kevin. One of the biggest issues is that with the build quality that seems to be coming over, the lack of spare parts pretty much means that the machine is for the skip when something goes wrong, which is terrible. We always try to fix anything that breaks before it gets thrown away but sometimes it's just not possible. The need for reliable tools with spares is one of the reasons why we love Axminster tools. Whenever we have had any sort of issue, we call the service department, explain the problem, they identify it and advise us which part we need. This is then sent out to us and we fit it, job done. I have never had a tool fail that couldn't be fixed and back up and running within a couple of days. They don't always have the best tools on the market, and the prices are usually a bit higher than the competition, however the aftersales service is excellent! Regarding Hilti tools, we manufactured some large MDF blanks for Cambridge Uni last summer, the chippy who fitted them only used Hilti tools. I had a play with them and man, those things are super nice. Not flashy or in your face, they just work and work every time. If they made more woodworking tools I would have a pot on the shelf for Hilti money that's for sure! Thanks for the comment and apologies it took a few days to get back to you!

🤣 yes but to be fair, isnt everything made out that way? I really dont know how they allowed it to leave the factory. One thing I have noticed is that Screwfix seem to use the cheaper tools as like loss leaders and the profit margins on them must be huge because there is a very high return rate. Im guessing they have a business model which works on a limited amount of use and people either not bothering with the returns or the warranty periods running out. The reviews on the website speak wonders. It is interesting though as Ive spoken to people on FB who love theirs and use it all the time 🤷‍♂️

From what ive seen they tend to be alot better built but you need to make sure as it will be second hand. I understand what your saying but when we buy something it should be good to go, that's the rule. Sending them back until you get a good one is fine I guess if you aren't shirt on time or have a deadline to meet but that's not usually the case. It's also difficult when you live miles from the local screwfix and a return via courier can take days yo get sorted. We brought a faulty Triton thicknesser online for local store pickup. - Drove to the store and it hasn't arrived. - They cancelled the order and arranged one for home delivery - This unit was then damaged so we asked if we could pick up a new one at the store and were told no, they had to have the old one back and the only way they could send one to the store was if we brought another unit. - Brought ANOTHER unit online and then took the old one back for a refund. This took days, if you have a limited time in the workshop this just isn't acceptable and until people tell them it isn't they will just continue to do it and it's wrong. Ask people if they would be happy to spend another £20 to guarantee that the product will work out of the box and most would say yes.
