Reviewing the Titan Planer Thicknesser TTB579PLN after over 2 Years of use.
This is a budget tool from Screwfix that is based in the UK. You can pick it up for £159.99 and it offers a fairly good value for money. This machine can be used for both jointing and reducing the stock to the correct thickness. Its small foot print makes it perfect for smaller workshops. I’ve had mine for 5 months now and I’ve battered it stupid, and it’s still going strong. Recently used it to convert loads of old wood from the garden (pergolas etc) into decent stock to use for table tops. If you plan your job well then changing from one role to another is a doddle. Use the jointer to set the face side and edge on all of your timber pieces and then the thicknesser when your squaring the them all up. I also use a shop vac and cyclone for dust and it collects just fine from both ends of the Titan, and when you’re using the thicknesser you deffo need something to collect as the thing throws stuff out like a snow canon! Good review though, thank you.

Thanks Tomasz. I bought one of these a year ago and have only used it once with some success on short pieces of wood - but even those were difficult to get an even thickness with. I agree with your conclusions.

Good fair review on a entry level wood machine. Even some of the big industrial planer thicknessers are a pain in the neck to change over. Well explained. I like your elevating storage trolley it's brilliant. Tony

I've got this machine and I agree 100% about the hassle of changing over from planer to thicknesser. It is great to have both machines in one, but I hate using mine just because of that issue.

Great honest review, wish I watched this video before purchasing mine today but like you say I'll only be using it for some DIY projects. I have heard that someone bypassed the safety device on the dust extraction port on the thicknesser so it didn't take so long to change from one to the other.

it annoys me that there are so many of these things including bandsaws and bench saws that come with fences that aren't fit for purpose. It has to do what it says it can do doesn't it? It's ridiculous that you have to start thinking about making your own. How difficult is it to get it right in the first place? Just make and supply it with a fence that f*^king works!!!

I had one of these and agree with your review. It worked but changing modes was a bit of a hassle. I gave mine to a friend when I moved from the UK. Not yet set up a new workshop but hopefully can do so in 2022.

Great honest review. My Clarke version of this is somewhere in a plastic bag in the garden at the mo.... Cost me about £250.... I spent £500 on a Dewalt DW733 thicknesser (Brilliant machine) and made your sled for planing, also i can use my router table for planing as well

Great review Tomasz. I have 10” Erbauer and it is 90% same build. For my use it does the job but it’s loud (!!!). I have to say I was lucky with main. Fence is fairly straight and bed doesn’t wobble.

I love mine, and it takes me all of two minutes to change from planer to thicknesser - you just have to have the right tools at hand (well, a hex key). Might make a new fence for it, and I use a builder's straight edge to set the blade height when changing blades, as I don't rate their tool. For the money - a great buy. Entry level, yes, but it does me wonderfully well.

Think you must have got a bad example. I got mine 18 months ago, and have very little trouble. It's noisy, but nowhere near as bad as yours. It takes me maybe 10 minutes AT THE MOST to change from jointer to thicknesser, and the jointer fence is fine. The width can be a problem sometimes, but I was aware of that when I bought it. As I rarely need to joint/plane long boards, I have no problem with the length of the bed. For the price it's a good tool, and I'm happy with it.

Thank you for a very honest review and imo Screwfix’s Titan brand of tools are absolutely rubbish, so far i have had to return an SDS hammer drill and a petrol hedge cutter/pruner both within a month of purchasing.

Hi, I also live in the UK and have a Titan Planer Thicknesser, I agree with all your comments, I don’t have any near neighbour but if I had then they would probably complain about the noise. I too got over the constant changing of the dust shoot by buying two machines and leaving them up as planer and thicknesser. I would have preferred to get a cast iron machine but the next up machine in cast iron is ridicules price and one that I refuse to pay.

Luckily I got mine given to me. I would not have paid for this machine. It was practically new when I got it, but was damaged in a few areas. The feed table wobbles, the table holding screw was also stripped. I tapped and threaded a larger bolt and have a system now where i use a 10mm spanner to tighten 2 nuts onto each other to hold steady. Does the job. 90⁰ table is warped everywhere. Loudest machine ever. Top planer is difficult to plane anything longer than 750mm in length and 100mm high. I can see using this thing for a repetitive, simple task like shaving something down that us already smallish and relatively square, but trying to take rough stock and turning it into perfect symmetrical lengths is almost impossible. I have spent a good few hours trying, but in the end am finishing the job with my cordless dewalt hand planer. Like I said. For free it was decent. I wouldn't pay for something that almost does a job right.

Looks to be very similar to the Ferrex Thickness/Planer from ALDI @ £160 and the one I have is a piece of shite! Might be just a bad one, but after trying to make some warped/twisted CLS straight on one of the widest sides, it's just making it worse. It's actually badly cupping the timber along it's length and that's without putting much downward pressure on the timber either. Any advice?

Never oiled mine. I do clean up my Metabo thicknesser and table saw but the rest of tools I just dust them off.

Brilliant review dude. I've had the same model for over a year and only just used it for the first time last night. The problem is it snipes my boards at the end of the pass. The outfeed table is fixed so I cant figure out how to solve this problem. Do you know how to fix this on this model? Thanks loads.

Every thicknesser will have this problem to some degree snipe is just a thing that happens with all the thicknessers to my understanding

I just throw away the dust extractor and block microswitches so you can turn it on wihout dust extractor. It produces great amout of chips, but you can use it in both configurations instantly

I think the main failing with this and the many clones of this machine is the fence. Not just the flimsy material it is made of but the inability to move it across the blades. Anyone who has used a surface planer as they are usually called in the trade will say you need to be able to move the fence across the bed to maximise the blades when edging. I know its only about 8 inches across but you do not want to keep jointing with the same area of the blades, they will soon become dull in that area preventing good edge jointing of your boards. I think a good video would involve a modification to the fence to allow it to move across the blades, others have tried to do this but usually out of wood which would not be as good as perhaps making it out of metal. Food for thought?.

Just bought one to run 18mm oak floor boards through and the thicknesser keeps turning as it's going through.. Is there a way to lock in off or am I doing something wrong

This tool has got the thicknesser in it and the jointer on top. Both of them use the same "roll" with blades. The dust extraction port needs to be placed in different places depending on which you are using - thicknesser ( dust port on top of the table ) or jointer ( dust port inside of the thicknesser chamber). Hope this helps.

I didn't explain it correctly lol.. I mean the adjuster on the thicknesser keeps turning as the boards are going through.. Therefore leaving uneven thickness

If you look on the under side there is a chain tensioner ( on my sip ) which you can adjust, don't over tighten it as it makes the depth adjuster a bit hard to turn.

When I put a pallet board sideways through the planer it comes out not straight. What am I doing wrong? It's fine when I put it through flat

Use the jointer first. Get a flat one face and one side then you can use the thicknesser part to get the other two side flat and parallel

can you advise please just got one of these and set up just for the jointer part i have the bed set at 0 still but seem to get snipe at the last bit is this normal or am i doing something wrong

Is it set up as jointer or thicknesser? If you getting snipe as a thicknesser then unfortunately it's very common. If however on the jointer then it may suggest you are trying to remove too much material at each pass and you are putting too much pressure on the piece as you feed the board out

Done a review on my channel for this. I agree with you its not the best out there but for £120 which i paid it works well enough. The fence is crap but for occasional use it works ok. Aslong as you take into account its for d.i.y use not trade then its all good. It wouldnt be worth me spending loads of money as i wouldnt use it alot but £120 is fair enough. Good review

These machines are exactly the the same same but dfferent names brands it took me half an hour to work the the jointer woudnt work unless i wound the planner up with a peice of wood to press against a switch lever which is now by passed

The outfeed table is fixed so you should not have the need to adjust it. The indeed table has a knob at the front of it that will take it higher or lower.

Don't know why it's taking you "20 - 25 minutes" to swap the extractor, it can be swapped out in less than 5 minutes without tools, the hex bolt and screws can be left finger tight while swapping between jobs. I agree with the noise though, but what can you do!

I bought one and sold it 2 weeks later. The noise and the frustration with it was overwhelming. Could never get it working correctly. Great video terrible machine

20 minutes to switch from thicknesser to jointer? Seriously? Takes me less than 5 minutes. I don't use it that often, it's not a particularly good machine in any way.

i dont understand why a company hire engineers to put all the effort into designing a machine that has a wobbly fence. the 2nd most important section failure. why?????

Exactly, not an engineer myself but it should be a reasonable ask to have everything working as it should.
