So glad you said this! And I don't believe it's cold-hearted one bit. Not telling anyone else what to think or do, but it's called SELF defense for a reason. You have a right to self-defense... NOT a right to be a hero.

It's absolutely everyone's responsibility to protect themselves. We need to all remember this and stop apologizing for other people's possible discomfort. Just as I carry for bear protection, I also carry for protection from two-leggeds (humans). Never apologize for prioritizing your personal safety and well-being!

@@everythingisaworkinprogres5729 incorrect. The legal right of self-defense applies to protecting strangers. You do have the CHOICE not to intervene. Yes, we should make the judgment carefully if the situation is not obvious (active shooter).

Obviously it's your choice, and that's not a terrible starting place. I can't imagine sitting idly by while, say, a child is being knifed or beaten with a club. Gotta be a middle-ground somewhere.

Your active shooter instructor makes a good point. Anytime you’re able to visualize a situation you may be in ahead of time and how you will handle that situation can probably benefit you. You see Olympic athletes do it all the time right before they start they’re event.

This is so horrible to hear. You put yourself in lethal danger when you let the police approach you with a gun or other deadly weapon in your hand. This was drilled into my head at every firearms training class I've ever taken.

Incidents than LEO constantly face, makes it Real Hard for them to make good judgment calls.

I’m not an NRA advocate however, their stop the bleed class should be on everyone’s radar. It was an excellent class.

Just so you know, when police get any sort of description from dispatch, if the dispatcher even does their job at all, the cops file that information away in their brains as "description of the perp", they don't have room for anything else in their brains. The information they need to be given is the description of the bad guy. And if you don't want the cops to murder you, you need to be physically gone from the scene of the crime by the time they arrive. They shoot everybody in these things. Anyone that moves. Bad guys, good guys, random unarmed bystanders, victims of the bad guy who are already dead and lying motionless on the ground, and even their fellow cops. The forensics reports on these things will shock you. You need to deal with the immediate threat as quickly as you can, disengage and get away as soon as you hear the first siren, and then if you feel like making a report to the police, call up your lawyer, and go into the station together and let your lawyer do the talking.

What is that saying, “Survive to fight another day”?

Yeah, like the responsibility to ignore and fight tyranny (and by ignore, I mean disobey). Just sucks we've become a nation of cowards who would rather blame other people than take responsibility and fix our own shit and take control (and responsibility) for our own government. Yeah, WE are responsible for what our government does.

I would rather waste money shooting bullets, than not practicing while saving then become clueless during one of those situations where people freeze.

@@reecewatson5311 Cops never give anyone a chance to comply before they fire their weapons. You see it on body cams all the time. They shoot first, and then as they're continuing to shoot repeatedly they'll scream things like "stop, police!" Police stop active shooters some of the time, but very often it's ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers that deal with it before they arrive. When police do arrive, they will generally shoot good guys with guns, unarmed bystanders who may or may not have already been made victims of the active shooter, and even other cops. Cops have a really hard time with IFF, and they're all very eager to pull the trigger, so they don't take a moment to think first. Ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers know they will be in a lot of trouble if they make a mistake, so they hesitate to shoot, unless they are absolutely beyond any doubt pointing their weapon at a bad guy. They identify first, then point, then fire. Cops just fire, pointing somewhere in the direction of whatever scared them, and let the CSI guys identify after. There's many cases of ordinary peaceable concealed weapon carriers responding to the same act of violence, all without knowing who each other are, and all of them independently identifying who the bad guy was, and never shot any of the good guys. That sort of thing happens a lot, but generally doesn't make more than the local news. But of course if good guys with guns were killing each other at these things, it would be international news and everyone would know about it and talk about it decades after every time gun grabbers want to pass a new law. And cops accidentally shooting the wrong people at these things is always buried deep. But if you dig into the medical examiner reports, you can find out just where all the cop bullets went, and they go all over the place. Into random bystanders, into other cops, into victims already lying dead from the active shooter, whatever they happened to be pointing their gun at when they unloaded the magazine in a blind panic. It's really quite shameful.

YOUR weapon is to defend YOU. You are NOT there to defend others (non-family). IF it turns out to be an undercover LEO, AND they threaten you with their gun, ALL BETS ARE OFF!

There is a good likelihood that because of the stress of the situation you may not really even hear your shots being fired. It’s referred to as auditory exclusion and could very likely happen along with other involuntary actions such as tunnel vision

As part of training you should fire with no hearing at lease once so you at least know how it will affect you.

Excellent point! If someone has to fire their gun while inside their car, to prevent being carjacked or kidnapped for instance, then the discharge is even louder, and would definitely deafen them at least temporarily, if not permanently. That's another reason to make sure your gun is put away safely before first responders arrive, they will be shouting instructions that you can't hear!

The same goes for experiencing a night muzzle flash. I was trained never rack a gun. It gives up your location & delays response time.

We have a home drill in a 2 adult household. July 2021 we had a home invasion. What we didn’t know was we had accidentally trapped the individual inside our house. We had been landscaping & had multiple doors unlocked. He left 10 minutes after we went lights out later that night. I can’t even begin to share the terror we felt.

Agreed! I try to carry pepper spay so that I don't have to use deadly force to solve every problem. while Its not always a viable option, there are many times it is.

@@whyguygin Anytime you’re forced to lay hands on somebody there’s always a chance you will become injured yourself so I found pepper spray to be a good option

@@ridnthawave708 I agree completely. I have had my CCW almost 2 yrs but just recently began trying to carry almost every day. Unless someone has serious psychological problems, carrying should change one's frame of mind for the better. It calms me, actually, and makes me more polite and accepting of a$$holes such as road rage instigators, crude individuals, etc. However, the world is getting crazier by the hour... I suggest carrying whenever possible. Just don't use it if ever in doubt!

Dont be afraid to carry. You bought it for a reason. Watch a lot of videos “mistakes gun owners make”... some may resonate, some not so much. Take Sav’s online course, or better yet, take a local “defensive shooting” course. Some places also have a “ladies special” course. Get familiar with your state’s carrying versus transporting laws. Some may require the gun in a locked box or something if you dont have certain permit. If you get pulled over, turn off the car, put the keys on the dash & grip the wheel at 10 & 2 or make your hands otherwise visible. If the cop asks whether you have any weapons, obviously say “I have a valid permit & XYZ firearm”... or something like “I’m transporting XYZ gun to the range for practice”... DO NOT just reach for anything. Wait till its agreed upon that “I’ll be reaching for my license, permit, etc now” The most well-known “carry insurance” is USCCA. I agree my uncle a WW2 veteran and avid gun collector experienced a squib. The barrel was shredded & he ended up injured. This is a guy who got hit by a sniper on D Day and survived.

True but but also realize 80% of the people who die in this country from accidents ( all accidents not just automobile accidents) do so because they bleed to death. So whether you’re in a gunfight or not having proper “stop the bleed” equipment on you it’s not a bad idea

i ride a motorcycle. the trauma bag stays in the saddle bag. i am not going to walk around a bike rally with a medical kit strapped to my waist.

... within reach if needed above your head or beside you , maybe under a folded jacket or piece of clothing ,, along with a good flashlight if not equipped .... if concerned about others not knowing or uncomfortable with firearms ...( your choice to carry is your decision ,, not up to a vote from others )... if something were to cause enough alarm to wake you through the night ,, animal or human ,, you won't be of alert mindset to mess with ANY type of holster and certainly don't put it in your backpack and out of reach ........... Really No difference then a security weapon at your bedside or nightstand at home ... .. how about a Remora or Sticky Holster under your inflatable pillow ...... (Just Kidding ,, well maybe) ... just be careful if you are prone to have nightmares ....

mostly agree with the clearing thing but if you got kids in the house it changes things. A. you can't wait in a room they are not in. B. the person who opens your door could be them! (your kids) and of course you can't leave them behind as you run.

Going with the No kids in the house we were trained to hide & allow the perpetrator to come to you. Do not give up your location. FYI depending upon their ammunition you could potentially be shot through a wall.

It’s one reason why I tell people never to get involved in third-party encounters. There’s a great likelihood you won’t know the entire story as to why something is taking place

Agree with “dry fire” exercises!

That's true, but the problem is that if you've had to shoot your weapon to defend yourself, you'll be deafened by the shots & you'll also be stressed out. Because of this, you (the victim) may see the police shouting, but you won't hear/understand what they're saying, and you won't be able to think straight. That's why training is the only answer here, everyone who carries must train so that they do the right thing (reholster or put down their gun safely, put hands up) without having to think about it.

Caucasians May get the warning….people of color not so much.

The instances where police shoot without first shouting don't make instruction videos. The best advice is to have your weapon down before they arrive.

If kids ever come to your house ever…hiding a gun is an accident in the making. Kids are amazing at getting into that thing that no kids can get into. Gun stays on the headboard or my belt until grandkids show up. Then it’s in the safe. My 2 cents.
