Watch THIS Before You Go To An Aviation College 

Purdue Grad here. Was a student and then CFI for the University. You'll be flying in the first 2-3 days on campus your Freshman year even with no previous flight time for those who haven't flown before. Really loved the college and Flight Program. Had a great experience and really helped set me up for employment at the airlines immediately after graduation. Good luck!

I’m currently a student at embry riddle and the biggest thing for me was coming into freshman year with my ppl I was able to get started right away on my instrument training instead of having to be put on a waitlist for a flight block. Make your decision and try to start flying junior year of high school

Skip to 1:25 to get past filler. (Or just read my summary) -1st issue: Some schools don't let you fly immediately. -2nd issue: Some schools require a 2nd application to join the flight program which is separate from your academic application.

Riddle pilot here: 1) If you decided to go here, you will probably have to wait 2-3 months before you start flying. We have a good number of CFIs but the big thing is which campus you attend. If you go to Daytona, expect to wait a lot longer. If you come to Prescott, the wait is not as long. 2) Getting accepted into the flight program isn't a difficult task at all, it's really just filling out paperwork. 3) Many freshmen come here thinking it will be a laid-back training environment, it's not. It can be difficult if you don't put in the time and effort needed to succeed. You must be assertive to keep moving forward or you will "wash out". The cost of attendance here is also no joke. Financially, the only reason as to why you would attend this college is just to get the degree while you're training. 4) On that note, many airlines are starting to hire pilots without degrees so if you don't feel like spending more money, don't come to a collegiate aviation program for Part 141 training. Just get your certs normally through Part 61. The only con to doing this is essentially not having R-ATP Mins down to 1000 hours. You will have to work 500+ more hours. So either save money but work longer, or try to fast track to the airlines as soon as possible. I cannot stress enough how important it is to financially understand what you can accomplish, it's blunt to say but it's the sad truth. Although this may change, I'm sensing more airlines will start setting up private training centers which will fund a pilot to train then directly fly for the airline. Like many foreign airlines usually do. Godspeed everyone, hope to see you in the skies.

My guy just put something on my mind because I was thinking about going back to college for flight training because I already have a BA degree but I'm looking to become a pilot.

I will be going to Auburn University next year for Aviation to start with my Instrument Training. Here is a list of the colleges I looked at during my search and ordered in category. Large School: 1.Auburn 2.Oklahoma University 3. Western Michigan University 4.Purdue 5. Oklahoma State University (Secondary application for flight program) 6.Ohio State University (Bad program lack of instructors) 7. Arizona State University (Satellite Campus for Aviation) Small Schools (tend to be expensive) : 1. Florida Institute of Technology 2. Embry Riddle There are many I did not mention but those are my top. Keep in mind all programs are relatively expensive but the most cost effective for me was Oklahoma University. I hope this helps those looking.

Look into Eastern Kentucky University Aviation. Fantastic program!

I want to be a pilot but also mostly wants to go to a university. Many people says that going to university to become a pilot is not worth it. Instead going to military or flight school is better option. Some strongly suggests Air Force including my dad. I don't have problem with that but sometimes i wish to have you know having those uni life experiences, graduation gown...... Ahh why am i so confusing :)

So you don’t want a four year degree? Then go to a part 141 school and skip college.

Can anyone help me I want to really just go to flight school and can’t afford it even if I finance to join an airline but being Native American my tribe will pay for aviation school to get a degree but won’t pay for flight schools if it’s just a certification only if it has a degree with it

Thanks for this. I really needed this. I`ve decided to do CPL and aviation degree together. I`m 16. I`ve chosen to start flying now do SPL AND PPL then CPL and aviation degree together(in 18). What`s ur opinion in this? And kindly also tell me if I`ll start flying now will it be hard to manage both aviation study and my secondary(11 and 12 grade) studies?

Purdue Global university (Purdue university online) is the least expensive. You fly at your local airport and earn an aviation degree online…the best option.

Part 141 Student here at BAKERSFIELD. Be sure to kiss some peoples ass because it is the way for you to succeed as quick as possible. Also, this will give you a %100 job in the school. I have been in my school for almost 4 years now and I have been waiting for my CFI initial for 8 months and it is no fun since you get to forget things! You will not be that proficient and you will suffer at the end because you will have to pay more to get back to it. The school offers a 3 year degree with your certificates and rating, but again, it depends if you kiss ass. Flight training is supposed to be fun and the school should support you along the way, but here, it does not feel that way. They only want your money and your praise. GOODLUCK on finding a good part 141 school. If I had a chance to go back in time, I would go Part 61. It may be a longer journey, but it is way relaxing and fun.

Embry Riddle Student GET YOUR PPL BEFORE COMING! I had made an incredible mistake thinking I could easily build my time from PPL to CFI while attending ERAU, and this has even been pushed by faculty. It is a lie. And do not believe that it will be easier for you just because you can apply for student loans to pay for your flight training. I was unable to fly until my sophomore year and then COVID had hit setting me back even further. I was unable to start flying until my second year of the fall which had my class courses and pilot experience completely misaligned with each other making it difficult to learn properly. I was taking Instrument and commercial ground courses while still trying to pursue my private license, which was set at such a high pace due to me being set so far behind with flight block rescheduling. By the time I became a Junior I had to switch my degree from Aeronautical Science to Aeronautics with about $20K in the hole with no licenses and hope to be able to resume flight training at a local flight school when I graduate this fall. PROCEED THIS UNIVERSITY WITH CAUTION. If you come from a Lower-Middle class family it will be difficult trying to (1.) Learn how to fly (2.) Work and pay your rent (3.) Pass your classes within 4 years, all at the same time. If you do not fall into this category then you will be just fine. When you do graduate and start working as a CFI for the University you are paid $15 an hour, and you become stressed with the workload of countless students and difficult scheduling (I asked questions about my flight instructor's opinions). So please just go to a Part 61 flight school and then find work as an AG pilot, Instructor, or tow banners. The only thing I will be getting out of this is a piece of paper with ERAU stamped on it and $90K in debt. Granted, I am thankful for the university for supplying us with connections with regional and commercial carriers at their career fairs.
